Engadget Podcast 169 – 10.31.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech830 days ago

The DROID is taking over. Glancing at the time break-down of the show, you may think that the main DROID talk takes in the first 20 minutes, but it actually runs through the first 40 minutes. There is a lot to say (see the review) about the new handset, and the guys generally agree that this is a huge release, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the introduction of the iPhone. The handset, Android 2.0 and Google turn-by-turn GPS come together to form the Voltron of the smartphone world. RIM’s Storm2 is now available, but many may...

Windows Weekly 128: The Upgrade Conundrum

by Jon Cole in Tech831 days ago

This is a big week for Windows Weekly with the launch of Windows 7, for obvious reasons.  At the top of the show, Paul and Leo talk at length about all of the issues on Microsoft’s end considering abrasive anti-piracy tactics implemented at the expense of consumers, including notorious false positives in the authentication process. Paul has been under plenty of scrutiny for the registry hack that he discovered that allows users to easily perform a clean install using upgrade-branded Windows 7 disks.  Nonetheless, it’s a very useful, relatively...

The Geekbox: Episode 37

by Jon Cole in Games, Misc, TV831 days ago

This week’s episode of The Geekbox comes in a little late and fortunately makes up for it with Brock, the stripper-guardian/podcast roadie extraordinaire.  Fitch reports in on his previous week of every-day-of-the-week dates, with plenty of the pseudo-modesty that you might come to expect from the “playa”. Tropico 3 gets discussed yet again, with Karen coming away from it dissatisfied with the fact that you have to actually build up an economy before you can torture innocent citizens.  Ryan Higgins has picked up Tales of Vesperia after a...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 140

by Jonathan Downin in Games831 days ago

DJ Hero is the first topic up this week– again. The group discusses the forthcoming DLC for the game and then Greg touches on Band Hero, which he is in the midst of reviewing. Hilary recently reviewed GTAIV: The Ballad of Gay Tony and gave it a 9.2. He deems this the better of the 2 episodes and obviously enjoyed it. Greg talks about the announcement of Netflix coming to PS3 and states that it will only require a Netflix software disc to be in the drive for a few months before it is integrated into the XMB. Modern Warfare 2 has been in the...

Filmspotting #279: An Education / Antichrist / Top 5 Taboo Relationships

by Jon Cole in Movies831 days ago

It’s a Filmspotting double feature this week with Lone Scherfig’s An Education and Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist.  First off is An Education, which both Adam and Matty really love.  Matty really admires all of the character dynamics, most importantly the relationship between Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard’s characters, the latter of which he can identify with personally in his youth.  The art direction, screenplay, and casting all receive plenty of praise. Antichrist doesn’t nearly get as many props as An Education, but both Adam...

Rebel FM Episode 38 – 10/28/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games831 days ago

Things start out with the indie game Captain Forever. Anthony and Tyler sound like they have had some fun with the game, but they feel like the $15 asking price is a little high. Anthony had a chance to see some of the single player portion of Bioshock 2 and he shares some spoiler-free impressions here. After some quick Torchlight experiences, the guys touch upon Civilization, Windows 7 and Modern Warfare 2.  Tyler also shares some Eufloria thoughts. Things take a sharp turn in the second half. The guys had a chance to visit Children’s Miracle...

gdgt weekly 061

by Jonathan Downin in Tech832 days ago

Any other week, the announcement of Netflix coming to PS3 would be big news, but it has been overshadowed by the inundation of activity in the mobile world. Palm has announced that the Pixi will be launching next month for $99. While this is a reasonable price, it is going to be a hard sell against the $99 iPhone 3G, and the guys say as much. Motorola’s DROID, available from Verizon on November 6th for $199, has made huge waves in the mobile world. With its high-res display, Android 2.0 OS and Google’s recently deployed turn-by-turn...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 113

by Jonathan Downin in Games832 days ago

The Xbox 360′s exclusivity of Netflix is officially over. The streaming video service is coming to the PS3, but you must have a proprietary Netflix disc in the drive to view the Netflix content. Although this seems highly counter-intuitive, they have announced that this is just a stop-gap solution until it can be done purely through software– strange. Socom for PSP has been delayed. Although Slant Six is saying that they need more time to better promote the game, the guys speculate that this is a move to avoid the release of Modern Warfare...

