Due to a single Chicago screening of Inglourious Basterds that Matty just couldn’t make it out to see, the Filmspotting crew shifts their magnifying glass over Hayao Mayazaki’s latest film, Ponyo. Adam notes that at several points, Ponyo clearly shows its true colors as a children’s movie by breaking any sense of logic– Miyazaki is generally willing to control his films by constructing a particular set of rules but this film just doesn’t get him to suspend his disbelief. Matty says that Miyazaki still offers a great experience to more mature viewers, though he didn’t enjoy Ponyo at all as a character. The guys both seemed satisfied with the voice acting, but are curious to see the movie in its original form with subtitles when it releases on DVD.
This week’s feedback segment is spearheaded with Matty giving a sincere message to viewers about how both of the guys stand on the point of their podcast and their respect for dissenting opinions. They must have really gotten a ton of harsh feedback in response to their review of District 9 that admittedly had its fair share of constructive criticism. Out of that is born some great commentary about the film, so this easily becomes one of their best listener feedback sessions in a long while.
