Rebel FM Episode 17 – 5/06/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games995 days ago

There are a lot of games covered on this one.  Everyone has been playing something, but not too much.  This leads to some extended conversions about Killzone 2, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4 and a few others.  Arthur has some pretty negative sentiments about Metal Gear Solid 4 and Sterling airs one of his own rants about Wolverine. The topic of the week is a pretty interesting one.  Anyone who listens to gaming podcasts, or reads this site for that matter, has probably been a gamer for a long time.  But no matter how long you have been playing...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 90

by Jonathan Downin in Games995 days ago

With no Greg or Jeff Podcast Beyond is quite a bit less beyond. Ryan Clemments comes through with an interview with the people behind Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!  If you haven’t heard of it, you are not alone.  It is coming from the people that make Disgaea though so it could be a fun little PSP title. With E3 quickly approaching the guys are pondering what could be coming.  They of course predict that Sony will have the biggest and most exciting announcements of the show.  If the Ico and Shadow of the Collosus team shows anything...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 001

by Jonathan Downin in Games995 days ago

If you haven’t heard, Dan Hsu has teamed up with some of his old 1UP cohorts Demian Linn, Greg Ford and Michael Donahoe to launch a new community based gaming site called Bitmob.  It is centered around the idea of providing off-beat gaming commentary while allowing community contributions make it into the editorial section. Marking the launch of the site is the first Mobcast which features many familiar voices.  The show has somewhat of a unique hook of 5 guys and 5 topics each week.  Each person will bring a topic that they think is interesting...

gdgt weekly 037 – 05.07.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech995 days ago

As you probably know by now, Amazon announced their Kindle DX which is basically a Kindle 2 with a larger 9.7 inch screen.  It is being positioned as a textbook and newspaper device.  Ryan and Peter seem to feel like it is in a weird place release and product wise and doesn’t sell itself to students too well with its rather hefty $489 price point.  It may be better suited to a subsidized newspaper market though. There have been rumors flying around about a new motion-controlled interface for the Xbox 360 that uses a motion bar.  While...

Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts | Part 3 – at1UP

by Jonathan Downin in Features995 days ago

It’s Thursday, and that means another installment of Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts.  We started strong with Rebel FM and Gamers with Jobs and the trend continues this week with 1UP’s newest podcast host Mike Cruz of at1UP. After the UGO buyout earlier this year in January, 1UP was flying slim on podcasts.  Along with Good Grief, at1UP was launched as a somewhat new approach to podcasts at the site with an emphasis on community.  It is billed as a show that focuses on the “stories behind the stories” over at 1UP,...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 113

by Jonathan Downin in Games996 days ago

Charles Onyett has landed.  Wolverine is unavoidable among the gaming crowd.  No good sentiments about it here as usual.  How is that a movie this big with such a large budget can still have such horrible CG? There is a new retail Gears of War 2 collection titled “All Fronts Collection” that will include all DLC up to this point and many other extras.  It will not include an actual disc, only a code to download the featured content.  At a presumed $20 it is a pretty amazing deal, but a little hard to swallow for those that got the...

Diggnation | Episode 201 – Semi-Instant

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Tech997 days ago

The boys start out on an unusually strait-forward and serious story this week about Google’s experiments with Captcha methods.  If you aren’t familiar with Captcha it is the system that verifies that you are a human when you enter a comment or signup for something on a website and have to enter some often indecipherable words.  Google new method looks like a nice change. The guys go on to talk about a story that covers some cool YouTube url tricks that can help you customize your YouTube experience whether you are on YouTube.com or...

MacBreak Weekly 139: Deploy The Ponytail

by Jonathan Downin in Tech997 days ago

Quickly up-front Leo mentions the rumors that Apple is looking to aquire some other big companies.  He mentions Twitter, but EA has also been rumored to be in Apple’s sights.  Apple is very cash heavy and recessions are a great time for acquisitions, but Twitter just doesn’t make sense.  With Apple making some serious waves in the gaming scene with the iPhone and iPod Touch the idea of them acquiring EA is interesting. The first real topic to be covered this week is the rumor that Amazon will be introducing a new, larger screen Kindle...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 134

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

Free Realms has just gone live, and if you are not aware, it is a free to play MMO from Sony.  As is becoming more and more popular it is based on the model that you can play all you want for free, but if you want certain game items and various other things you have to pay for them.  This is one of the biggest releases yet to try this model and according to the GWJ crew it is surprisingly good. The big segment this week is a sit down talk with Jerry “Tycho” Holkins of Penny Arcade.  Cory had a chance to grab Tycho for a while and...

Giant Bombcast 05-05-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

First up this week is an update from Giant Bomb designer Dave Snider who drops in to let us know about some updates that are coming to the site.  They are rolling out support for Xbox achievements as well as World of Warcraft achievements.  These will be built into a ranking system on Giant Bomb that rates you against the average of other players.  The whole system sounds pretty cool and innovative. The guys chime in with their thoughts on the rumored PSP Go!  Bottom line: something is coming and just wait for E3. Some old style games get covered...

at1UP: 05/05/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

The crew is discussing some movies this week including the horribly titled and executed Fighting.  It sounds more than forgettable, but maybe the joke fodder it provides justifies its existence. Phoenix Wright and the classic Bionic Commando are the only games that get covered this week.  If you are into torturing yourself go play some Bionic Commando.  If you are into getting pulled in by some wacky and enjoyable cartoon courtroom drama, give Phoenix Wright a go, there are about a billion of them so you will be able to track a copy of one of...

The HotSpot 05/05/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

Everyone is getting there word in on the UMD-less PSP Go! rumor.  The HotSpot crew Has Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner on this week and he has a unique perspective on it.  It is no surprise as a head of company who does a lot of downloadable titles, he is very interested in this.  The only people that really lose out at the prospect of this is retailers, which could be worked around to some extent with game vouchers being offered in place of physical UMDs. The Bioshock movie is on hold and everyone seems to have mixed feeling about it.  Apparently...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 111 – Twitterpated

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies998 days ago

The guys got to see both Wolverine: Origins and Star Trek this week and one of these was amazing and one wasn’t.  According to the guys Star Trek is more than they could have hoped for.  Visceral action, amazing story and appropriate fan service make this one a big winner.  Wolverine not so much on any of those. As has become somewhat of a tradition, the boys are doing their Annual Summer Movie Wager.  These wagers are always a lot of fun to watch and after seeing this one, it doesn’t look good for Alex again this year. Coming off...

CO-OP | Episode 109 – Another Day at the Office

by Jonathan Downin in Games998 days ago

Phantasy Star Portable doesn’t fare too well as the first game this week.  There is no internet play so you must be playing with people in the vicinity, but there don’t seem to be too many incentives to make the effort. According to the guys the story is horrible and there are quite a few problems with some mechanics and gameplay design choices.  You will probably want to give this one a pass. Fat Princess looks to be a game that may be able to bridge the gap between hardcore and mainstream with its accessible but deep gameplay and...

Out of the Game, Ep. 4

by Jonathan Downin in Games998 days ago

There is a lot of high level discussion going on here as is pretty usual with the Out of the Game crew.  Shawn and N’Gai have been reading the book “How We Decide,” which is about how our brains work as it pertains to making decisions under different circumstances.  They tie it into games as well so there is quite a lot of good stuff here. One of thing this leads into is gaming and how attention and environment can affect our play.  The observation is made that sometimes when you are in a context where you are somewhat distracted...
