Idle Thumbs 46: First Annual Year

by Jonathan Downin in GamesOctober 7th, 2009 @ 3:48 pm

Idle ThumbsChris finally got around to firing up Red Faction and he is loving it. The guys are talking about the game here in a context that hasn’t been touched on too much in the games press. They point out how ridiculous the story is, yet the game doesn’t acknowledge it. This is the norm for games and the discussion here points out that we are almost always put in a position of controlling some sort of psychopath in games, yet we have been so conditioned to this that we rarely notice anymore.

The developers of Dead Space and the forthcoming Dante’s Inferno, Visceral Games’s next game will be based on Jack the Ripper. Destructoid has unearthed some yet unconfirmed details that the player will be a supernatural character who fights demons. This seems very much in the vein of what Visceral is doing with Dante’s Inferno and the guys are not feeling it.

Chris brings up The Tales of Monkey Island games and it creates a rather awkward situation since Jake is involved with the series at TellTale Games. The guys spend some time talking about narratives in games and hit the Mass Effect 2 “Subject 0″ situation again. If you missed it, Chris was also on this week’s Gamers with Jobs discussing his issue with Bioware going extreme.

Oh, and happy 1 year anniversary guys! Video games!

Covered games and topics: Red Faction: Guerrilla, The Ripper, Tales of Monkey Island, Metal Gear Solid series, Mass Effect 2, emails

The Idle Thumbs podcast turns one year old on Saturday, and to celebrate we bring you a regular episode. This week we wipe a curmudgeonly tear from our classic PC gaming eye, and find yet again that making fun of something we thought could never exist only seems to bring it to life. Plus: “Video game stories are serious business,” says madly hopping, car-flipping, building-smashing man.
