With Chris still away on the last week of his European tour, Jimmy fills in his barely warm seat with a long time fan of the show, Matt. The two tackle District 9, with Jimmy’s guest host filling the “seen” slot with grace. Matt seems incredibly impressed with the film, especially accompanied by the knowledge of its relatively low budget and greenhorn lead actors. As usual, Jimmy takes a look at the movie’s marketing campaign, noting the viral push with posters everywhere portraying alien shooting ranged targets and the imposing alien ship hovering over Johannesburg. In the Letterboxing wrap-up, both guys are pretty eager to recommend this sleeper hit to practically anyone.
This week, the DVD picks highlight some of the different subdivisions in alien movies as Matt leads with his choice of John McTiernan’s Predator, giving special mention to Arnold Schwartzenegger’s classic performance. Jimmy follows up with a somewhat more traditional choice of the Alex Proyas’s cult-hit Dark City and Chris phones home with his horror science fiction pick of Ridley Scott’s Alien.
