at1UP: 07/08/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games933 days ago

The at1UP crew has been out for a couple of weeks and everyone has a few tales to tell about the adventures. The is a new 1-page comic paper from DC out called Wednesday Comics and Mike sounds pretty excited about it.  It seems like a fresh approach.  Mike has a picture of him reading the first issue on the at1UP blog. Nelson Laut is in talking about his new video series on Game Videos called Clip Chat wherein he takes good comments from the boards and inserts them into a video about the topic.  They come out on Fridays so check them out and...

Diggnation | Episode 210 – Two Wizards, One Teenager and a Fox

by Jonathan Downin in Tech933 days ago

Extra!  Extra!  Read all about it.  JK Rowling is a woman!  At least it was news to Kevin.  Also, he says he could write a “wizard book.” The story about the girl diagnosing herself is either really cool or extremely depressing.  Either way, good for her. This episode was obviously taped a few weeks ago since the news is Facebook vanity URLs and the story of Megan Fox missing a kid trying to give her a rose.  Hopefully you got your Facebook address by now or what you want is probably gone. JK Rowling gets sued, Teen diagnoses...

Giant Bombcast 07-07-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games934 days ago

The first episode of Telltale Game’s Tales of Monkey Island is out and it is good.  Telltale is mad up of a lot of the original LucasArts people so this makes sense.  Go pick up the season pass on Steam for $34.99. Okay, get this, a company called Galloping Ghost is allegedly making a digitized fighting game in the style of Mortal Kombat.  The only difference is that this is 2009.  Just go check out the screenshots. It gets one more mention–  Asteroids, the movie. Covered topics and games: July 4th, Infamous, Trine, Call of Juarez,...

Out of the Game, Ep. 8

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc934 days ago

The guys are finally back with another episode, but in typical fashion, it is not the full crew.  We get Jeff, N’Gai and Shawn on this one so there is not too much to complain about.  It will be nice to have Luke back soon though. There is very little game talk here with the guys taking the first half to talk about recent current events.  There are more than a few opinions about Michael Jackson and his recent demise. Things do go into the gaming territory with some discussion about the general transition to the development side of things...

The HotSpot 07/07/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games934 days ago

Michael Pachter has been on a tear recently with his predictions, but these are not going over too well.  His prediction of a Wii HD coming by early 2011 has the guys skeptical.  A transition to HD this soon seems like quite a jump for Nintendo’s usual iterative designs. The news that LucasArts will start releasing some of their classic titles over Steam has generated a lot of excited.  The absence of Day of the Tentacle and others have a few disappointed, but those should come in time. And now the news everyone has been waiting for: Asteroids...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 120 – Amazoo

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies934 days ago

In movies this week we get Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Public Enemies and Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker.  The former didn’t fair too well with some common complaints from the guys about Michael Mann’s use of video, but latter delivers.  It sounds like if you can stand some Hollywood moments, The Hurt Locker can be an intense, entertaining ride. The Conduit just isn’t working here.  The controls are, unsurprisingly, the main barrier to the guys getting into the game.  Jeff also has a problem with the “N64 quality”...

CO-OP | Episode 203 – Gamer Cribs: Cesar Quintero

by Jonathan Downin in Games934 days ago

The guys are doing something a little different this week with CO-OP.  We get a glimpse into the guys’ houses in the first edition of Gamer Cribs with Cesar.  We dare you to watch this and not want have a place like his. Game #1 this week is Wii Sports Resort.  For what will certainly be a huge hit, this package hasn’t received too much exposure.  The guys are absolutely loving the games included and the precision of the Wii MotionPlus.  If you have a Wii, get this. Overlord 2 is #2 this week and the opinions are mixed.  Matt had...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 010

by Jonathan Downin in Games935 days ago

Another great Mobcast this week with John Davison sitting in the 5th chair serving up some more iPhone gaming picks.  His presence also spurs a lot of reminiscing about the old days of EGM and print media in general.  He throws out an idea that a high-quality, EDGE-style, publication in the vein of Robert Ashley’s A Life Well Wasted would do well at a premium price point.  That would be amazing. The other interesting discussion this week centers around game stories/ending and what is wrong with them.  A great point is made here that less...

