Engadget Podcast 142 – 04.18.2009: 5th birthday edition

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1014 days ago

This is a 100% nostalgia infused show.  Original founder of Engadget, Peter Rojas, is in with Ryan Block, who was also there in the very early days, on this week’s episode and they are talking about the genesis of the site. There is no actual gadget talk this week, but it is a rare chance to hear a lot about the history of Engadget and how these big sites start. We don’t really get too reflective here at Engadget — usually we’re too busy getting news up to think much about ourselves. Still, when you hit your 5th birthday,...

Windows Weekly 103: A New Kind of Death

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1015 days ago

As weeks go by it is hard to imagine what new there would be to talk about in the world of Windows, but there are also some new facets of things to think/talk about. It is hard to hear, but even the Windows man himself, Paul Thurrott, says that Windows 7 is not that far off from Vista.  So many have been viewing Windows 7 as the rejuvenation of Windows, but when one of the most in-the-know people of Windows world says something like this it can’t be anything but a little disheartening.  Maybe it’s time for a revolution, where is it? The...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 116

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

The Scoop! guys are enjoying a nice skull of vodka on this episode after Greg was blessed with it by Dan Akroyd’s handler.  Also, they just came back from watching Crank 2 so things are a little out of hand. NPDs are one of the only big gaming topics touched upon here and the Halo Wars sales are surprisingly high and the GTA: Chinatown Wars sales are sadly low.  It seems that a series name can only work in certain circumstances.  It is too bad because GTA for DS is a great game. The guys do make a good gaming point about the DS being overlooked...

Invisible Walls – Episode 53

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

The Invisible Walls crew starts out talking about BioShock 2 since they had the first gameplay footage exclusive on GameTrailers last week.  Apparently they have seen more than they can talk about so next week’s podcast should reveal a lot more. Konami and had an event this week and they were showing Six Days in Fallujah, Saw and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.  All 3 of these games are western developed which should be no surprise to those following Japanese game development recently.  The new Silent Hill is a re-imagining of the first...

Rebel FM Episode 14

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

After a week’s absence the Rebel FM guys are back and have a lot to talk about. Sad story of the good guys getting punished for being more than generous this week.  Stardock released Demigod and was inundated by pirated copies bringing down their servers causing reviews to be delayed.  Brad Wardell, Stardock’s president and CEO, never puts DRM on their games and was rewarded with over 100,000 copies being pirated upon release. It must be a slow time for game releases as Fallout 3 has been coming up again more recently.  Tyler is on...

Listen UP: 04/17/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

Get ready for a lengthy Listen Up this week.  There is some edginess going on at the beginning here, but it all in good fun. Killzone 2 is back in the conversation since the guys have been playing it.  The impressions are not all positive and the NPD aren’t very positive for the game either. Patrick is talking about Fallout 3: The Pitt expansion and it doesn’t exactly sound like a winner.  He does say that there are some incredible weapons to be had. As mentioned before, the NPDs are out and there is a lot of interpreting going on. ...

Joystiq Podcast 093 – Norbert edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

Justin is feeling pretty good about his feat of getting the E74 error enough notoriety to have Microsoft include this case in their 3-year warranty.  In all seriousness, good on you Justin, this will affect many people in a positive way. As happens quite often, Chris received a gaming chachki from EA last week, but not quite so normal is what it was.  Imagine Chris’ surprise when he opened the package and found an illegal weapon in the form of brass knuckles.  Needless to say he soon got a call from EA asking him to send it back. The guys...

Tekzilla | Episode 84

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1016 days ago

Kevin Rose from Diggnation is standing in for Patrick this week and it makes for a pretty fun episode. Kevin is talking a bit about Twitter clients and it demoing Seesmic Desktop as Veronica vouches for TweetDeck.  The next big one coming soon is Tweetie for Mac which is from the same guy that brought us Tweetie for iPhone and it looks pretty amazing.  Look for that to be available on Monday. There are a few other questions answered about hard drive partitioning, flash video encoding and YouTube as well as video up-scalers. Kevin Rose steps in...

The Geekbox: Episode 12

by Jonathan Downin in Games1016 days ago

The Geekbox is quickly becoming a TV podcast.  Lost takes up the first 20 minutes of the cast.  From here the group moves into some more general TV discussion. There is a little Pokemon talk in the games section, but that is all. There are more, 7 to be exact, Lost theories this week and they are all pretty ridiculous. No “Fitch-hitch” this week.  Maybe our patience will be rewarded with an extra long one next week. Wherein we discuss Street Fighter tournaments, TV sweeps periods, Lost 5×12 (spoiler warning!), the series premiere...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 87

by Jonathan Downin in Games1016 days ago

The is a survey related to the God of War III collector’s edition currently going on at the official PlayStation site regarding what you would like to see included.  One of the options is including the first two titles on the Blu-ray with GoW III.  Go over to the site, right now, and vote that thing up! There is an interview with Capcom regarding Monster Hunter and that PR is one of the best in the business.  Great interview; give it a listen and see if you don’t want to try the game afterward. The guys speculate on PSP2 and say that...

gdgt weekly 034 – 04.16.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1016 days ago

Rumors of a Zune HD are running rampant and Peter and Ryan have a few thing to say about it.  It just doesn’t seem possible that Microsoft could have an iPod touch level competitor ready at this point. The Xbox 360 E74 issue crops up hear with the news that Microsoft will cover the issue as they do the 3 red rings issue.  Good on Microsoft for doing this, but how did they mess up the design of the 360 this horribly? News of Dell releasing a smart phone in China seems unlikely.  As Ryan continues to say, Dell just does not seem to focus...

E74 Podcast, Episode 111

by Jonathan Downin in Games1017 days ago

In “celebration” of the E74 issue the Three Red Lights crew has renamed their podcast to E74.  We will see if the name sticks, but that new podcast art looks amazing! (yes, you caught us, we made it.) Six Days in Fallujah gets some time here and we get some actual game impressions in addition to discussion on the issues involved.  Apparently the graphics are pretty dated with the destructibility of the environment looking especially suspect. There is an absolutely epic conversation about 80s and 90s sitcom spin-offs, character replacements...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 131

by Jonathan Downin in Games1018 days ago

You probably haven’t heard much about it, but the guys are talking about The Hunter this week.  It is free and is a first person deer hunting game that is actually very compelling.  Don’t let the fact that it is a hunting game deter you, it sounds like it really breaks out of the genre providing a fresh experience.  Oh, and it is gorgeous. Chronicles of Riddick gets some time here and it safe to say that it comes off pretty well.  If a 7 hour single session play of the game doesn’t vouch for the quality what does? The guys...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 43

by Jonathan Downin in Games1018 days ago

Assassin’s Creed 2 is the talk at the beginning of this one and the guys have some fun speculating about what it will be.  The fact that it is based in Venice is definitely cool and with the improvements there should be over the first one this could be pretty amazing. It sounds like the news of Will Wright leaving EA may not have been as much of a shock to these guys as it was to everyone else.  It is exciting to think that he will have the chance to develop his ideas without the responsibility of making a hugely popular game.  Will surely...

Diggnation | Episode 198 – Video Games or Sex?

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1018 days ago

Kevin is talking about the new DiggBar at the beginning here and he is obviously very positive on it.  He does provide some good clarifications, but he seems to be downplaying the large amount of criticism towards it.  Many sites have disabled the bar on their sites, but this Diggnation may have been recorded before this happened. The Hulu/Boxee story comes up here again.  It is still no more understandable why the studios wouldn’t want Hulu viewable in as many ways as possible. Games or sex?  Oh the age old question.  More men choose...
