Creative Screenwriting – 2009 Comic-Con Q&A

by Jon Cole in Movies910 days ago

When David Hayter cranks out a couple lines as Solid Snake, you know that you’re at a great Comic-Con roundtable.  Jeff Goldsmith brings Josh Olson, David Hayter and Gregory Noveck together to talk some cinema, kicking it off with talk about the Watchmen adaptation.  Josh takes a particularly bitter stand against the sacrifice of creative integrity to commercial success, citing Transformers 2 continually.  The discussion takes a turn for the ‘rags to riches’ stories of all three of the guests, giving David yet another chance to assume the...

Listen UP: 07/31/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games910 days ago

David starts out this week’s cast talking about Shadow Complex.  He seems to be enjoying it a lot and for anyone with some nostalgia tied to retro Metroid or Castlevania titles, it sounds like a must buy.  $15 for a title like this is a steal. Borderlands continues to get good press.  It’s been said before, but the change in art style has revolutionized peoples excitement level for the game.  That doesn’t mean that the core mechanics weren’t good before, but don’t underestimate making a great game accessible with...

Filmspotting #267: Funny People / Ikiru / Top 5 Movies About Comedy

by Jon Cole in Movies910 days ago

This week, Adam and Matty talk about Judd Apatow’s latest comedy, Funny People.  While they certainly have their complaints, the guys think the film delivers with some fantastic jokes and plenty of worthwhile cameos.  Adam attributes Funny People’s weakest moments to the movie’s final half-hour, which jams two hours worth of plot development into a “contrived” conclusion that doesn’t work. In their listener feedback segment, Matty catches some flak for neglecting to include a couple of films in his top five movies of 2009 so far, but...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 129

by Jonathan Downin in Games910 days ago

It’s apparent that both Microsoft and Sony have taken to releasing strong downloadable games during the summer months.  With good retail releases not too common, this is a great for them and for us.  This week’s game not to miss looks to be Fat Princess. A TellTale developer said on their official forums that the iPhone is a more graphically powerful platform than the Wii.  This is a pretty striking statement, and if true makes it even clearer how underpowered the Wii really is.  TellTale should put their new 3D iterations of the...

Joystiq Podcast 103 – 2010 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games910 days ago

The Activision/DoubleFine lawsuit is still in the news, but this time it is good news.  The judge overseeing the suit has stated that he doesn’t think Activision’s case has a high chance for success and that the suit should not affect the games release.  Activision is getting what they deserve with this one. A lot of big games that were set for release in the holiday season have been delayed until Q1 2010.  This has lead to a rather sparse Q4 for this year and an unprecedented Q1 of next year.  That leaves Modern Warfare 2, Halo...

Engadget Podcast 157 – 07.31.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech910 days ago

Creative’s Zii EGG continues to excite with its so-called “stemcell powered” processor.  The guys aren’t too sure what that really means since it is not a bio-organic processor, but it seems like a marketing ploy.  That said, the product does seem to have potential. The rejection of Google Voice apps from the iTunes App store has Joshua and Nilay perplexed and almost upset.  Apple seems to be getting more heavy-handed with their rule over what apps are accepted in the store.  Joshua makes a good point lamenting that people...

Tekzilla | Episode 99

by Jonathan Downin in Tech911 days ago

The first gadget at the beginning of the show this week, after the talk of creepy spy cams, is the new Sonos Controller 200.  Sonos is a system that will pump synchronous music throughout your home from up to 32 connected speaker systems.  The new controller looks to be a great upgrade, but this system is expensive with the controller alone priced at $349, so it may not be for everyone. Veronica has brought in the MiFi and it is a small and wonderful piece of technology.  It connects to 3G and then puts out a wireless signal that up to 5 clients...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 100

by Jonathan Downin in Games911 days ago

It is Podcast Beyond episode 100 and the guys bring it strong with this fine episode.  If you don’t usually follow IGN podcasts or Podcast Beyond, this is a great place to start and see what you have been missing.  Also, Jeff is back for this episode since he is an integral part of the podcast’s history. The guys take this milestone as an opportunity to look back and share some of there favorite PlayStation stories.  This is dominated by PS2 launch stories.  When you hear the guys talking about the early PS2 days it makes you realize...

Rebel FM Episode 27 – 07/30/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games911 days ago

Rebel FM seems to get longer every week.  At almost 2 1/2 hours it feels like this could be cut down quite a bit, but there is a lot of actual game talk going on in this one. Arthur attended Comic-Con and he went hands-on with a lot of games that weren’t even available to the press during E3.  Dante’s Inferno sounds like it is shaping-up quite nicely.  If you like the God of War style and aren’t opposed by harsh and sexualized imagery, this could give God of War 3 a decent run for it’s money. Brutal Legend has been getting...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 120

by KirePDX in Games911 days ago

Even though Hilary is out this week, the TRL crew is still able to talk about cougars, 80′s pop culture, and do horrible impersonations while occasionally actually talking about 360 games.  There isn’t any agenda, and they cover a lot of random topics, but it’s an entertaining hour if you have the time. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the only notable release for the 360 this week during its “Summer of Arcade” series.  But with the recent release of Blazblue, King of Fighters 12 and the older Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, none...

The rumored Apple tablet continues to dominate discussion in the tech world.  Ryan feels like it will be atypical of Apple if it does actually get announced any time soon.  This is true, but with so many credible sources it seems almost guaranteed by next spring.  The rumors of Verizon fast-tracking their LTE service in preparation for such a device is particularly interesting. Sprint has been losing a lot of customers recently.  This is particularly troubling since this points out the fact that the Palm Pre has not been their iPhone.  This...

The Geekbox: Episode 25

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc911 days ago

The whole first part of this week’s Geekbox is interspersed with Karen’s fascination with a rather racy take on Alice in Wonderland extended fiction in comic form.  The world of comics is a crazy one, and this illustrates exactly why. Comic-Con gets the crew interested, but there is less actual comic book news coming out of the show every year.  The conversation quickly moves onto TV and then movies.  It sounds like Bruno entertained and Fitch has the best story to tell about his experience taking dates to both Bruno and Borat a few...

Scene Unseen – “Orphan”

by Jon Cole in Movies911 days ago

Chris and Jimmy take a look at Orphan, the recently released horror thriller that tells the story of a family who adopts a 9-year old girl who isn’t what she seems.  As per usual, Jimmy bases part of his review on the marketing, which leads to the pair’s dissection of the striking, creepy movie poster.  The guys praise Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard for bringing good acting to a neglected genre.  They point out the fairly mixed reviews, but Chris attributes that to the juxtaposition between the neophyte director Jaume Collet-Serra and the...

at1UP: 07/29/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games912 days ago

The first big piece of news this week is the new 1UP front page.  It looks like 1UP is trying to showcase new additions to the site and provide a more time-line like content showcase that is akin to a blog in some ways.  It’s definitely a step in the right direction so congrats to the people who worked on this. Zombie coffee shops anyone?  Who knows what it means, but come up with a good name for one, shoot it off to the at1UP crew and you could find yourself walking down the street in an almost new Fallout 3 T-shirt. The whole aftershow...

Diggnation | Episode 213 – 800 Bajillion Manillion Dollars

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Tech913 days ago

If you were saddened by the recent news that Comedy Central was not planning to bring the original voice cast of Futurama back due to budgetary reasons, you will be happy with this first story.  Apparently, John DiMaggio, voice of Bender and others, was at the Futurama Comic-Con panel and hinted that things will probably work out in bringing the original cast back. The trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has been released and it looks like– Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton.  The guys have some reservations, and rightfully...
