TWiT 197: Steal This Diploma

by Jonathan Downin in Tech971 days ago

We get a great group on TWiT this week with only 1 familiar voice in Gina Trapani.  The first issue up the week is the direction journalism is taking and how online media is transforming what the business of news actually is at this point.  The discussion is largely based around the idea of the real-time web and how that allows users to triangulate their own new and sources for that news. Next up is some talk about the dichotomy between Microsoft’s new search called Bing and the new Google Wave.  The group makes a good point that these...

by Jonathan Downin in Games971 days ago

Okay, E3 kicks off tomorrow with the Microsoft press conference and there is going to be a lot of coverage going on, so we thought it would be helpful to provide a central place where you can find a lot of the content.  Link dump below: E3 total coverage: 1UP (http://www.1up.com/do/pubs?did=65) GameSpot (http://e3.gamespot.com/) GameTrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/) Giant Bomb (http://www.giantbomb.com) IGN (http://e3.ign.com/) Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/e3-2009/) Live coverage: GameSpot (http://e3.gamespot.com/live.html?tag=content_nav;live) Rev3...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #321: Zune HD, CellFactor and Steve Wiebe

by Jonathan Downin in Games971 days ago

Major Nelson and e are talking a bit about E3 here, but since they are probably privy to a lot of information about forthcoming announcements, they don’t say to much.  We could surmise as much, but e does say that the follow-up to the NXE has been in development since before the NXE was launched.  Could we see something about it at E3? The first interview is about the Zune HD.  It is all the same information which we have heard before, but it is still worth a listen. Not much in the second interview unless you are interested in CellFactor,...

gdgt weekly 040 – 05.30.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech972 days ago

The Zune HD is dominating tech news in recent days and the gdgt guys have a lot to say about it.  Ryan had a chance to see it in person and according to him the screen is very crisp and the device itself makes the iPod Touch seem big in comparison.  The user interface is also said to be quite slick. With the Palm Pre launch just a week away there have been a lot of developments including Verizon comnig out and saying that they will have the Pre within 6 months.  As Ryan laments, that’s not a cool move on Verizon’s part.  Palm is...

Engadget Podcast 148 – 05.30.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech972 days ago

It’s been a relentless week for news in the tech world and without Nilay, Joshua and Paul start out by talking about the Zune HD.  Microsoft revealed the Zune HD in a very unofficial and strange way.  You would think that with such a potentially market affecting device that they would take the chance to play up the announcement in a big way, but maybe they accomplished exactly what they needed to. As the launch of the Pre quickly approaching the news surrounding the device is ramping up to a large extent.  The strangest of which is undoubtedly...

Invisible Walls – Episode 59

by Jonathan Downin in Games972 days ago

The Invisible Walls crew is back and talking Sony predictions with special guest Shane Bettenhausen in this final show before E3. A lot of the big games get touched upon including Assassin’s Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, DJ Hero, Tony Hawk Ride and many others.  From there the guys move onto talk about Sony and the general tone is that Sony really needs a price drop.  They make a good point in saying that Sony has “won” the past few E3 and it didn’t help them too much so it’s time to do something substantial. As far...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 122

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

Wow, 1 gaming outlet isn’t doing an insanely in-depth pre-E3 podcasts where everyone feels the need to share all of their predictions.  In fact, there isn’t much E3 talk here at all. There is not too much going here on this week’s show.  Check back on Sunday and we will have a full listing of E3 coverage from all of the big outlets including IGN. It’s Daemon Hatfield, Craig Harris, Mark Ryan, and Greg Miller this week. It’s go time people, and we’re off to E3. Somehow, amidst about 10,000 game announcements...

Listen UP: 05/29/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

There is a lot going on in this epic Listen UP, but be warned, Garnett is playing devil’s advocate a little too hard in the first half and Travis Moses almost renders some parts of the last half unintelligible. Starting out the conversation up front is more Infamous and Prototype talk.  Garnett still can’t stop sharing his opinion on the two games, but the buzz about Prototype is sounding quite positive indeed with even Brad sharing some good impressions. The guys are letting the predictions fly fast and loose ranging from Wii HD not...

Giant Bombcast 05-29-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

The Giant Bomb guys are doing their massive pre-E3 show and they cover the whole show and their schedules day by day. Starting with Microsoft, the big prediction is that there will be a Metal Gear Solid announcement at the show.  We all can assume it will be MGS 4, but the 360 just may get the new game being teased as well.  The Zune HD will surely get some time, but the magnitude of what going on with that is hard to know at this point. The guys don’t have much of an idea what will happen at the Nintendo conference.  They guess that Nintendo...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 004

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

With E3 mere days away at this point we are starting to get a lot of pre-E3 podcasts and now we get one from the Bitmob guys.  They are sticking to there formula of 5 guys, 5 topics, but all the topics are based around E3 in some way. More than anything this show is a reminiscing of E3 memories for the guys on the show.  Many crazy things have happened at E3 over the years and a few of those stories are let loose here. There are not too many real predictions here, but Dan hopes for a redesigned Xbox 360 and that seems to make a lot more sense...

A Life Well Wasted | B-Side: Why Game?

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

A Life Well Wasted is often pretty difficult to sum up well.  It is always more than a sum of its parts and that is again the case here, maybe even more than usual. This is a follow-up to episode 3 where Robert asked people at GDC why they game.  He solicited answers to the same question from whoever wanted to submit.  One especially difficult and heart-wrenching story comes from Joystiq’s Justin McElroy. It sounds like Robert may have secured some kind of funding for the show, but he is taking a month off, so this one will have to last...

Xbox 360 Fancast 118 — Pre-E3 Extravaganza: Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

The Zune HD news could be fairly big.  The guys speculate that the Xbox 360 video marketplace could just be rebranded as a way to tie the two together, but there have also been rumblings of XBLA going to the Zune.  This could promote an iPod App Store kind of environment for Zune and XBLA. The announcement of the follow-up GTAIV episode The Ballad of Gay Tony has cause quite a stir.  The title alone has caused a bit of an out-cry from the more closed-minded types and you have to give it Rockstar for always knowing how to get a response.  The...

Cast in the Crowd | Brainy Gamer Podcast

by Jonathan Downin in Features973 days ago

With the success of this feature 2 weeks ago, we decided to make it a bi-weekly piece.  In case you missed the first installment, the goal is to spotlight smaller podcasts that have something unique to offer which you may not have found on your own. The Brainy Gamer Podcast is hosted by Michael Abbott (@brainygamer) who is a professor of theater and film studies at Wabash College, fitting, isn’t it?  Rather than taking a traditional approach, the Brainy Gamer Podcast does something that we have heard many argue should be done when talking...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 93

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

Sony has announced the newest set of titles to be added to the greatest hits line-up.  The game included are: Army of Two, Battlefield: Bad Company, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. After a fan-submitted naming process, the crew over at Q-Games have decided upon the name PixelJunk: Shooter.  While somewhat generic and smacking of being largely decided in a PR-centric way, the PixelJunk series has proven to be unique and fun so the name can...

The Geekbox RAW EDITION: Episode 17

by Jonathan Downin in Games974 days ago

The Terminator movie is the topic at the beginning here and the opinions are all over.  One thing is absolutely irrefutable though, T2 was and is completely awesome. Andrew Fitch is talking about his recent “romantic” adventures and it is entertaining as always.  Get ready for some stories about dates to vistas, being told he is not a very good dresser and a girl who is too intellectual to go play mini-golf. There may be no podcast next week due to E3, but Ryan relays that he is going to try and make that work. Wherein we discuss the...
