The Geekbox: Episode 21

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Movies, TV941 days ago

This week’s episode is a great one.  With Fitch gone, the crew has launched a campaign to get him a date.  If you are an eligible woman over 25 send your submission in to winadatewithfitch at geekbox.net.  This is going to be good. Special guests from the old 1UP days, Tom Edwards and Susie Ochs, are on the show so you can expect a lot of reminiscing.  There are some fun stories here. On a side note, Tom mentions the Korean film Oldboy.  If you haven’t seen it, and aren’t too easily disturbed, this is a movie you must watch. No...

The HotSpot 06/30/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games941 days ago

Tranformers 2 gets utterly destroyed during the whole length of this podcast.  These guys not only hated the movie, they were actively insulted by it. One of the hallmarks of The HotSpot has always been news and they just seem to be getting better at it.  The crew takes this stuff seriously and it is a great differentiator from the common what-you’ve-been playing format. There is a lot of movie talk on this one with a producer of the Mortal Kombat film suing Midway and the Uncharted movie being scripted. Covered topics and games: Transformers...

CO-OP | Episode 202 – Jason’s Day Off

by Jonathan Downin in Games942 days ago

First game of the show is the Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Beta.  Greg Ford and Tyler Barber are sitting in on this one and although what everyone really wants is the single-player game, the consensus is that this is a lot of fun.  The game is gorgeous. Star Defense for iPhone gets some love from Ryan, but it seems like that game is getting a bit more praise than it deserves due to the platform. Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood has the guys talking here as well.  The developers chose a great time to put this game out.  It sounds very solid, and that...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 119 – Liftupable

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies942 days ago

The movie up this week is Transformers 2 and Alex’s kind remarks may be the first the movie has received.  Jeff and Dan aren’t having any of it, but Dan does praise the the movie’s visual effects and sound design. There is some serious love for The Last Airbender teaser trailer, and it does look amazing. The guys are doing something called Geocaching this week.  This is basically a community based scavenger hunt/treasure hunt that is based on GPS coordinates.  It looks amazing fun so if you aren’t in the know, check it...

Xbox 360 Fancast 124 — Sweatin’ It

by Jonathan Downin in Games942 days ago

The guys are talking about a comment made by the legendary Michael Pachter that Twitter, Facebook and last.fm were the biggest announcements for Microsoft at E3.  They don’t seem to be completely on-board with the idea, but Richard does make some points that Microsoft wants to make the Xbox a centralized computing device more than gaming machine, and in that sense, it does make sense. The developer of the Xbox Community game is saying that releasing games in that capacity is not fanancially viable and that it should be used to put out prototypes...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 009

by Jonathan Downin in Games942 days ago

The regular Mobcast crew is all together on this one with the addition of Matt Chandronait from Area5 sitting in on this one. There are some interesting topics this week including one on adventure games.  Adventure games seem to be making a small comeback with the likes of Sam & Max, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Heavy Rain.  One idea that is put here is that there are more adventure games than we think, it’s just that they don’t adhere to the classic formula, for example, Brutal Legend. Rage quitting is another...

TWiT 201: HI LEO LAPORTE FOR THROATBEARDS

by Jonathan Downin in Tech942 days ago

This week’s TWiT is a fun one.  The smaller group of Leo, Dvorak and Brian Brushwood is perfect here.  The guys play off each other extremely well.  Hopefully John and Brian are on more often together. The news that advertisers are now paying more for big shows on Hulu than on TV is very exciting.  This is a great sign that advertisers are taking notice of the potential of online video and how the audience is much more valuable there as it is highly targeted.  Expect to be able to watch what you want, when you want more from here on out. The...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #324: Geoff Keighley, Worms 2 and behind the scenes at E3

by Jonathan Downin in Games943 days ago

We get an interview with Geoff Keighly up front here and he is talking about the Game Critic Awards.  There are a lot of great picks here and Geoff always has a lot of interesting commentary. An interview with the Worms 2: Armageddon developer is lackluster.  The game will probably be fun if you like that old-school tanks style gameplay, but Team 17 has lost some goodwill with the latest Leisure Suit Larry game. If you like the inside-baseball information, the interview with Aaron Greenberg is entertaining.  He is the guys that basically planned...

