The BS Report (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=2864045)
This highly entertaining show comes from ESPN columnist Bill Simmons, more commonly known as The Sports Guy. Though the show was hit-or-miss at first, the past six or so months he’s gotten into a groove, and this multi-times-per-week guest-based show has become my favorite regular podcast. It hits mostly on sports, but with plenty of pop-culture references and movie and TV show breakdowns from the likes of Adam Corolla and Seth Meyers. What’s impressive is that even though he has on numerous different guests, he manages to have good chemistry with most of them.
This American Life (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/)
NPR’s Ira Glass hosts this weekly show in which the staff takes a theme and then delivers two or three segments on that subject. And pretty much each week, it sucks me in. The topics vary from understanding the recession to scenes from a mall to the surprisingly tense rivalry among part-time Santas, and the reporters do a great job giving you an understanding of the subject. It also serves as a refreshing br eak from all the gaming and sports-based podcasts I typically listen to.
A Life Well Wasted (http://alifewellwasted.com/)
Knowing I’m a fan of This American Life, you shouldn’t be surprised by this entry. Freelance game journo Robert Ashley records, edits, and produces this monthly ‘cast, in which he delves into a gaming topic and talks to gamers, experts, and any other willing and appropriate source to complement his piece. Subjects so far include the death of EGM and obsessive collectors, and Robert does a commendable job splicing in music and knowing how and when to cut down hours’ worth of interviews into a svelte yet packed one-hour show. A labor of love that makes me happy to be a gamer.
Greg Sewart [Player One Podcast | @sewart]
The Fanboys (http://www.thefanboys.net)
This might sound weird coming from the host of a gaming podcast…but I generally don’t like listening to gaming podcasts. The professional shows all tend to talk about the same things, and just tend to run together for me. The Fanboys always feels refreshingly original. Probably because it’s hosted by three guys who are decidedly not a part of the gaming industry. So nothing they say has a hint of “this is my professional opinion” or industry insider-ness. It’s just a bunch of normal dudes sitting around, talking about games and anything else that might enter the conversation. I think anyone who’s a fan of gaming can relate to that.
The Adam Carolla Podcast (http://www.adamcarolla.com)
Love him or hate him, Adam Carolla is a pretty entertaining guy. Even when the opinions he’s spewing don’t jive with my own, I can’t help but find him funny and compelling. This show tackles just about every subject under the sun, and has already featured a wide array of guests — from Iron Mike Tyson to Danica Patrick to that sports guy from ESPN. Adam and his guests always find a way to make everything worth listening to.
The Jayski Podcast (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=3240517)
Ford took my This American Life entry, so the last one on my list is this daily NASCAR news roundup. Yeah, that’s right…I said NASCAR. This is a great, short news podcast courtesy of ESPN that features loads of interviews and interesting tidbits about the drivers and events surrounding the greatest sport in North America.
But seriously, check out this American Life. It’s awesome.
As usual, feel free to jump into the comments and share your picks.
