As you probably know by now, Amazon announced their Kindle DX which is basically a Kindle 2 with a larger 9.7 inch screen. It is being positioned as a textbook and newspaper device. Ryan and Peter seem to feel like it is in a weird place release and product wise and doesn’t sell itself to students too well with its rather hefty $489 price point. It may be better suited to a subsidized newspaper market though.
There have been rumors flying around about a new motion-controlled interface for the Xbox 360 that uses a motion bar. While it is understandable that Microsoft would want to get into this market after seeing the success of the Wii, it just doesn’t seem like a great idea. We have to echo the guys’ sentiments that it smacks of being gimmicky and an add-on peripheral is not the same as being standard with the console.
It wouldn’t be a gdgt weekly episode without some mention of Apple so there is some discussion about the recent news of the Blackberry outselling the iPhone in Q1 and what Apple could/should do to combat this with WWDC just a month away.
Nothing like a Kindle announcement to kick up some dust on an otherwise slow week, and the new 9.7-inch DX was no exception. Also on deck: Microsoft’s possible new motion controls, RIM’s BlackBerry Curve overtakes the iPhone 3G in sales, and a little on streaming home audio.