Listen UP: 06/26/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games945 days ago

Garnett and crew are back this week with a full-length edition.  Sharkey is on for the first part of this one, but he inexplicably disappears after getting pretty worked up over The Conduit.  It seems like he needed to go get some coffee if you get the drift. David has started playing through Shadow of the Collosus for the first time and he is talking about his impressions after recently finishing Ico.  If you haven’t played either of these, get a hold of a copy, you are in for a treat. Leading in with the news about Activision threatening...

Engadget Podcast 152 – 06.26.2009: The Day the Music Died 2

by Jonathan Downin in Tech945 days ago

The new Nokia N97 rules the first part of this week’s podcast.  The write-up over at Engadget is something pretty special, so if you have 20 minutes, go check that out.  Long story short, it’s okay, but don’t call it a comeback. The official pricing for Windows 7 has been released by Microsoft and there are so many things going wrong here that it’s hard to comprehend.  How is it that Microsoft can continually be so clueless about how they should market their products?  Vista was a flop, get people onto Windows 7 in a...

Joystiq Podcast 99.75 – Lettuce smokers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games945 days ago

The guys have procured a soundboard, and in typical Joystiq fashion they have taken something that is completely played out and made it funny again.  There is one exception, Kindergarten Cop sound bytes, not yet funny again.  Give it a couple more years. A lot of talk about the mergers and acquisitions going on in the game industry lately.  Chris, with his undying love for id, interviewed John Carmack about the Zenimax deal and there are some interesting tidbits in there so go check it out. Rounding out the show is the guys talking about a Q&A...

Rebel FM’s Thanksgiving in July Short-tacular!

by Jonathan Downin in Games946 days ago

The guys over at Bethesda keep cranking out the DLC for Fallout 3 and it sounds like it just keeps getting better.  Arthur has played quite a bit of it and he is enjoying it.  He is also playing the new Call of Juarez and it sounds equally entertaining. Battlefield 1943 get some love as does the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta.  There are going to be a lot of great multiplayer games this year with these and Halo ODST out this fall. Covered topics and games: Fallout 3: Point Lookout, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Overlord 2, Battlefield 1943, Uncharted...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 96

by Jonathan Downin in Games946 days ago

Not too much going on in the gaming scene right now.  Even though some great games have already come out this year we are starting to feel the summer lull. The PSN release of Final Fantasy VII sold over 100,000 units in its first 2 weeks of release.  Come on SquareEnix, just put out that remake already, people are obviously interested in playing FFVII again. The guys have a discussion about the impact of companies being acquired or merging with the news of id/Bethesda and Mythic/Bioware. Covered topics and games: Final Fantasy VII, motion controller,...

gdgt weekly 044 – 06.25.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech946 days ago

The Android platform is finally starting to get some new handsets other than the G1.  The HTC Hero and myTouch 3G are talked about here with multitouch being worked into the mix even though Android doesn’t support it natively. Inexplicably there is some printer talk on this week.  It’s obvious that we don’t really need printers to do much more than print things as easily, flexibly and fast as possible.  We don’t need touchscreen printers. The guys keep teasing the launch of gdgt.com so it must be close.  I think we are...

The Geekbox: Episode 20

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc946 days ago

Starting this one is some TV talk as per usual, but Ryan reveals that in addition to Burn Notice, he has also been watching Jon and Kate Plus 8.  Things take a turn for the weirder when the crew gets into a little bit of Mario fan fiction creation though. There is a big discussion about games journalism in the middle here where the group talks about what gives one person more credibility than someone else.  Greg takes the chance to tell people to write for Bitmob if they want to break into the industry. Karen is getting her driver’s license...
