The first installment of Podcaster’s Favorite Podcasts was a big hit last week and this week we have another one for you. If you missed it, in this feature we ask a podcaster/podcasters to list 3 of their top favorite podcasts and talk a little about why they like them.
This week we have Shawn Andrich from Gamers with Jobs. We have been covering Gamers with Jobs here on CastMedium for a few months now and it has proven to be one of the most thoughtful gaming podcasts out there. While they do a typical “what you’ve been playing segment” at the beginning of every show, they tend to play smaller or more obscure titles along with the bigger releases which helps all of us broaden our gaming horizons. They also have a very focused topical section every week where they discuss issues that are more analytical or issue based. Gamers with Jobs is unique in that they promote taking not just gaming, but games as a medium, seriously.
If you are looking for a gaming podcast that is smart, topical and yet still very connected to the current happenings of the gaming industry, Gamers with Jobs has your number. Enjoy this week’s picks with Shawn Andrich.

Retronauts - Retronauts was not a podcast I expected to enjoy when I stumbled upon it. While I grew up playing video games, I didn’t really get serious about them until I was a teenager. Lucky for me, as my 10 year old self was running his fingers along the rows of SNES games for rent and deciding what to buy based on the how awesome the cover was, Jeremy Parish was really thinking about this stuff. Thanks to Retronauts I’ve learned to appreciate the games of old as more than primitive forebearers of the new and important titles of the current day. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve played every game that came out for the early consoles, the passion and knowledge Jeremy and his crew share in each show makes it well worth listening to.
Downloadable Content, The Penny Arcade Podcast - I should probably be up front and say that in some small way, I’ve grown into adulthood alongside Mike and Jerry. I’ve been reading their comics and following them around the Internet since they began on loonygames over a decade ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that listening to a recording of them working on their comic was even more entertaining than the comics themselves. These two have a unique chemistry and riff off each other really well. Now that they’ve grown accustomed to recording conversations, they’re a lot more aware of their audience and the podcast is better for it. Highly recommended.
Idle Thumbs - A mix of writers, developers and community coordinators, Idle Thumbs brings in a lot of great perspectives on the gaming industry while remaining firmly grounded as gamers first and foremost. They clearly enjoy each other’s company and the post-show edits mixing in game music, bloopers and other treats keeps it lively and fun all the way through. If you can have a bit of patience for some in-jokes that may fly over your head, you’ll find a lot to love here.
We forgot to mention it last week, but jump in the comments and let us and Shawn know what you think of his picks. And while your at it, why not let us know yours?