The Game Informer Show: Episode 5

by Jonathan Downin in Games832 days ago

Anyone who has been following Game Informer knows that they have been going through a transition. They have recently relaunched both the magazine and website. Along with a stronger online presence, they have also started a podcast, The Game Informer Show. Although this is only the 5th episode, it feels like they have settled on a structure that is somewhat unique. There is no classic “what you’ve been playing” segment, the show is instead partitioned into self-contained segment which have a tight, 1-game/topic focus. This allows...

Idle Thumbs 49: Bargo Busters

by Jonathan Downin in Games832 days ago

It’s a Torchlight extravaganza. After their special “podblast” interview with Runic Games’s Max Schaefer, the Diablo successor is again the center of attention. Chris is loving the game and it shows, with a full 30+ minutes spent discussing the game. It sounds like the Runic crew have put together a worthy update of the dungeon-crawler formula, and it is a steal at $20. An MMO version is in the works as well, so there is a lot to look forward to. Uncharted 2 receives some more discussion time. This leads into a focus on voice...

/Filmcast Ep. 73 – Antichrist

by Jon Cole in Movies833 days ago

Michael Dougherty, director of the recently reviewed Trick ‘r Treat,  joins the regular crew this week to talk about Lars Von Trier’s latest film, Antichrist.  Naturally, the What’ve You Been Watching segment is dominated by horror films in the looming shadow of Halloween, with yet another discussion about Paranormal Activity. The guys talk about Keychest, a cloud-based movie storage system that’s being developed by Disney.  The sentiment over DRM seems very similar to that of the video game community, especially with...

Drunken Gamers Radio 10-23-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games833 days ago

A drunker than usual DGR crew warns us that it is very late and they may not make much sense this episode as they have been up late finishing the ZomBOOsical. A email from Australia gives the guys more details about how much it sucks to live there as a gamer as everything is incredibly expensive. The reviews segment is packed this week with downloadable titles Rock Band for the iPhone and Trine for PSN starting things off. Hilden has been playing a lot of Borderlands for the 360 and says he loves the loot factor. The retro review for the week is...

CAGcast #176: Uprage!

by Derek Lavigne in Games833 days ago

After a one week hiatus due to Wombat having family health issues, he and CheapyD are back for another CAGcast. Cheapy  shares his experience with the Windows 7 Whopper, which he posted a video of on Youtube. Before getting into actual news, Wombat shares his experience raising money for Sarcastic Gamer’s Extra Life charity event. Cheapy has been playing a lot of Forza 3 since it was released in Asia the previous week and says he is really enjoying it, pointing out the rewind feature as a great addition. Wombat has been spending a lot of...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 159

by Jonathan Downin in Games833 days ago

Brutal Legend is the first game discussed this week with Lara Crigger joining the podcast and offering here rather negative opinion. Other seem content with passing over the “mediocre” gameplay since the story and characterization is so strong. Panzer General: Allied Assault has a couple of the guys excited, and Borderlands has converted a few more. Sean Sands and Shawn Andrich have been playing the game, but Shawn is saving the conversation until next week so Sean Sands can join in. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and Uncharted 2 are touches...

Giant Bombcast 10-27-2009

by Derek Lavigne in Games834 days ago

The Bombcast again starts off this week on bigger name recent release with Vinny discussing his experience with Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time. Talk of a recent press event that Vinny and Brad went to for Army of Two: The 40th Day then leads to a discussion on the merits of pre-order and pack-in bonuses, which all the guys seem to agree are largely a negative trend.  Afterwards, Jeff shares his excitement for DJ Hero, which seems to clear up his previous skepticism. News starts off once again with talk of the Modern Warfare 2 PC server controversy,...
