This week’s /Filmcast takes a ride on the wild side with the director of Brick and the recently released The Brothers Bloom, Rian Johnson, who gives a brief warning at the top of the show for the show’s… explicit content. Without detailing this content too much, it can simply be said that Rian brings the slashfic to /Film.
Rian dominates the What’ve You Been Watching segment with an interesting discussion about A Serious Man, the recent Coen brothers film. Most of the guys agree that the film is drawn a lot closer to Barton Fink than the Coens’ more recent Burn After Reading, especially in terms of how it earns it’s darker tone rather than grabs for it without the proper buildup.
In the news, the guys talk about how the upcoming Joss Whedon horror flick The Cabin in the Woods has been delayed for “3D conversion”. Dave and Devindra press the fact that The Final Destination was a big earner due to its gimmicky 3D implementation, while far more substantive Drag Me To Hell suffered low box office numbers without it. As a director, Rian has a lot of interesting insight to offer on the situation, especially concerning the “realism” that 3D tries to bring to the screen.
Covered films and topics: Glee pilot, A Serious Man, After School, Last Year at Marienbad, Rudo y Cursi, Gigantic, Flash Forward, Couples Retreat, Ivan Reitman Is On Board for Ghostbusters 3, Cabin in the Woods Delayed for 3D Conversion, Danny Boyle Directing Aaron Ralston story?, Duncan Jones Mute Faces Financing Difficulties, Sequels for Zombieland and Showgirls, Adrien Brody Grabs Lead Role In Predators, Trick ‘r Treat
In this week’s /Filmcast, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar and Adam Quigley discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of 3D conversion, compare A Serious Man to Barton Fink, and confirm or deny whether or not Couples Retreat is in fact a trainwreck. Special guest writer/director Rian Johnson joins us for this episode. Rian’s latest film, The Brothers Bloom, is currently available for rental in iTunes, Blockbuster, Netflix, and plenty of other places right now.
