The Geekbox RAW EDITION: Episode 16

by Jonathan Downin in Games, TV982 days ago

This is the episode that did it, we have to add a TV category to the podcast list.  It probably should have been done a while ago and we can’t avoid it any longer. Lost takes up a good 25 minutes of the beginning of this week’s episode.  If you have not seen the finale and care about the series skip past the first 27 minutes. The Lost talk leads into a Star Trek that is not quite as long as the Lost talk, but again, the Geekbox crew goes into detail so if you care and haven’t seen it, skip it.  You should be safe after the 47...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 136

by Jonathan Downin in Games983 days ago

This weeks show is not a typical one in that there is no topic of the week, but the guys take this opportunity to answer a lot of the email they have recently received.  The topics are all over and the games that are covered include no big games, but a lot of smaller ones. The GWJ crew are planning their first ever live show, which will take place on Sunday, May 24th at 8pm.  From the sound of things they tried once before without success, but they seemed to have figured things out. This week we get caught up on the email pile as we prepare for...

MacBreak Weekly 141: Wi-Fi Bubble Boy

by Jonathan Downin in Tech983 days ago

The big news of the week is that the Palm Pre will be launching on June 6th, 2 days ahead of Apple’s WWDC keynote.  Whether this is good timing or not is hard to tell, but it is certainly is a good thing that they are getting it out before the supposed announcement of the new iPhone hardware announcement. The iPhone 3 rumors are running rampant as WWDC is just 2 weeks away.  They range from it having an OLED screen and glowing apple logo and having an FM transmitter.  Some sound more plausible than others, but an OLED screen would be very...

Giant Bombcast 05-19-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games983 days ago

There are tons of games talked about on this one so here a big, fat list: Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bionic Commando, InFamous, Brutal Legend, Vattlefield 1943, Fable II, Fallout 3, Patapon 2, Ghostbusters, Punch Out!, Tony Hawk RIDE, new Kojima project and a few others. InFamous sounds like it really is going to be an amazing game.  Brad has played through it and he just teases his review which will be up very soon.  One thing that can be gleaned about his opinion is that the game is fun in a CrackDown sort of way. Over at Giantbomb.com...

The HotSpot 05/19/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games983 days ago

Right at the beginning here we get some hands-on impressions of Terminator: Salvation and Bionic Commando. It doesn”t sound like either if them deliver on too many fronts.  Terminator especially seems to be particularly forgettable with Bionic Commando having some redeeming values. There are some E3 predictions here including an Xbox 360 port of Metal Gear Solid 4, subtitled Oxide.  Also discussed is the potential of a price drop or redesign for the PS3.  PlayStation Home gets some talk time as well, but nobody has anything nice to say...

at1UP: 05/19/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games983 days ago

Ray Barnholt and Justin Haywald are on talking about the new DS “game” Personal Trainer: Walking.  It comes with a pedometer so you can track your distance and rhythm. The group is also talking about the current 1UP cover story on Heavy Rain.  There are a couple segments up now and the rest will be going up over the next few days.  This should be a pretty amazing showcase for the PS3. At the 25:30 mark we get another appearance from the Philipino Chrstopher Walken.  Wow. Ray Barnholt and Justin Haywald stop by to discuss who’s...

CO-OP | Episode 111 – Drop and Give me E3

by Jonathan Downin in Games984 days ago

First up this week Plants Vs. Zombies gets some discussion with the Brodeo master himself, Jeff Green, stopping by to share his love for the game.  It has been said by many recently, but Jeff is right in saying that from now on if PopCap announces a new game, everyone should pay attention. Sway is the iPhone game of the week so if that is your thing and have a few dollars to spare go check this one out. Where did Zeno Clash come from?  This game had next to no hype which is probably due to it being an indie game, but it looks incredible.  How...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 113 – Simulacrum

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies984 days ago

The movies covered this week are The Brothers Bloom and Angels and Demons.  The former comes from the brilliant Rian Johnson whose last movie was the  critically heralded Brick and the guys loved it.  The latter is, well– that second Dan Brown book. Sacred 2 takes up the game talk this week and all 3 of the guys had a great time with it.  It looks like it has to offer as a multiplayer RPG if you can look past the mediocre graphics and serviceable storytelling.  Some time is also given to discussion of the recently announced Tony Hawk...

