Player One Podcast | Episode 138 – Tripping the moisture sensor

by Jonathan Downin in Games957 days ago

Greg Ford starts off this one by talking a bit about his E3 experiences.  He is mostly lamenting how tiring it was to cover the show, but he does field some questions from the guys about a few things including Project Natal.  Microsoft’s new motion technology comes off a little better this week with the guys, but not by much. CJ had a quite eventful week with an ordeal including his iPhone and Apple refusing to replace it due to suspected water damage.  As it turns out, he just had some pocket lint stuck in the headphone jack.  Yeah. Infamous...

Invisible Walls – Episode 61

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

There is some talk of not-so-exclusive announcements made at E3 for Microsoft and Sony in Final Fantasy XIV and Metal Gear Solid Rising here at the beginning.  It’s strange how these companies posture games as exclusive when they know the facts will get out within days if not hours. Booth babes get a whole discussion in the middle here with a whole lot of uncomfortable video to go along with it. Prototype gets a lot of love here with Shane almost gushing about it.  Among the whole Infamous/Prototype debate Infamous has been the winner, but...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 123

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

As tends to be the case on Game Scoop there is not too much hard game talk here.  We do get the chance to witness Hilary and Nate being reunited. There is quite a bit of discussion about Valve and the announcement Left 4 Dead 2.  There has been quite a controversy with people claiming that Valve is just trying to milk the franchise while it’s hot and not delivering on their promises of additional DLC for the first game.  They make some good points here so give it a listen. Unfortunately there is no “Knockin’ Boots” segment...

Engadget Podcast 150 – 06.12.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech959 days ago

We gotta mention this up-front, this is a very Apple heavy episode, so if you are not into the big fruit company’s stuff you may want to give this one a pass. Now that only the intelligent people are reading this, we can get into it. First up is iPhone 3G S stuff.  On the surface it doesn’t look like there is that much new with the phone.  It looks exactly the same, but the internals are all new.  The guys are talking to a lot of the business related issues with a little bit of Pre comparisons thrown in. The MacBook Pro line gets...

gdgt roundtable – Palm Pre

by Jonathan Downin in Tech959 days ago

The Palm Pre launched last Saturday and it is one of the biggest things to happen in the smartphone market since the launch of the somewhat underwhelming Android platform with the G1. There is a lot of discussion with a lot of cheerleading going on.  It sounds like there are many things to like about the Pre.  WebOS looks to be a great, solid first entry into the smartphone OS market.  It is equated here to the iPhone 2.0 software in its maturity and that is saying a lot.  The actual hardware leaves a little to be desired with the puzzling sharp...

Listen UP: 06/12/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

This is an absolutely epic episode of Listen UP.  Everything from E3 is covered here with the usual skew towards the business side of the games industry. Games the have been played this week fall into two main categories of good and bad this week with Red Faction and Infamous in the former and Indiana Jones off the deep end of the latter.  Unfortunately, Prototype seems to fall into the later as well to some extent. The whole middle section is taken up with they guys talking about the market strategies of the big companies and at this point it...

Joystiq Podcast 099 – Post-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

E3 episode wrap-up has arrived.  Joystiq had a lo of great coverage of E3 this year and they are talking about their thoughts here including who they thought had the best showing.  Spoiler:  the company starts with an M. There is some notable news this week.  The whole Activision suing EA/Double Fine is still pretty crazy.  Also, Max Payne 3 looks to be an even more cynical take on the character, if that’s even possible.  Ready for some bald, dual pistol wielding slow-mo action?  If so, you are in for a treat. The guys are talking about...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 94

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

The PS3 guys have their impressions of E3 here since they didn’t have a podcast last week. Motion controllers start off the discussion, but it soon leads in talk about Sony’s cureent unenviable 3rd place position.  No one is happy about there not being a price drop announced and it leaves the crew wondering if maybe it is too late for the PS3 to overtake the 360. The guys also share their thoughts on the PSP Go, and as everyone else, wish it was cheaper. Covered topics and games: Criterion Need for Speed in 2010, Sony motion controller,...

Rebel FM Episode 21 – 06/11/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

First up is the regular game talk.  The Infamous/Prototype debate can basically be settled at this point.  It is all but unanimous that Prototype is a little shallow and is graphically underwhelming.  Infamous has its own share of issues, but the bottom line is that it is just fun. The second segment is dedicated to motion controllers.  It is all speculation at this point, but one good point is that you can’t deny that Nintendo is handling the release of Wii Motion Plus very well.  Bundling it with a ton of different games is absolutely...

Tekzilla | Episode 92

by Jonathan Downin in Tech960 days ago

The Apple announcements get overshadowed at the beginning here by Veronica’s obsession with The Sims 3, but we aren’t ones to be condemning anyone for that.  Seriously, that is one addicting game. There is a great interview with Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress on this episode.  While this may not interest everyone, it is interesting for those of us who live in it every day. Secret Shortcut Saves Thousands of Mouse Clicks, Does Blackle Really Save Energy Over Google? What’s In Store for WordPress? Veronica Interviews Matt...

at1UP: 06/11/200960

by Jonathan Downin in Games960 days ago

After a random start with the regular crew sharing some of their favorite things it is a Mielke extravaganza.  With a baby on the way, an upcoming marriage and moving to Japan, he has a lot on his plate and he has a lot to say about it. James Mielke is a legend in games journalism, so if you don’t know who he is, you might as well start here.  He has interviewed almost all of the legendary Japanese developers and it is only fitting that he is taking a position as a producer in a very prominent Japanese development house.  The news on what...

The Geekbox: Episode 18

by Jonathan Downin in Games961 days ago

After a week’s absense for E3 the Geekbox crew is back.  In usual fashion, spoilers are not avoided in any way, so if you haven’t seen UP yet you may want to skip the first 20 minutes. E3 is the focus here, but the takes here are fresh as they tend to be on The Geekbox.  The trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic has galvanized the group with Karen and loving it and Greg feeling like it is not too cool to represent an MMO like that.  It really has to be taken as a “flavor piece.” There is some talk about Project Natal...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Ep. 115

by Jonathan Downin in Games961 days ago

It’s been about a month since the last one, but we finally get another episode of Three Red Lights. The guys are of course covering E3 stuff, but as always, they meander about the topics quite a bit.  More then spending a lot of time on individual games, most of the conversation is based around where it looks like Microsoft is headin with their general Xbox strategy. There is a fair amount of Project Natal talk though.  All we can do is hope that Microsoft gets it out sooner rather than later so all the speculation can stop, but word is...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 139

by Jonathan Downin in Games961 days ago

Red Faction is getting a lot of coverage.  It seems fair to say that if you would have asked anyone a couple months ago if they thought they would be getting into this game, they almost certainly would have said no.  The game has definitely flown under the radar, but it seems to be getting some good word of mouth. The GWJ guys are talking about E3 here, as they are required by law to do, but they do try to steer clear of the bigger things and give due time to some of the smaller announcements and games.    Motion controllers get a mixed response,...

MacBreak Weekly 144: WWDC Wrap Up

by Jonathan Downin in Tech962 days ago

WWDC has come and gone, and as expected we got a new iPhone.  The new iPhone 3GS is a deceptive update in that it looks almost identical to the 3G, but the internals are all new including a faster processor, a new 3 megapixel camera, built-in digital compass and many other new features. There was a lot of news about Snow Leopard, the most significant of which is that when it releases in September it will retail for $29.  With all the refinements and new technologies being incorporated this is an absolute steal. The MacBook Pro line has seen updates...
