TWiT 211: The Dummy Contract

by Jonathan Downin in Tech885 days ago

Google has been known to add some flair to their search page graphic from time to time, but the most recent one was weirdly geeky and pointed straight at game fans.  The graphic depicted one of the Os in their name being taken by a UFO with an accompanying twitter code that translated to “All your O are belong to us.”  This is a reference to the classic, poorly translated Japanese game Zero Wing, which is famous for the line “All your base are belong to us,” and Google did this on the 20th anniversary of the release of...

Idle Thumbs PAX 09: Ron Gilbert

by Jon Cole in Games885 days ago

Idle Thumbs brings the wizard to PAX in their interview with Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert, who is apparently a defender of shooting people that don’t think video games are art.  Ron talks about his upcoming game, Deathspank, which Chris notes is a sort of convergence of the Diablo-style, hack-and-slash genre and the graphic adventure genre.  Combining those two genres results in a lot of conflicting elements, but item collection bridges the gap and a fine tuning of the pacing between combat and exploration sequences makes Deathspank...

Giant Bombcast: PAX Edition

by Jon Cole in Games886 days ago

This live edition of the Giant Bombcast is packed to the brim with psuedo-celebrity.  Early in the show, Stephen Totilo brings some insight to the table concerning the bet between Vinny and Ryan about night-vision goggles in the new Splinter Cell game.  Everyone seems pretty impressed with Sony’s fall catalogue, with Ryan bringing special attention to Uncharted 2.  Jeff Gerstmann inevitably brings up 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, because “where my skull!” can’t help but slip its way into a conversation with all these guys. The...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 134

by Jonathan Downin in Games887 days ago

Erik has been playing Guitar Hero 5 and he is enjoying it.  Despite the recent decline in interesting in music games, Guitar Hero 5 has been getting a lot of good buzz.  It sounds like Neversoft have implemented a lot of new feature that make it easy to pick up and play while sprucing up the whole package. The IGN crew received a PR email from Capcom about Dead Rising 2 and what they will be seeing at the Tokyo Game Show.  It sounds like they are teasing a new mulitplayer mode.  Dead Rising was one of the premier launch window 360 titles and...

Filmspotting #272: Taking Woodstock / The Hidden Fortress / Top 5 Most Anticipated Movies

by Jon Cole in Movies887 days ago

Adam and Matty hop in their VW bus, drive down to the closest farm, and pass joint packed with film knowledge around a campfire for this week’s review of Taking Woodstock.  Both of the guys were interested in the idea of a Woodstock movie with no music, but they tend to end up in a similar spot of dissatisfaction with Ang Lee’s latest.  Matty does seem pretty positive about the lead actor, Demetri Martin, who he says plays the role of self-discovering, modest Elliot Tiber with a surprisingly degree of aptitude.  Both guys also agree...

Engadget Podcast 162 – 09.04.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech887 days ago

It’s a phone-heavy show this week, but the guys are starting out with Toshiba’s entry into the tablet market.  It’s almost like Toshiba is trying to cash-in on the Apple tablet rumors, but with a device based on Windows Mobile 6.0 they will have a hard time convincing anyone that it is worth their money.  In other Toshiba news, they are finally putting out a Blu-ray player in wake of their failed HD-DVD format. Sony is introducing the first entry in years to their VAIO X line with a notebook that is less than half an inch thick...

Creative Screenwriting – Extract Q&A

by Jon Cole in Movies887 days ago

Jeff brings writer/director Mike Judge to the table in a one-on-one interview this week, which inherently carriers a more subdued, quiet tone with respect to those with a live audience. The clear focus of the conversation is on what was (at least the first) peak of Judge’s career, the release of Office Space and the continued production of King of the Hill.  It’s interesting to hear how the idea of Office Space evolved from a film just about Milton to one about with vignettes of various cubicle workers.  Judge also talks about how...

