When David Hayter cranks out a couple lines as Solid Snake, you know that you’re at a great Comic-Con roundtable. Jeff Goldsmith brings Josh Olson, David Hayter and Gregory Noveck together to talk some cinema, kicking it off with talk about the Watchmen adaptation. Josh takes a particularly bitter stand against the sacrifice of creative integrity to commercial success, citing Transformers 2 continually. The discussion takes a turn for the ‘rags to riches’ stories of all three of the guests, giving David yet another chance to assume the Snake voice.
The last big topic the panel hits on is theme, which turns out to be a point of contention. Josh makes it clear that screenwriters shouldn’t focus too much on theme, but David rebuts with his belief that theme is intertwined through all parts of a film, including character and plot. Gregory continually offers the interesting point of view of a film executive, saying that the central purpose of a film is the important part and theme comes with time.
