gdgt weekly 035 – 04.23.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1009 days ago

Ugobe, and subsequently, the Pleo are gone.  For those who are unaware Ugobe’s Pleo was a robotic dinosaur that was pretty organic in its motion and obviously a bit ahead of its time when it was released in 2007.  This leads into a discussion on robots and robotics in general. The new 3G Sidekick LX has been announced and will be widely available on May 13th.  I looks to be a great upgrade for the Sidekick with an impressive 3.2 inch, full VGA screen. Windows 7 gets some bleak talk about the limitations placed on the lower end versions. ...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 132

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

DemiGod gets a lot of time on this week’s cast and for good reason. The game sounds very solid, but due to some piracy and early release issues, thanks to Gamestop, the multiplayer is suffering. Game endings is the topic of the week and there are some interesting points brought up.  Halo, Shadow of the Collosus, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid and Fallout 3 are all brought up within the discussion.  How do you feel about the topic?  Are you unhappy with game endings? The iPhone/iPod Touch discussions really heats up with a listener question...

Diggnation | Episode 199 – Samovar Teas!

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Tech1011 days ago

The guys are at a tea bar this week and for those of you not living in California, yes, these do exist.  They are trying a few teas and Alex isn’t digging them all. As usual, there are plenty of crazy stories this week.  The Man Paid $2500 To Impregnate Neighbors Wife story is nearly unbelievable.  Do these kinds of things really happen?  I guess most shows on CMT prove that they do, even in the states. The Worst Homemade Star Wars Costumes is hilarious.  There are so many people failing miserably in their fandom.  We know how it goes...

MacBreak Weekly: 137 iScratch

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1011 days ago

The Apple App Store is about to hit a billion downloads and they are offering a great package of prizes for whoever lands that milestone download.  If you are interested in winning over $10,000 worth of Apple stuff keep a keen eye on the Apple front page in when it gets close start downloading like crazy. Apple has new commercials out firing back at Microsoft after their recent Mac-targeted ads.  They are all pretty good, but the formula may be wearing a little thin. Tweetie for Mac is out and it is one of the best Twitter clients out there. ...

Giant Bombcast 04-21-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

Jeff is on his way back from an event that took place in London this week so he is not here for this one.  With him gone there is some absolutely ridiculous discussion going on.  Could 20 bears kill a T-rex?  How many great white sharks would there have to be to take down a T-rex?  These are just a taste. Vinny and Brad have been playing through the new Riddick game and are liking it quite a bit.  Brad says to definitely play through the Butcher Bay portion before hitting the Dark Athena content.  They are still playing Resident Evil 5 as...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 44

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

This is Charles Onyett’s last podcast.  He is moving to the Xbox team so he may be appearing on the Three Red Lights podcast. The guys are talking about the recent announcement of Fallout: New Vegas.  This is not a sequel of to Fallout 3, but it takes place during the same time period so it is more of a side-story.  It is being made by Obsidian Entertainment which is comprised of some of the original Fallout team. Valve has released a free downloadable content pack for Left 4 Dead.  It makes the two maps that were not available in verses...

at1UP: 04/21/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

It is the 20th anniversary of the GameBoy’s release in Japan and the at1UP crew is reminiscing about there portable gaming pasts. The recent Bluray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children came out last week in Japan and it contains a demo of Final Fantasy XIII for PS3.  1UP got a copy and did a video playthrough of it and the group here shares their impressions.  It looks beautiful, but there are still some reservations about the battle system. In the final segment Mike Cruz is talking about the new Discovery show Pitchmen which features...

The HotSpot 04/21/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

Tor Thorsen is on this week’s HotSpot and he is in classic Tor form.  One word: intense. The NPD get some more coverage here with the guys lamenting the poor performance of GTA: Chinatown Wars for DS.  DS games tend to have a different sales path in that they tend to do well over a longer timeline than their console counterparts so there may be hope yet. There is an interview with the original creator/writer, Al Lowe, of the Leisure Suit Larry games wherein he discusses the lack of humor in many years.  It is sad that humor has become something...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 109 – Uber Gubious

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies1011 days ago

The movies being covered this week are State of Play and Crank 2.  The latter sounds every bit as crazy as the original Crank, but maybe a little too crazy. Demigod is the game of the week and in this age of having a tutorial for every little thing in every game it weirdly has none.  Some may rejoice to this fact, but the problem is that if you don’t know ho to play it, and have not help, you won’t be able to find the fun. We also get a TV segment this week with two new shows being discussed, Southland and The Unusuals.  They both...

CO-OP | Episode 107 – Mother Mission’s Fruits

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

Grand Theft Auto is the first game in the show this week and there are a lot of good things being said about it.  The art style that Rockstar chose for the game suits the DS perfectly and makes a whole lot of gameplay situations possible.  It would have been an easy cash-in, but they really went that extra mile. You know that the iPhone has become a legitamate gaming platform once it takes up a whole segment on CO-OP.  It really is an exciting platform and a lot of gaming value eith games that are almost underpriced. The new Riddick game has...

Xbox 360 Fancast 113 – General Podcast Failure

by Jonathan Downin in Games1012 days ago

No Xav again this week.  That guy needs to learn to prioritize.  Who needs higher education anyway– The Joystiq Xbox crew had a Halo 3 tournament with Bungie and apparently Bungie was not playing fair.  They rigged the maps so that in capture the flag, both maps were right next to each other within Bungie’s base.  It sounds like Dustin is not too happy and is planning his revenge at this very moment (depending on when you are reading this it may not be this very moment). As has been heavily covered the E74 error has been included...

Good Grief: 04/20/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1012 days ago

The podcast starts out this week on a discussion on journalism and the recent experimentation going on with the 1UP news style.  They have recently started serving out their news with a little bit more commentary attached in the vein of Joystiq or Kotaku.  There are some interesting points made, but Sharkey doesn’t want to talk about it at all. Good Grief has been great about keeping the focus of the show largely on the community.    Whether it is reading user blogs, reading comments or playing games with readers/listeners they are obviously...

TWiT 191: Corked

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1012 days ago

Twitter has been picking up steam at a pretty insane rate in recent weeks.  With the Ashton Kutcher/CNN situation and now Oprah joining twitter there is a backlash brewing from many tech enthusiasts. The Susan Boyle video has taken the internet by storm and the guys here don’t think it’s kosher.  Dvorak is especially convinced that the whole performance was architected.  It has come out that she has released a CD before.  She is an amazing singer regardless. It is an absolute Twitter explosion on the Show and Dvorak is having none...

Player One Podcast | Episode 130 – Insane Clown College

by Jonathan Downin in Games1012 days ago

The guys are talking about the new Amazon storefront which offers offer XBLA purchases.  Once your purchase something there they will immediately send you a download code of  your purchase.  This nice thing about this allows you to gift games. Patapon 2 is touched upon here and it is interesting the it is being sold in physical stores, but it is just the box with a download code inside.  The guys here speculate that this is being done because the box and manuals were already printed.  Highly possible. Outrun Online Arcade is now on XBLA and...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #316 : Lode Runner and photo editing laptops

by Jonathan Downin in Games1013 days ago

The first half of the show is dedicated to new Windows notebooks that have been focused in their hardware design to cater towards photographers.  Although a dual-screen and color self-calibrating notebook sounds good, it sounds like the point is being missed in trying solve a mostly software issue with hardware. Lode Runner is finally coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the Major is talking to Brett Ballow about its development and release this Wednesday.  Nostalgia will make this a must-buy for many. The NPDs came out and the guys are quick to point...