Tekzilla | Episode 104

by Jonathan Downin in Tech888 days ago

Snow Leopard continues to leave mediocre impressions with Veronica not even venturing to install it due to the many reports of problems flying around.  Robert did install it and Patrick aptly points out that 4 minutes into explaining the new feature that he is talking about new wallpapers.  The bottom line is that there aren’t too many end-user features that will be apparent to most and it would probably be wise to wait a month or so until the bugs and incompatibilities are worked out. Veronica is talking about Spotify, which is an iTunes-like...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 105

by Jonathan Downin in Games888 days ago

There is not too much news in the world of Playstation with not many new releases and the calm after the PS3 announcement.  One thing that did come out this week is the PS3 3.0 firmware update, but it is not all good news.  The friends list has been updated for the worse and the guys are not happy about it. The PS3 has received interactive themes for the XMB with Little Big Planet, Afrika, Pixel Junk Monsters among the games represented.  They are $3 a piece, but add some character to the usually dull, but functional menu system. The announcement...

gdgt weekly 054

by Jonathan Downin in Tech888 days ago

The guys are moving through the news quick this week.  The big news up front it Apple’s iPod event announced for September 9th.  They just skim over a few predictions before talking about the Xbox 360′s recent price drop.  They feel like the new price is a decent deal, but Ryan thinks it would make sense for Microsoft to keep the Pro around for a $50 up-sell. With the release of the Zune HD, all other Zune models are slated to be discontinued.  Could this be a direction we see Apple going after their event next week as well? There...

The Geekbox: Episode 30

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc888 days ago

It’s a toned-down Geekbox this week with Karen out for her husbands birthday and Ryan Scott sick.  Everyone is predictably playing Batman and enjoying it.  Ryan talks about all the big PAX plans and he has included all the times and places for the proceeding in the post for this week’s episode. Disney’s acquisition of Marvel sparks a lot of conversation, but not too many insights.  There is some worry about what Disney will do with Marvel and the crew throws around the idea of Pixar doing animated Marvel movies.  Ryan Higgins...

Out of the Game, Ep. 12

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, TV889 days ago

It’s just Jeff, N’Gai and Shawn this week and it is a tight group.  The guys touch on PAX stuff before moving onto TV shows that they love and try to get others to give a chance.  The Wire is a universal mention and N’Gai talks about Oz and Deadwood with Jeff pushing Buffy The Vampire Slayer.  If you haven’t watched Deadwood, you really are depriving yourself.  N’Gai then tries to add 24 to the discussion as another good one, but Shawn is not buying it at all. The conversation then turns to World of Warcraft and...

at1UP: 09/02/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games889 days ago

It’s an issue packed show this week with PAX plans starting the discussion.  The crew has also put together another 1UP cover story on DeathSpank.  If you haven’t heard of the game, you are not alone.  There are chicken’s with teeth in the art though, so go check it out. The controversy of Kurt Cobain takes center stage with Shirk’s cocktail napkin rant this week.  While he seems to not being digging the fact that he is in the game, everyone else doesn’t really mind.  The main problem seems to be that his model...

Drunken Gamers Radio 8-31-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games889 days ago

Back for another week of debauchery, John, Moe, and Hilden are joined by friend of the show Phil Haymes. The Drunk Dials and mailbag lend their normal hilarity, though they are slightly shorter this week.  A foursome of reviews are brought in with iMech, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and the retro review, Robotron: 2084 for the Atari 7800.  Guest Phil Haymes educates the DGR crew on the fact that Dissidia is, in fact, a fighting game and not an RPG, and actually a good one.  Everyone seems to echo the gaming industry’s...

Idle Thumbs 41: Space Boss: The Lord of Space

by Jonathan Downin in Games889 days ago

The guys touch on their plans for PAX.  If you want to meet the Idle Thumbs guys you should show up at the bottom of the big escalator in the convention center at 5:15 pm on Saturday.  You don’t have to be attending PAX to get into the bottom level of the convention center so all are welcome.  Also, they will be giving away some free games.  More details are available on idlethumbs.net. Chris can’t get enough of Mass Effect and continues to go on about it here.  He is still playing through with his sniper which is working out better...
