Adam and Matty hop in their VW bus, drive down to the closest farm, and pass joint packed with film knowledge around a campfire for this week’s review of Taking Woodstock. Both of the guys were interested in the idea of a Woodstock movie with no music, but they tend to end up in a similar spot of dissatisfaction with Ang Lee’s latest. Matty does seem pretty positive about the lead actor, Demetri Martin, who he says plays the role of self-discovering, modest Elliot Tiber with a surprisingly degree of aptitude. Both guys also agree that Ang Lee does a good job of setting up some of the secondary characters like Vilma, a transvestite played by Liev Schreiber, but fumbles a bit with the cliche, offensive character of Billy, a Vietnam vet played by Emile Hirsch. When push comes to shove, though, Adam says that he wouldn’t even go as far as to recommend a rental with this one because he hasn’t been so bored with a movie in quite a while.
Listener feedback takes the guys back to Inglourious Basterds for a short bit, where a couple of listeners force them on the defensive about their remarks about Daniel Mendelsohn’s “Inglourious Basterds” article in Newsweek. They also talk about their latest entry in the Kurosawa marathon, The Hidden Fortress. After being warned about Kurosawa’s “popcorn movie”, the guys ended up being pretty satisfied with this lighter film. They wrap up with their top 5 lists of most anticipated fall movies, which include some titles like 9, Capitalism: A Love Story, Nine, The Lovely Bones and of course, Where the Wild Things Are.
