Major Nelson Radio – Show #326: Gaming in Germany, Gears of War and ‘Splosion Man

by Jonathan Downin in Games921 days ago

It is a interview-packed show this week kicking off with the “Larry Hryb of Germany,” Boris Schneider-Johne.  If you have ever been curious as to why games are censored in Germany or how their ratings system works, this is quite interesting. Cliff Bleszinski is on talking about some new content coming to Gears of War 2 and it sounds like we will be getting a lot of bang for our buck.  He is also talking about Shadow Complex which looks to be a great throwback side-scrolling shooter brought into the modern era. ‘Splosion Man,...

TWiT 204: Taste Like Dirt

by Jonathan Downin in Tech921 days ago

Leo has been off in China for the past 2 weeks, but he is back with a small and tight group this week.  Kevin Rose was on a completely unrelated China trip last week so be ready for some China talk between the two. Google’s Chrome OS is being faced with more criticism as time goes by.  Bill Gates is the latest to come out and discount the announcement as unexciting.  The prevailing opinion is that with nothing to show Google will probably deliver nothing more than a stripped down linux distribution level piece of software. The rumors of...

gdgt weekly 047

by Jonathan Downin in Tech924 days ago

Along with the Engadget guys, Peter and Ryan are discussing the release of the Palm Pre SDK.  Ryan throws out the idea that Palm should offer a standard app demo system for every app.  This makes a lot of sense and would differentiate the Pre app store from the iPhone app store in a meaningful way. Apple blocking the Pre from iTunes syncing is another big tech story of the week and the guys pontificate that Palm probably expected this and are playing this as a kind of “underdog card.” It’s a short episode this week ending with...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 127

by Jonathan Downin in Games924 days ago

The Bioshock 2 delay gets next to no response here.  The anticipation for this game is surprisingly low.  2K may be in for a surprise with the game not being the big hit they expect it to be.  If it is amazing this all really doesn’t matter though. The Knockin’ Boots segment this week is completely epic and surprisingly R-rated.  The story that Greg shares is so outrageous that it seems fake, but the crew is convinced of its authenticity.  Wow. Everyone is convinced that the PS3 Slim video is real.  Hopefully this is true as this...

Engadget Podcast 155 – 07.17.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech924 days ago

The Palm Pre SDK has officially gone public and this sparks a discussion about the viability of web apps versus full apps.  Joshua is excited about the prospects of the Pre getting some applications, but is down on the idea of web apps in general.  This makes sense in a weird way. The biggest debate here centers around iTunes and Apple’s choice to break the Pre’s ability to natively sync by posing as an iPod.  This is a big, clear statement that Apple doesn’t want anything but their own products to interact with iTunes in a...

by Jonathan Downin in Games924 days ago

Wii Sports Resort is proving to be more than just a simple Nintendo cash-in.  The game seems to offer a whole lot of fun that takes advantage of Wii MotionPlus well.  Don’t make the mistake of going into it thinking you will get a sports experience of a game that was dedicated to a specific sport and there is a lot of fun to be had. NPDs are the big news this week and the numbers are not too good compared to last year.  The games industry is down overall and looks to stay that way for the coming months.  Prototype did much better than...

Joystiq Podcast 101 – Time Gentlemen, Please! edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games924 days ago

The Joystiq boys started “doing it live” with episode 100 and it seems to be the standard from here on out.  This adds a great dynamic to the podcast.  You can join in on the the festivities every Friday morning by joining in their chat room during the live stream. Being the head of a big gaming website, Chris should be experiencing games the way they were meant to be played and now that he got an HDTV, he finally is.  Take it from him, experiencing games on a big TV really is quite different from playing them on a small monitor,...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 99

by Jonathan Downin in Games925 days ago

The guys are about to hit the big 100 and the excitement level is high.  It is so high that all Greg Miller can think about is… what he is going to eat for lunch.  Yeah. The ever-present system wars discussion rears its head here and Ryan Geddes chooses the 360?  What kind of Playstation podcast is this?  They could at least have the decency to edit that out. Before episode 100 there will be a “best of” episode so make sure that you let the guys know about your favorite classic Podcast Beyond moments.  It seems very likely...

