Filmspotting #270: Ponyo / Throne of Blood / Top 5 Films of 2000

by Jon Cole in Movies1001 days ago

Due to a single Chicago screening of Inglourious Basterds that Matty just couldn’t make it out to see, the Filmspotting crew shifts their magnifying glass over Hayao Mayazaki’s latest film, Ponyo.  Adam notes that at several points, Ponyo clearly shows its true colors as a children’s movie by breaking any sense of logic– Miyazaki is generally willing to control his films by constructing a particular set of rules but this film just doesn’t get him to suspend his disbelief.  Matty says that Miyazaki still offers a great...

GameTopius – A Conversation Between Gamers: Podcasts

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1001 days ago

Derek Lavigne, host of the Bitmob community podcast, Pixel Revolt, was kind enough to invite me to join in on a conversation about podcasts with Philip Kollar and Hilden of Drunken Gamers Radio.  This was done for GameTopius which is an up-and-coming, community-based gaming website. We discuss the podcasting landscape and where we see things heading.  Not much more needs to be said, give it a listen and let us know what you think over on GameTopius or here in the comments. Also, yes, we’ve heard the outcry– DGR will be added as a weekly-covered...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 132

by Jonathan Downin in Games1001 days ago

Batman has flown in under the radar and taken the #1 game of the summer spot.  The game has been almost universally praised.  It’s really refreshing to have a good superhero game since they are traditionally not so great.  Hopefully this one sells well so publishers realize that we need more titles like this. Every gaming podcast is covering Gamescom this week and Game Scoop is no different.  The response to the new PS3 is that the price drop is great, but the new machine looks noticeably cheaper.  On the Microsoft side, the Fable III...

Joystiq Podcast 106 – Crackpot or crockpot edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1001 days ago

Justin played through Batman Arkham Asylum this week and he absolutely loved it.  He says that it is not only the best Batman or superhero game of all time, but the best game of the year so far.  Looking at the scores from around the web, it looks like he is not alone.  Check out Griffin’s review. The guys are talking about the news of Gamescom and they point out the now common observation that the PSP Go will be only $50 less than the new PS3.  Since Fable II was 1 of the Joystiq guys favorite games of last year, they are excited about...

Listen UP: 08/21/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1001 days ago

Don’t let this week’s Listen UP fool you with it’s shorter length and only 2 man crew, there are a ton of games covered here.  Garnett and Sam are recording from Germany and they are hitting everything. First up is the PS3 slim news and the guys are understandably excited, but Garnett doesn’t feel like the new system is too handsome looking and the lack of backwards compatibility brings some disappointment.  Moving onto Microsoft, the Fable III and episodic Fable II announcements go over well, with Garnett positive that...

Engadget Podcast 160 – 08.21.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1001 days ago

Joshua, Nilay and Paul are starting out with the PS3 news from Gamescom.  It’s nice to get some impressions from the tech sector rather than the gaming collective conscience at times.  The reactions are generally positive with the crew feeling like this is exactly what will put those who were waiting over the top and ready to purchase.  There is an overall sentiment that the actual device is not exactly good looking and it has the guys lamenting the days when Sony was the pinnacle of hardware design. Sony’s new bite-size app and gaming...

Creative Screenwriting – District 9 Comic-Con Q&A

by Jon Cole in Movies1001 days ago

With Creative Screenwriting out of recent live Q&A sessions, District 9 as the most critically popular film on the big screens, and Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson both back on the the worldwide road promoting the film, Jeff decides to bring us a fan-submitted recording of the Comic-Con 2009 panel featuring the both creative minds as well as the star of the show, Sharlto Copley.  While the film used a lot of improvisation and thus lacked a rigid screenplay, Neill has a lot to say about the creative process and some of his motivations of the...

Rebel FM Episode 30 – 08/20/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1002 days ago

Starting out this week’s episode Tyler is talking about his ongoing love affair with Civilization 4 after getting into the Colonization expansion.  He has also been playing Champions Online which he is having trouble getting into and the guys discuss the many problems of WET. This week’s topic of the week centers around the announcement of the PS3 slim and the implications of the new $299 price point.  There are a lot of opinions flying around, but one unique point that is brought up is about the size of the slim and Sony’s decision...
