/Filmcast Ep. 64 – Inglourious Basterds

by Jon Cole in MoviesAugust 26th, 2009 @ 8:23 am

/FilmcastNicholas Jasenovec, director of Paper Heart, adds some flavor to this week’s /Filmcast bringing a unique opinion of Ponyo to the “What Have We Watched” segment.  He takes note of the film’s interesting structure, making the film seem longer than it actually was because of the story being told from the perspective of a child.  Devindra and Adam both praise the second season of Mad Men, which implements great writing, strong drama, and consistency to make it succeed on an episodic level.  The conversation takes a turn for the news, dominated by the latest Avatar trailer.  Most of the guys seemed underwhelmed with the footage and thought that the motion capture wasn’t nearly as sharp and realistic as a film like District 9.

The review of Inglorious Basterds is almost entirely marked by praise, spearheaded by Nick’s commentary on the film’s originality.  Dave brings to everyone’s attention how the film surprisingly dramatic, with a high talk-to-action ratio.  Adam wonders whether or not the deceptive trailer that suggests a far more violent experience was crafted by the Weinstein Company or Tarantino, preferring the latter option with the idea to bring in an unsuspecting audience to a heady but dramatic sleeper.  Some of the guys come to blows about the morality and business viability of misleading marketing and Dave puts a cap on the spoiler-free review with his back-of-the-box worthy line: “It’s very much like sex… lot of tension, lot of building, and finally when the violence comes… it’s like orgasm.”
