Windows Weekly 116: Bring On The Bugs

by Jonathan Downin in Tech917 days ago

Windows 7 is finished and in the hands of PC manufacturers.  This sounds good, but unfortunately it won’t be commercially available until October.  You can always still grab the release candidate though. If you ever doubted that Paul knows what he is talking about when it comes to Windows, consider this, he has the screens and button presses of the Windows 7 install memorized.  This means he can basically do a full Windows 7 install, from scratch, without looking at the screen.  That speaks volumes not only about him, but also about the...

Wii Sports Resort get a good chunk of time near the beginning here and it sounds like a home-run.  John puts it well when he says that Nintendo are the masters of making peripherals that ship with software that makes it really hard not to buy them.  Will this give the Wii its 2nd wind after the recent decline in sales? The World of Warcraft movie has “hit” written all over it.  Sam Raimi, like him or not, has proven he can make good/marketable movies.  Once you add Legendary Pictures and WoW’s 15 million current players into...

Engadget Podcast 156 – 07.24.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech917 days ago

There has been a lot of hope leading up to the release of the HTC Hero that it would be the 1st real Android showcase, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case.  Again, the hardware is just not up to the task with it lacking in pure horsepower and the keyboard simply not delivering.  Maybe next time.  Catch the details in Joshua’s review. The announcement of the partnership between Plastic Logic and Barnes & Noble shows promise as the first platform that could rival Amazon’s Kindle.  This news couldn’t come at a better...

gdgt weekly 048

by Jonathan Downin in Tech917 days ago

Amazon remotely removed copies of 1984 from users’ Kindles last week and subsequently baffled many with the irony of their actions.  Things have since been explained, but it still spurs a lot of discussion on the still-present problems DRM poses.  It’s inexplicably weird how the book this happened with was 1984.  Irony at its finest. After developing HD-DVD, and subsequently losing out to Sony’s standard, Toshiba is now ready to produce Blu-ray players.  This is not too surprising after the recent announcement that Blu-ray...

Joystiq Podcast 102 – Vystal edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games917 days ago

The Joystiq crew continues doing the show live.  If you want to catch it live and join in on the discussion, the recording usually takes place at around 9:30am EST on uStream. Ludwig’s love of Monkey Island is in full affect here.  Is it just the people who loved the original that are loving this re-release and new episodic TellTale entry?  It’s hard to tell, but those that have no connection to the original certainly don’t seem to be as taken by the recent releases. There is a World of Warcraft movie in pre-production with...

Rebel FM Episode 26 – 07/23/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games918 days ago

Hello new intro song and podcast art.  Tyler is getting into Dead Space.  The game was heavily covered around its release by the enthusiast press, but it ultimately didn’t sell too well.  It is a great evolution of the action/horror genre and it’s great to hear it still getting some press this long after its release. The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is out and the consensus is that it is a great remake of a classic game.  Matt has a few qualms with the updated graphics, but it seems like it is more due to the limitations...

Podcast Beyond: The Best of Beyond

by Jonathan Downin in Games918 days ago

The Beyond guys are just about to hit 100, but before they do, they would like to share some of the best moments of the past 99 episodes.  These were all submitted by listeners, so you can be sure that some of your favorites are here too. It is no surprise that many of the best clips include Greg Miller to some extent.  Roper is the one who holds it all together, but Miller is the star here.  It really wouldn’t be Podcast Beyond without Ryan Clements though either.  Jeff Haynes is now on the PC team and listening to some of these clips...

The Geekbox: Episode 24

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc918 days ago

It is a bit of a subdued episode this week without Karen and Greg to mix it up, but Jade Kraus and Justin Haywald from 1UP are on to round out the group.  As usual, Burn Notice starts off the discussion, but Jade and Justin are not followers, so things aren’t too lively. Justin hints at the fact that he has been playing the sequel to Professor Layton and the series sounds to only be getting better.  The first game got a lot of press coverage and was pushed pretty hard by Nintendo, but not everyone has played it.  Now may be a great time...

MacBreak Weekly 150: Prove It

by Jonathan Downin in Tech919 days ago

The tablet rumor is running rampant again and the guys are always happy to speculate on new products.  Leo wants something with a keyboard and that is a common request from many wanting a small computing device. After returning from China, Leo learned that AT&T had measured he usage to be 250Mb while overseas.  The curious thing is that his iPhone reported only 100Mb of usage over that time.  There is something strange going on with this type of discrepancy and with the usage amounting to over $800 worth of extra charges, this is not a small...

Diggnation | Episode 212 – WWKAD: What Would Kevin And Alex Do?

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Tech920 days ago

The first story up front here is the Nazi stealth fighter.  As Kevin and Alex cover, this was basically an American stealth bomber 20 years before its inception.  It is pretty amazing to see how hostory could have been so different with just a few tweaks. Tim Burton has been at the forefront of visual design in films for the past 15 years and now he is putting his spin on Alice in Wonderland.  The concept art alone shows that this movie is starting in the right place.  This is the kind of stuff we wish would show up in game design. Kevin and...

Giant Bombcast 07-21-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games920 days ago

The guys threw a Giant Bomb shindig including fighting games and many adult beverages last Friday and they have more than a few things to share about the night.  It is always cool to see sites like this holding community events, hopefully they do more of these. The Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition will include night-vision goggles, and from the sound of things, Jeff and Vinny have more than a few ideas about what to do with them.  The Giant Bombcast always brings the laughs, but Jeff’s emphatic explanation of why he needs the goggles is...

The HotSpot 07/21/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games920 days ago

If you are waiting to pick up your copy of Alan Wake this Winter for PC, you will be waiting longer than you thought.  Developer, Remedy, has recently commented that the PC version is not a priority and will not ship alongside the Xbox 360 version. It has been confirmed that the PSP will be receiving iPhone/iPod touch-style apps.  This could be an interesting additional feature for the PSP, but without any persistent online connection the applications are somewhat limited in their potential functionality. The “game pick-up lines” segment...

Yes, that’s me.  Mike asked me to join in on the podcast this week and I was more than happy to oblige.  I talk a bit about CastMedium and also touch on the podcast space in general. After my ramblings, the group moves on to more pressing issues such as the zombie/nazi epic, Dead Snow.  If only the characters involved knew the zombies wanted gold from the beginning. Mike had a bad run-in with Taco Bell on Sunday and he is happy to share the sequence of events here. This was my first guest appearance, so be sure to let me know what you think...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 122 – Millionaire Jesus

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies920 days ago

How did this happen?  The latest Harry Potter movie is praised all-around here.  It sounds like the tone has shifted to be a little darker than the previous installments and the acting even gets a nod for being great. Trine is the game of the week for many.  It continues to leave positive impression, but the controller issue creeps up again here.  If you are getting it for PC you may want to have an Xbox 360 controller handy in case the keyboard controls aren’t doing it for you. Monkey Island has Jeff and Dan living in nostalgic bliss. ...

CO-OP | Episode 205 – 1337 h4x0rs

by Jonathan Downin in Games920 days ago

Brad from GiantBomb is on this week talking about Trine with Matt.  They each played the game on different platforms so we get a nice comparison between the 2 versions.  It sounds like some may like controller over WASD controls, but they both stack up well.  The PSN price of $20 makes Steam’s $30 price point seem inflated even the the game seems worth $30 if that was the only price point. Twisted Pixel had moderate success with The Maw, but it seems what that game really accomplished was putting their name on the map since ‘Splosion...
