It’s a fairly tame Mobcast this week with Dan out of the office and Demian taking the reigns on this one. Jason Wilson and Matt Leone tend to be on the quite side so it’s nice to have Area5‘s Ryan O’Donnell sitting in to add some commentary.
After quickly admiring the Borderlands box art the conversation moves onto Little Big Planet and if has had staying power. The conclusion seems to be that it has drifted out of the spotlight due to its cumbersome DLC model on both the developer and user-created fronts. More substantial DLC packs, like Fallout 3′s offerings, are cited as a better way for developers to keep a game exciting and relevant.
The real discussion kicks off with Ryan’s topic of stripped-away game design and how this can go bad. He mentions last years Prince of Persia reboot as a game with boiled-down game mechanics that left you feeling like part of the game is missing. Optical media and increasing trend towards digital downloads is an inescapable topic and rounds out this week’s podcast with discussions on future consoles and buying preferences.
On this week’s Mobcast Demian Linn, Jason Wilson, Ryan O’Donnell, and Matt Leone discuss the Borderlands box art, whether or not anyone’s still playing LittleBigPlanet, good games gone bad, the future of optical media, and the girliest games they own.
