Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 020

by Jonathan Downin in Games877 days ago

Greg Ford again takes the reins this week with Dan still out for unknown reasons.  Also, community member Lance Darnell is invited on and has a lot to add to the conversation, with Michael Donahoe carrying the more casual tourch which he firmly picked up last week. The ridiculousness of the Batman world record title is discussed before the guys go onto discuss the their most anticipated titles of the holiday season.  All the big titles get a mention, but the excitement level for Halo ODST is rather low, and this seems to be an industry-wide sort...

CastMedium Podcast 003 – 09.14.09

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech877 days ago

The Beatles: Rock Band is the first game up this week.  It has received almost universal praise from the podcast community and has us excited for a future where Linkin Park: Rock Band might exist. PAX has dominated the gaming podcast scene for the past week and we do our best to point out some of the better coverage out there.  This leads into a discussion about the GFW Radio panel and we share our love for that dearly missed podcast.  A few memories of the Dreamcast and Sega get thrown out in light of the 10th anniversary of its release and...

TWiT 212: Leave The Gun, Take The Calacanis

by Jonathan Downin in Tech877 days ago

Settle in for a lot of tech talk this week because this week’s episode clocks in at almost 2 hours.  Jason Calacanis is on this week starting out the discussion with the start-up competition TechCrunch50, which kicks-off later today.  The topic is talked about here, but the rumor is that we may hear something about the CrunchPad in mere hours. The Apple event is one of the main focuses here and everyone has an opinion.  No one can seem to get past the fact that a camera wasn’t put into the iPod Touch.  This leads into a discussion...

Player One Podcast | Episode 151 – Lucy in the Sky with Alien Nazi Batman Zombies

by Jonathan Downin in Games877 days ago

Even though the guys have been trying to get The Beatles: Rock Band talk banned from the show due to CJ’s inability to stop talking about it, the game commands a large chunk of time at the beginning of this one.  This is going to be a hard package to follow-up for both Activision and Harmonix. It’s the calm before the storm of fall game releases and the POP guys are taking the chance to go back and play some older games.  MadWorld gets some discussion before the group moves on to Uncharted.  While somewhat flawed, the consensus is...

gdgt weekly 055

by Jonathan Downin in Tech879 days ago

Apple’s iPod event on Tuesday turned out to be devoid of any big announcements.  The addition of a video camera to the iPod nano is welcome, but not Earth-shattering.  The storage bump and internal specs revision on the iPod touch are similarly uninspiring and they guys say as much here. As seems to be the case every week, there was a lot of cellphone news this week lead by Palm’s announcement of the Pixi and Motorola’s Cliq.  Ryan shares that after having some hands-on time with the Pixi, it feels distractingly sluggish in...

Listen UP: 09/11/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games879 days ago

Torchlight, a game from the team who brought us the ill-received Hellgate: London is the focus of the discussion at the beginning here.  Although Hellgate: London was not a huge successe for Flagship Studios and they were forced to disband, many of the main team members have gone on to pursue another game in the Diablo-style click and collect RPG genre.  In a surprisingly short time span they have delivered a $20, back-to-basics take on the genre.  Platforms are yet to be announced, but XBLA and PSN are targerts for the game’s release. John...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 135

by Jonathan Downin in Games880 days ago

The NPDs sales figures for this month are in, but they are glanced-over to some extent here.  The big surprise was the horrendously low sales of Madden 10 for Wii.  Even though this year’s game is one of the best in years, it sold just over half as many copies as last year’s edition.  The guys offer some commentary about why they think this happened.  Also, PS3 is way up and look for it to be significantly higher next month as well with the release of the slim model. The guys touch on the ridiculous situation involving Kurt Cobain’s...

Joystiq Podcast 108 – Red Link edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games880 days ago

Justin starts off the cast this week with a few impressions of Champions Online.  The guys also have some nice things to say about Section 8 and Chris points out the unique spawning system that has you dropping from space.  They do point out the almost assured sad fact that if you want to play this, you had better pick it up right upon release because Halo ODST and Modern Warfare 2 are going to steal all the players away from this game when they are released. The Beatles: Rock Band gets its requisite time, as does Batman before the recent controversy...

