Out of the Game, Ep. 13

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc873 days ago

The Beatles: Rock Band receives yet more talk at the beginning of this episode.  With the whole crew being huge music fans you can easily guess that it has gone over extremely well.  That is not to say that there isn’t a lot of thoughtful discussion going on here though with Shawn going into a pontification about how these types of games can/do affect brain development. Leading out from the the Beatles the group touches on the Kurt Cobain/Guitar Hero 5 situation and this evolves into a discussion about revisionist history in games and other ...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 107

by Jonathan Downin in Games874 days ago

It’s a special Podcast Beyond this week with Jeremy Duhnam leaving IGN for greener pastures.  While he doesn’t reveal where he will be going he does share the story of how he ended up at IGN almost a decade ago.  Greg also goes into detail about his journey to IGN that includes a story about his truck breaking down and being stranded in a rundown trailer with a random, nudie picture-loving old man for 8 hours. There isn’t too much actual game talk this week other than the usual weekly releases which are highlighted by Fallout...

Rebel FM Episode 32 – 09/17/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games874 days ago

Robert Ashley is on this week and that is always a good thing.  WET impressions and reviews have been disparate, but there is no doubt which side the Rebel FM guys fall on the issue– they don’t like it.  Darkest of days fares even worse here, but for the definitive view on the game, Giant Bomb’s quick look can’t be beat. Scribblenauts has not proven to be the game that the press had hyped it up to be, but Robert seems to be on the right track when he calls for an iPhone release of the game.  Anthony attended the recent...

gdgt weekly 056

by Jonathan Downin in Tech874 days ago

The Zune HD is sweeping the tech world.  Initial reviews have been quite positive with the gdgt guys praising it as well.  The user interface continues to be hailed as highly usable and fresh.  The OLED display handles blacks well and Ryan compliments the UI’s use of black as good design both aesthetically and in function to preserve battery life.  The guys are planning a full Zune HD round-table episode soon, so look out for that. The new iPod Touch comes under some more scrutiny here with some talk about the lack of a camera and the...

Drunken Gamers Radio 9-16-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games874 days ago

With Moe out for some undetermined reason, Hilden and John are running a two man show. Most of the week’s drunk dials relate to the feature presentation, so those are skipped in favor of just a few emails, including one asking the guys if they have a “cool down” game to end lengthy gaming sessions. The reviews this week kick off with Contra ReBirth for Wiiware, which both of the guys agree is a complete throwback to the 16-bit days in every respect. Next up is Raiden IV for the 360, which Hilden touts as much more intense than...

The Geekbox: Episode 31

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc874 days ago

Almost all of the regular crew is back this week with the exception of Mike Cruz and the addition of Olly Quinn.  Talk of last week’s PAX GFW reuinion panel starts of the cast with Karen sharing that it was hard for her not to get a little misty as Jeff remarked that he would love to go back into games journalism, but only with the Brodeo guys.  This leads into a discussion about how journalism is now the go-to way to gain entrance into game development as QA once was. The crew then goes on to discuss the state of media in general and why...

Listen UP: 09/16/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games875 days ago

The Listen UP panel that was recorded at PAX is finally here after word from Garnett that there were problems with the audio.  Things have not been completely smoothed out, but it is still listenable. After hitting 2 of the most talked about games at PAX, Brink and Shank, Shane points to the new Ratchet and Clank as one of his most anticipated games.  Assassins Creed 2 gets some love from Andrew as he points out that they have really taken the game design seriously this time around. The really interesting topics surprisingly start with the audience...

Command Prompt Episode 61

by Jonathan Downin in Games875 days ago

It’s a day late, but Command Prompt made it out this week.  The PC version of Resident Evil 5 is now available and it has Steve and Jeff talking about how Capcom seems to have started taking their PC ports more seriously.  Majesty 2 also gets some time before Steve gets deep into Champions Online.  He has been playing the game a lot recently and he praises the intricate character creator. Command Prompt tends to be fairly MMO-heavy and things are no different this week with Steve talking about a piece he wrote concerning the top 10 problems...