Xbox 360 Fancast 117 — One One Seven

by Jonathan Downin in Games984 days ago

The whole crew has assembled in a rare aligning of the stars and it proves that the show is always better with all 4 of the guys. We have almost all heard the rumors of a Zune HD, but Xav shares some information he has heard about the possibility that Microsoft may be renaming some Xbox services to tie the two together.  This sounds very intriguing indeed. To commemorate the episode that shares the number of Master Chief the guys have Bungie’s community manager Brian Jarrard on the show this week.  They talk about the recent Halo 3 competition...

Out of the Game, Ep. 5

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc984 days ago

Out of the Game may be missing Shawn Elliot and Robert Ashley this week, but that doesn’t mean it is any less thought provoking and chock-full of interesting pontifications. The guys start out talk about disappointments in follow-ups to fan favorite series and how and why that happens.  This is spurred by the fact that Star Trek has been successfully rebooted and leads into a discussion about the Star Wars prequels and Matrix series. If you haven’t read the story over at Jeff’s blog, he had a moment of heroism on Saturday.  As...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #319 : Gel, Gamerscore Reset and Fight Night Round 4

by Jonathan Downin in Games984 days ago

Wow, this is a seriously long title. There are a lot of great interviews this week starting with the guys doing Gel who have recently joined ranks with the ever-growing Popcap.  Their new games sounds interesting and see how they did with Small Arms we could be looking at another fun, smaller XBLA game. Fight Night Round 4 sounds pretty amazing.  The graphics are very life-like and the physics-based gameplay is something that fighting game fans have been waiting for.  The only thing that could hold it back is that it is a boxing game. Interview:...

TWiT 195: A Series Of Tube Tops

by Jonathan Downin in Tech984 days ago

Another great episode of TWiT this week.  It’s nice that Leo mixes up the group a lot and having Dvorak on the show is always a good thing. If you haven’t heard about Wolfram Alpha yet Leo and the group talk about it this week.  As they iterate time and time again, it is not a search engine.  It’s purpose is to be able to provide statistical data for anything you are looking for.  It is a first of its kind and while it isn’t quite there yet, it is a pretty amazing service in theory.  GO check it out and you may be surprised...

Player One Podcast | Episode 134 – The Graphics are a Little Jackée

by Jonathan Downin in Games985 days ago

The rumored redesigned PS3 is again not getting much appreciation.  Nobody seems to like the presumed new look, but the prospect of a PS3 that doesn’t use the Spiderman font is something that does excite! Everyone goes through their games of the week, but the conversation picks up a lot at the end with talk moving onto Burnout Paradise and its new Cops and Robbers mode, Fat Princess and 1 Vs. 100.  It sounds like Fat Princess holds a lot of potential for some future multiplayer action. 1 Vs. 100 looks to be a very fresh take on how to handle...

Rebel FM Episode 18 – 05/15/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games986 days ago

A little late, but at least we got a new episode this week.  Maybe it is time Rebel FM officially changes their day of release to Friday. It’s nice to have Tyler on the show.  Having someone around who is interested in straying beyond the beaten path and try games that aren’t exactly in the public eye is refreshing.  This week he is talking about the Russian developed Cryostasis. Arthur has finally finished the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and he wasn’t too pleased with the sharp turn from pulp serial to science...

The Geekbox: Episode 15

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc987 days ago

Star Trek talk headlines the podcast with everyone chiming in on what they thought of the film.  Everyone loved it, including Ryan Scott who has a weirdly dedicated aversion to all previous entries in the series. Karen is training to enter the competitive crossword world.  This is a side of gaming that most probably haven’t even thought about. There is curious change in the recent Punch Out! of Piston Honda character being renamed to Piston Hondo.  The only thing that can be surmised from the change is that there must have been some request...