The Geekbox: Episode 23

by Jonathan Downin in Games926 days ago

All episodes of The Geekbox should start out with Fitch spilling details about a date, just as he does here.  It sounds like we may be in for a string a somewhat successful Fitch Hitch stories.  His first dinner date was successful and he is getting ready for date #2 in which he will be going to the girl’s house.  The anticipation is thick. Comic book and movie news is a big topic this week.  The casting of Ryan Renolds as Green Lantern has comic book fans excited, but generally not in a good way. Karen and Ryan Scott gave the first Tales...

A poll ends, a poll begins

by Jonathan Downin in Site926 days ago

The E3 poll has been up for a while and it is high-time we have a new one.  It looks like Microsoft won out on this one, but plenty of people were impressed with Sony’s showing as well.  Poor Nintendo– well, maybe they’re pretty happy with their position. The new poll centers around the new shows that after the lay-offs at 1UP earlier this year.  We decided to include only independent/start-up podcasts with the rule that at least 2 former 1UPers are involved.  There are a few exception, Rebel FM started with 2 former 1UP people...

at1UP: 07/14/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc927 days ago

There is a lot going on in this week’s at1UP.  Fortunately, the at1UP crew takes it upon themselves to detail the contents of the show leaving us with not much to do, just the way it should be. Travis is talking about the neuroscience of zombies this week and seems to be supporting an extremely controversial view that zombies have some brain function.  Science, shmience.  Zombies are dead– or undead.  What is this “partial brain activity” nonsense? On a side note, Mike Cruz was kind enough to invite me to be on the show...

Giant Bombcast 07-14-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games927 days ago

Over last weekend the guys made there way out to California Extreme.  This is one of the biggest annual “arcade game and pinball celebration” events around.  It sounds like the guys had a good time playing some classic games.  You’ll have to wait until next year if you missed it, but it sounds well-worth the admission price. Ryan and Vinny are doing a multi-part look at The Matrix Online.  It has been 4+ years since its release, and boy does it show.  This was probably never an amazing game and now it pretty abysmal, but that...

The HotSpot 07/14/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games927 days ago

You can always count on the HotSpot to make Tuesdays just a little bit better.  The announcement of Command & Conquer 4 is causing too much excitement.  Red Alert 3 didn’t set the world on fire and that was just released less than a year ago, so unless C&C4 is pretty innovative it may not do too well. Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade initiative is covered here and the guys seem positive on this years releases.  Trials HD sounds like a very interesting game despite its clunky title.  Splosion Man also sounds like a ton of fun. ...

CO-OP | Episode 204 – Big Brother, Little Brother

by Jonathan Downin in Games928 days ago

This week’s CO-OP has quite an eclectic group of games.  First up is Rolando 2 for the iPhone.  It looks like it offers gameplay that is similar to the Patapon, but since the iPhone has an accelorometer, tilting the phone is an intuitive control method for the game. Next up is Cellfactor.  This one has flown completely under the radar, and by the sound of things this is reflected in the amount of people playing online.  It is a downloadable budget first person shooter that has an updated Quake 3 vibe to it.  It just doesn’t seem...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 121 – Mum

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies928 days ago

The guys saw Bruno this week and the opinion all around is that it was enjoyable.  It’s not going to be for everyone, but there is some substance along with the funny in this one. It really is all about 500 Days of Summer here though.  Jeff and Dan just might be in love with this movie and even Alex enjoyed it.  As Dan says, “don’t run or walk, drive.”  That’s not too clear, but he must mean go see it now! After getting a glimpse at Alex and Dan’s places, we get to see Jeff’s place in this week’s...