CAGcast #172: A Diabolical Unboxing

by Derek Lavigne in Games875 days ago

This week’s CAGcast kicks off with Cheapy recounting a bit of his trip to NYC that he had forgotten to mention last week including how thankful he was that he went for business class tickets. Cheapy also read a couple of emails that voiced their displeasure for them taking time out the previous week to talk about Howard Stern, to which Cheapy completely dismissed and called it one of the greatest experiences of his life. Both Cheapy and Wombat then discuss some new releases which include the two NHL titles, and go very quickly into NPDs for...

/Filmcast Ep. 67 – Shane Acker’s 9

by Jon Cole in Movies875 days ago

The “What We’ve Been Watching” segment kicks off with Devindra’s viewing of Swingers, which he says doesn’t really hold up over time.  It does bring to mind how the last decade has been so formative for both Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, but the film is ultimately unexciting at this point.  The guys also talk about Whiteout, the latest to hit the screens from Dominic Sena.  Adam thinks that the film is really horrible and that the trailer misleads the viewers into thinking there’s far more intrigue than the...

MacBreak Weekly 158: They Don’t Have That in the US

by Jonathan Downin in Tech875 days ago

Andy and Alex have both gotten their hands on the new camera-equipped iPod nano and the impressions are fairly positive.  While the image quality takes a serious hit when moving quickly, walking and in low-light situations, the video looks great in optimal conditions.  Overall, it seems to be a great addition to the device. The camera-less iPod Touch receives a lot of attention with the group again reiterating that a camera equipped version will probably show up in the next few months.  The technical differences between the 8Gb and higher-end...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 153

by Jonathan Downin in Games875 days ago

Get ready for some more Beatles talk because the Gamers with Jobs guys are eager to share their opinions on the game and they don’t hold back.  The tout the universal appeal of the game, but feel like it might be a little short.  They also aren’t too excited about having to purchase a lot of songs that they feel should have been in the package. MMOs get some time here with Shawn Andrich talking about the Aion open beta.  He shares that this feels like WoW more than any other MMO out there and he is enjoying it.  Instead of flying...

Giant Bombcast 09-15-09

by Derek Lavigne in Games876 days ago

With the PAX Plague finally in recession things begin to resemble as close to normal as they possibly can down in the Bombshelter. Jeff runs through the multitude of games that he has been playing over the past week, which include the first four missions of Halo 3: ODST (the rest are embargoed) and Need For Speed: Shift. Ryan says he isn’t sold on ODST and things that it seems boring whereas Jeff seems to have the same opinion of Shift as he makes the point that EA may have alienated both the arcade racing fans and fans of sim-racing. Before...

CO-OP – Episode 213: Dreamcast: Ten Swirling Years

by Jonathan Downin in Games877 days ago

The CO-OP guys deliver their love letter to the Dreamcast this week with there Dreamcast 10th anniversary episode.  It includes the crew sharing some of their favorite games and memories of the system, footage of the most notable/classic games and Dreamcast stories from PAX attendees. Sonic Adventure, Samba de Amigo, Soul Calibur, Virtua Tennis, Jet Grind Radio, House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 1 & 2, Skies of Arcadia and Seaman, they’re all represented here.  This is a great way to see what gaming was about 10 years ago. For some...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 130: Meat Flesh

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies877 days ago

The first movie this week is the 3D animated, post-apocalyptic 9.  Alex enjoyed it a lot citing the adult-oriented nature of the storytelling, but Dan and Jeff aren’t quite as high on it with Jeff having a few problems with the actual visual quality of the film.  A movie that the whole group can agree on is Whiteout, which no one liked. The second segment this week has the guys talking to a PAX audience about some of their favorite games of the show including 2 smaller titles, Shank and DeathSpank.  The Beatles: Rock Band fills the regular...
