gdgt roundtable – Palm Pre

by Jonathan Downin in TechJune 12th, 2009 @ 9:08 pm

gdgt weeklyThe Palm Pre launched last Saturday and it is one of the biggest things to happen in the smartphone market since the launch of the somewhat underwhelming Android platform with the G1.

There is a lot of discussion with a lot of cheerleading going on.  It sounds like there are many things to like about the Pre.  WebOS looks to be a great, solid first entry into the smartphone OS market.  It is equated here to the iPhone 2.0 software in its maturity and that is saying a lot.  The actual hardware leaves a little to be desired with the puzzling sharp edge on the keyboard.

As anyone who is rooting for technology on the whole, the Pre is an exciting device, but as Chris Ziegler points out, this should not be viewed as a “conquest device” by Palm.  WebOS is the real exciting part of this whole thing and Palm needs to make that the real focus here.  As the guys lament near the end with Leo, hopefully it’s not to late for Palm to wedge their way into the market.

Our last gdgt roundtable post got a comment from Ryan Block himself, let’s see if we misrepresent anything enough to warrant a response on this one.

We’ve all been waiting for this show a long time — years it feels like. Yeah, this week it’s all about the Palm Pre. We’re going to dig deep on webOS, the Pre, the Palm reboot that brought them into being, and even on how the newly announced iPhone 3G S and $99 iPhone 3G might affect Palm’s plans.

Joining us this week with their thoughts and impressions are the one and only Leo Laporte and Engadget Mobile’s own Chris Ziegler. But stick around until the end, because we’re also going to take a look way back to 2007 in a bonus segment with our old pal Josh Topolsky about the open letter the three of us wrote Palm.

These round table remarksrmarks are not meaningful. …sharp edge pf underside of key pad… Give me a break. There’s lots to talk about. This is apparently not the venue. Go to our site nas I’ll provide a summary of our testing and sugestions. JimWilson

  2. It’s a little hard to make out what you are saying.

While the Pre sounds like a pretty amazing device, it is important that with Palm’s first hardware offering that things like sharp edges are not overlooked. Is it a deal breaker? Of course not, but it is notable.
