Scene Unseen – “Taking Woodstock”

by Jon Cole in Movies889 days ago

Chris and Jimmy light one up with their review of Taking Woodstock this week.  The fire doesn’t last long though, as Chris thinks Ang Lee simply doesn’t have a focused script and thus it’s difficult to take a clear message from the film.  Jimmy notes that the small marketing push touts Taking Woodstock as a light comedy, but Chris makes it clear that Ang Lee should stick to drama.  Both guys seem lukewarm on the film and ultimately end up recommending a rental. Jimmy leads the “peace, love, rock and roll” DVD picks segment with Martin...

MacBreak Weekly 156: Snow Job

by Jonathan Downin in Tech889 days ago

Okay Mac fanboys, buckle-up because Leo is crashing this thing.  He is not too happy about the recently released Snow Leopard and he is not shy about letting everyone know that it doesn’t feel like a significant upgrade and it should have been rolled out as service packs.  In fact, not only was it not a meaningful update to him, it broke many things in his daily work-flow.  Alex and Andy are in defense mode though, so not everyone is unhappy about Apple’s latest OS release. After getting the Snow Leopard discussion out of the way...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 151

by Jonathan Downin in Games889 days ago

World of Warcraft starts the conversation off this week.  Although the guys are not regular players of the game, the forthcoming expansion has them excited about the idea of starting a new character and leveling through the new character progression.  They site how much Blizzard has learned about making compelling quests over the past 5 years as a reason that the new character progression will be highly improved and worth checking out. Batman takes up a good chunk of time following the WoW talk with the group universally impressed by the game. ...

/Filmcast Ep. 65 – World’s Greatest Dad

by Jon Cole in Movies890 days ago

The /Filmcast crew is joined by the movie review bigshot Anne Thompson, whose best known for her previous position as film columnist and deputy editor at Variety.  The first segment was pretty thin, dominated mostly by nostalgic comparison of the charmingly campy Final Destination 2 to the horrible recent release The Final Destination 3D.  It seems that the older entry in this series had a little more substance and decently written horror scenes, whereas this latest sequel leans heavily on the 3D format with silly effects that jump out of the...

Command Prompt Episode 59

by Jonathan Downin in Games890 days ago

Right up front Steve Butts announces that Jason Ocampo and Staci Krause are no longer with IGN.  The quick manor in which he gleans over the statement makes it seem like somewhat of a sensitive issue.  There are no hints pointing towards this being a joke. This week is still very MMO heavy starting out with Champions Online.  This is the latest superhero MMO from the developer of City of Heroes and it has many excited by it’s extremely flexible character creation.  Marissa talks about IGN’s PAX plans and teases a FunCom reveal. ...

Giant Bombcast 09-01-2009

by Derek Lavigne in Games890 days ago

The crew is back together as Jeff returns from his week hiatus, which he explains almost took him to a random location on a plane, but ended up being a lot of relaxing at home.  A good portion of the first segment is taken up by Jeff elaborating on this notion, capped off by entertaining stories of each Giant Bomb member’s favorite griefing stories.  Discussions rounds out with Batman cape physics and fairground escapades. News of the world leads to talk of how Jeff does not think the recent Xbox 360 price drop really should even be counted...

Good Grief: 09/01/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games890 days ago

After being M.I.A. for months, Good Grief is back.  Tina Tweeted a request for input on the podcast a few weeks ago that implied that it may be going away, but then followed-up saying that it would stick around, but may be reworked a bit.  Well, it doesn’t seem like much has changed, but it is back. There is an involved discussion about the objectification of women in games at the beginning this week and Tina offers her take on the issue.  This leads into a discussion about the controversial “RapeLay” series from Japan. In recession...

The HotSpot 09/01/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games890 days ago

Starting out this weeks cast is a discussion about Kurt Cobain’s inclusions in Guitar Hero 5.  Music games have started to become formulaic, but you will be able to use your Xbox avatars in the new GH, which could be a cool novelty.  Batman also continues to get some talk time before moving onto other big comic news with Disney acquiring Marvel for $4 billion. God of War and God of War II are being remastered for release on PS3.  The new version will be in 720P HD and run at 60 frames per second.  You can get in on this beautified Kratos...

CO-OP | Episode 211 – 1994 Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games891 days ago

First up this week is Wolfenstein.  This has been a game that seems to have caught many by surprise.  There was very little hype leading up to its release, but it has turned out surprisingly solid.  Although it does look to take some of the better mechanics from other games, with its focus on shooting things pan out into an enjoyable, if not somewhat old-school, experience. Spider for the iPhone takes the second slot and it doesn’t have the guys as enamored as past iPhone games.  Everyone feels like the gameplay is a bit repetitive, but...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 128 – Gauge

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies891 days ago

Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock is the movie this week and none of the guys could get into it.  The pacing sounds to be on the slow side and Alex’s biggest problem was that there doesn’t seem to be any real conflict. For some reason Alex and Dan decided to pick up some laser tag guns and they head out to a park and give them a go.  It’s looks like a fun time, but it doesn’t look “$100 each” fun. Batman: Arkham Asylum‘s combat has the guys really excited.  While Alex has some minor complaints about the...
