Rebel FM Episode 34 – 10/01/09

by Jonathan Downin in GamesOctober 2nd, 2009 @ 6:18 pm

Rebel FMCrime Craft starts this one out and it’s not pretty. Left 4 Dead Crash Course gets a middling response, with the opinion being that this was more of bone to throw to those complaining about the lack of support for L4D than anything else. The Beatles: Rock Band has Tyler excited, but Anthony and Arthur have barely touched it since its release.

Arthur really wants to talk about Uncharted 2, but Anthony calls for waiting until next week to get in-depth on the game so Tyler can play it and join in on the conversation. They do get into it a little though and it’s easy to glean that they are high on the game. Tyler talks about Borderlands with some good and bad remarks.

The topic this week is bias and the shift in games coverage with publishers and developers taking it upon themselves to put out podcasts and coverage of their own games. The EA Podcast with Jeff Green is pointed to as an example of this recent trend. The conversation is a somewhat disjointed, but there are some good insights here with the consensus being that things probably won’t change too much. “Getting into the industry” talk closes this one out with the group giving the standard line that networking and having good writing skills are the most important things when trying to get your foot in the door.

Covered games and topics: Crime Craft, Majesty 2, L4D Crash Course, The Beatles: Rock Band, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Uncharted 2, Borderlands, bias in the changing media, DLC, Super Street Fighter 4, Hammersuit, getting into the industry

Greetings! This week we get the ball rolling talking about Uncharted 2 (no spoilers of any kind, promise), Majesty 2, the new L4D DLC, the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 demo, and a lot more. Then we talk about the future of sponsored media outlets and how they fit in with gaming coverage (with your comments), and then we close out with letters. Squid balls.

At the end of the show, we mention one Rebel FM listener’s request for any help you can spare for relief efforts in the Philippines in the wake of Tropical Storm Ondoy (which you can read about here). You can donate here and here. Any little bit would help, if you can spare it.

  1. Any reason why you guys don’t cover Rebel FM’s Game Club episodes? It’s a nice retro look back. I’ve only just gotten into Rebel FM through their Half-Life 2 Game Club (still ongoing), and am considering looking into their general weekly podcast. But, no, the Game Club is good.

    • I would love to. The Game Club stuff coming from the Rebel FM guys is really great. Unfortunately, we can only cover so much with the current amount writers on CM and offering a wider breadth of coverage is more important. Those who are interested in Rebel FM are probably able to find Game Club themselves.

That said, as we grow, Game Club is something that would be great to have on the site.

This podcast is fun but every ep is a subtle diss to ps3, then the perfection of the 360 prasied by them even without context , oh well I really disagree w these guys but it is their preference

    • Jon Cole says:

Do you have a citation or timestamp for some of that “praise for the 360′s perfection”? I’d really be curious to see if I was just overlooking this partiality.

    • They certainly… don’t like the PlayStation 3 as much. Personally I’ve only listened to their Half-Life 2 Game Club episodes and, you know, in those two episodes they only mentioned it once even though Half-Life 2 and its progeny are out on the system. To be fair, that one mention was a very positive one, and all of them are probably playing it on the PC or XBOX360. They’re just not PlayStation 3 players as much as they are PC or XBOX360, and that’s fine.

  3. TJ Chacon says:

OK Jon Cole give me a timestamp for a 360 criticism and Ill give you the timestamp for the 360 perfection, what I mean is that no criticism for the 360 means they mean its perfect I guess since Ps3 gets dissed for every single detail, I mean they say they hate fanboys but act like them when the PS3 is the topic. Thats my 2 cents, Do u agree Jon Cole?

    • Jon Cole says:

TJ, you’re the one with the burden of proof. The counterargument that you’re trying to present rests on the fallacy of negative proof, which I don’t care to indulge.

My point in this is, Anthony, Arthur, and Tyler are all credible journalists. While Rebel FM is their conduit for more personal discussion about the games they may critique on other sites for their jobs, it doesn’t mean that conversation breaks down into potshots and console wars. They’re all reasonable people and I believe they’d give a fair shake to any delivery method for video games.

I’m willing to agree to disagree.

  4. TJ Chacon says:

Em the thing is that I remember them comparing consoles a couple podcasts ago with a letter asking them but I have no idea which one and they all picked the 360 which is fine it’s their opinion comparing it to the complete game console hence my perfection staterment, Im just saying this podcast is pretty biased whatever way you look at it even if the guys are credible journalists but it still seems as fanboyism as affected them too even though they say it’s stupid and that’s what I find weird about this podcast. I disagree in the potshots you mention and since you wont indulge me on the fallacy of negative proof I guess we disagree (I dont play videogames that much I do admit you know for doing other things like going outside, work and life in general but I do enjoy podcasts!)

Bye Jon Cole just do me a favor get FF 13 on PS3 so maybe they’ll put in JAP audio cause I doubt english is gonna be very good like that Advent children in english which is pretty bad hahaha

    TJ Out!

  5. They don’t like the PlayStation 3 as much as the XBOX360.
Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis don’t like the PlayStation 3 as much as the XBOX360.
Jeremy Parish doesn’t like consoles as much as the handheld options.
Shane Bettenhausen doesn’t like the XBOX360 as much as the PlayStation 3. (Console Taisen!)

As you can see, everyone’s opinion differs. Me? PlayStation 3 ~ Blu Ray = WIN! At the end of the day, I think we can all sit firm on the fact that Half-Life 2 is the best game ever made yet. And with that, in the words of Jeff Gerstmann, “Konnichiwa, bitches!”.

  6. TJ Chacon says:

I miss shane on podcasts!hopin to a sequel to orange box on ps3
