/Filmcast Ep. 66 – Gamer

by Jon Cole in MoviesSeptember 8th, 2009 @ 11:03 pm

/FilmcastJordan Hoffman from UGO joins the regular team of the /Filmcast in their review of Gamer.  The “What We’ve Been Watching” segment runs a little short this week but does contain a short review of Mike Judge’s latest film, Extract.  The regulars don’t really like the film with respect to Judge’s Office Space, but Jordan thinks that the central plot holds up a little better than the latter film.  Both Devindra and Jordan speak positively about Fringe, praising the light, fun take on the pseudoscience that predicate each episode.

The news segment is dominated by the Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day Trailer, which was actually revealed earlier at Comic-Con.  All of the guys seem to subscribe to the same opinion on this: the original film was entertaining, a sequel isn’t really necessary, the fanboys are ridiculous and the media backlash is really undeserved.

At the beginning of the review of Gamer, Jordan brings up the secret, ridiculous dance that he had to participate in to see a press screening, which generally speaks to the lack of confidence of a studio in a new film.  Michael C. Hall (of Dexter fame) is apparently one of the saving graces of the film, playing a subtly humorous, menacing villian.  Otherwise, Devindra notes his disappointment in Gamer for being released after the recent refresh of Death Race, which film that’s incredibly similar in its foundation.  Dave arises as the devil’s advocate of the bunch, praising the somewhat original construction of the fight scenes and noting the potential for a meta-discussion of the nature of video gaming.  Ultimately, most of the guys agree that the film isn’t that great and it simply doesn’t achieve the social commentary it attempts.
