Podcasters' Favorite Podcasts - Part 2 - at1UP

It’s Thursday, and that means another installment of Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts.  We started strong with Rebel FM and Gamers with Jobs and the trend continues this week with 1UP’s newest podcast host Mike Cruz of at1UP.

After the UGO buyout earlier this year in January, 1UP was flying slim on podcasts.  Along with Good Grief, at1UP was launched as a somewhat new approach to podcasts at the site with an emphasis on community.  It is billed as a show that focuses on the “stories behind the stories” over at 1UP, but that really doesn’t encompass what the show is about.  It’s fitting that one of Mike’s picks is TWiT, because at1UP really ends up being a short-form “This Week in Geek” show.  We have enough 90 minute and 2 hour shows and the 30 minute format suits this type of podcast perfectly.

If you are one of the people that may have stopped following 1UP closely after the switch-up a few months ago, at1UP should help you see that 1UP continues to deliver with personality and is still made up of people who love games.

(Cool) Shite on the Tube http://www.coolshite.net This was the first podcast I ever followed waaaaaay back in 2005. Its tagline was “praise, flaming and indifference about the films and other stuff we visually digest.” I don’t remember how I found this site–I might have heard it mentioned on TechTV’s The Screen Savers or maybe it got linked on Fark.com; either way, the cast of this Australian-based show were talking about movies and television, so I was hooked. The group had great chemistry and chatted about everything from Godzilla to Being John Malkovich. And even when the topic was about a movie or show I was unfamiliar with, they were entertaining enough to keep me listening. Also, this was before iTunes, so this little “internet radio show” was, for me, the trailblazer that set the bar for entertainment podcasts that came after it.

this WEEK in TECH http://twit.tv/twit …speaking of TechTV… TWiT is another show I’ve followed for a long time (remember when they originally wanted to call it Revenge of The Screen Savers?). As a fan of TechTV, I was sad to see it go away but followed what its personalities were doing on the web. What I love about TWiT is how Leo Laporte and crew can talk about the latest gadgets, computer innovations, and tech topics without making me feel like the subjects are over my head. Oh G4, what you threw away.

The Adam Carolla Podcast http://www.adamcarolla.com This show is the one I listen to on my morning train commute. A little drive-time radio, if you will. Ex-1UPper/former Rebel FM member Nick Suttner talked about this show so much on his Twitter, I had to see what was up. When I first started listening I would pick and choose the shows based on the guest, but soon figured out that it didn’t matter; Carolla in front of a microphone was engaging enough regardless of who’s sitting in with him. The show can be crass, but it’s definitely smart and funny. Also, his theme features a guy rockin’ out on a sitar. C’MON!

As we said last week, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments.  List your top 3 and see what others think of your picks.