TWiT 202: The Overeating iPhone

by Jonathan Downin in Tech935 days ago

With Leo out of the country in China, Dvorak gets hosting duties this week.  He does a great job at keeping the group lively.  Dvorak really is the only person on the level of Leo who can pull this off this well. The topics are a bit all-over on this one, but the CrunchPad gets some time right of the top.  This is a device that many would love to get their hands on and if the form-factor and engineering is up to snuff, it may just be a stealth hit. Bing is also catching some people off guard.  If you asked anyone in tech 6 months ago if Microsoft...

Player One Podcast | Episode 141 – Johnny Sega and the Turbo Touches

by Jonathan Downin in Games935 days ago

Okay, we are big fans of the Player One Podcast guys around these parts, but the revelation that Phil is playing, and enjoying, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires is baffling.  We kid.  It sounds like it’s a good time if you like the killing of 100s of guys at a time. Greg Ford has finally put some serious time into Infamous and he is enjoying it.  He has also been giving the highly under-rated Zelda 2 some time.  If you haven’t played it, get yourself a Wii and pick it up on WiiWare. The guys are doing a Game Club this week for the classic...

Listen UP: 07/03/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games937 days ago

Robert Ashley is on this week and even though he is a regular on a few podcasts at this point, he would be a strong permenant 4th chair addition to Listen UP. John shares a great story about a Sims 3 experience this week.  Although there is a strong stigma against the Sims franchize within the the gaming sphere, it really offers something that is unique and puts creativity into the player’s hands. The big topic this week is music in games.  The guys approach this topic from a lot of different angles and there are a lot of interesting points...

Tekzilla | Episode 95

by Jonathan Downin in Tech938 days ago

Up front Patrick and Veronica are discussing how to get the most out of your notebook in the realm of audio.  They cover amplifiers and break-out boxes that can make you notebook sound better than you have ever heard it sound.  Of course Patrick throws in his 2 cents with a little DIY soldering action as well. The real stand-out this week is the smartphone discussion with PC Magazine’s Sascha Segan.  He really knows his phones and he is on the show this week talking about the iPhone, Palm Pre, Blackberry and Android phones.  Along with...

Engadget Podcast 153 – 07.03.2009: Independence Day edition

by Jonathan Downin in Tech938 days ago

The Olympus E-P1 has a lot of people excited.  The somewhat retro styling packaging for a fairly full-features SLR style camera in a small form factor is pretty cool.  Joshua did a mini review of it, but there are some problems with it including lens focus problems. Wii MotionPlus has not really won over the Engadget crew.  They are self-admittedly somewhat over the Wii, but they are pretty excited about Project Natal. The rumors of Dell launching an Android powered mobile internet device has the guys excited to talk about where the MID market...

Rebel FM Episode 23 – 07/02/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games939 days ago

Some rather old games get some time up-front here.  The guys seem to have been on a multiplayer kick and have a few stories to tell about Halo 3 and GTA IV.  Anthony also had a humbling Civilization 4 game that took place over the span of a mere 30 minutes. The topic this week is games that you though were going to be bad, or just weren’t aware of, that turned out to be really good.  There are tons of games thrown out here, probably a lot that you feel the same about. Rebel FM goods are heading our way.  T-shirts are the first thing coming...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 97

by Jonathan Downin in Games939 days ago

The Podcast Beyond guys are talking a lot about the rumored PS3 Slim this week and the consensus is that this will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show.  Hopefully when Sony does announce it a price drop will accompany it.  More likely is a price drop for the current system to clear the inventory and the PS3 Slim launching at the current $399 price point. Sony has recently patented a system to emulate the PS2 Emotion Engine on the PS3′s Cell chip.  Although this doesn’t account for the GPU in the PS3 their is speculation that this...