Filmspotting #273: Extract / Yojimbo / Top 5 Most Anticipated TIFF ’09 Movies

by Jon Cole in Movies880 days ago

Matty “Ballgame” Robinson kicks off the podcast with a list of things he loves… and strangely enough, they all seem to intersect in the subject of this week’s review, Extract.  Adam Kempenaar tries to explain why exactly Matty didn’t like the movie so much albeit this alignment of the stars, and he starts off with Jason Bateman’s character whose relationships aren’t really believable.  In fact, the guys say that a pretty sizable minority of the characters are cartoonish and don’t have too much payoff.  Mike Judge does a pretty...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 106

by Jonathan Downin in Games881 days ago

It’s a topic-light podcast with Chris ducking out half way through the episode.  Final Fantasy XIII news dominated the show since Ryan attended an event for the game in Japan.  The Japanese release date has been set for December 17th, but still no word on the States-side release.  He also got about 10 minutes to play the game and he shares a few impressions including some information about a lesbian summon– yeah, figure that one out. The guys also touch on whether they will be reviewing the PS3 God of War collect and the word is that...

Idle Thumbs 42: The Dreamcast

by Jonathan Downin in Games882 days ago

Get ready for a whole show dedicated to Sega’s opus, the Dreamcast– or so the Idle Thumb guys would have us think.  Nope, not here.  The title actually refers to the final segment that has the guys reading emails about game-related dreams sent in by listeners.  Those silly wizards. PAX game impressions start out the game talk with the indie hit of the show, Shank, garnering some praise for its art style.  Left 4 Dead 2 gets plenty of time as well with the updated Source engine getting a lot of attention, but the all-daytime setting...

MacBreak Weekly 157: The New iPods Are Here

by Jonathan Downin in Tech882 days ago

Apple’s annual iPod music event happened today and in light of that fact, Leo and crew postponed the regular Tuesday recording of Macbreak Weekly to today and recorded it as the announcements were being made.  This is an interesting take on event coverage and is much more interesting than reading live blogs.  Of course, catching the recorded version isn’t nearly as exciting, so make sure to try and catch it live next time at live.twit.tv. The special guest sitting in with Leo and Alex for the event is the author of the amazingly in-depth...

The Geekbox: Brodeo Reunion 2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc882 days ago

This week’s show is a special non-Geekbox episode.  Ryan’s old digs, GFW Radio (The Brodeo) came back for a 1 time live podcast at PAX.  If you are not familiar with the show, it was the PC podcast for 1UP and was one of most beloved and personality-filled podcasts around.  Listening to this will give you a good feel for what the show was like and the back catalog is still available if you want more. Although Anthony Gallegos of Rebel FM came on near the end of GFW Radio’s run, the main cast was Jeff Green of The EA Podcast,...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 152

by Jonathan Downin in Games883 days ago

Julian was reeled by the one fruit that rules them all this week so he is eager to get some games on his new iPhone.  Everyone has been playing some amount of Batman and Sean deems it to be 1 of his top 5 games of all time even though he is only 1/4 of the way in.  Julian has also been playing Champions Online and he offers his take that super heroes just aren’t suited for MMOs. The guys are pretty excited about The Beatles: Rock Band and this leads into a discussion about what kind of music and bands/artists they would like to see added...

Giant Bombcast 09-08-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games883 days ago

The first post-PAX Bombcast finds the Bombshelter in need of quarantine with Brad, Vinny, and Jeff all suffering the effects of the PAX Plague.  Ryan, however, feels fine and leads the group into reflections on the expo.  Jeff and Ryan agree that one of their favorite moments was getting a chance to sit down with Jerry and Mike from Penny Arcade for what became more of a discussion than an interview.  Ryan also explains how just getting to that meeting took Shadow Complex-like ingenuity.  The guys quickly run through how much fun they had at...
