Engadget Podcast 136 – 03.06.2009: Who nerds the Nerdmen?

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1057 days ago

This is exciting news!  Joshua Topolsky is going to be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  The era of the geek becoming cool is upon us– or our mystique is just about to be outed as non-existent.  We’ll see which way the pendulum swings on Monday.  Joshua promises he’ll have something cool to show on the program. More talk about the Eee Keyboard.  As weird as it is, along with Ryan Block from yesterday’s gdgt weekly, these guys are really up on it.  The novelty factor must be at just the right level for this to be something...

Three Red Lights, Episode 106

by Jonathan Downin in Games1058 days ago

Three Red Lights has returned after a month away.  And the award for the most inconsistent podcast goes too– Breaking news here.  The TRL guys have received the exclusive on the release of the Dreamcast 2.  It it will be coming out on 9/9/09 with the launch title of The Beatles: Rock Band and the console will be shaped like a guitar.  Nate Ahearn deciphered this information out of Peter Moore saying “hello” to him in the EA offices.  Umm, yeah. Some excitement here over the forthcoming Three Red Lights developed Bedazzler...

Tekzilla | Episode 78

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1058 days ago

Up front we get some information about how to get a surround sound setup working without going with the digital output.  There seem to be some solutions, but it really comes down to shelling out for an audio receiver. Patrick and Veronica also touch on DVRs and how to record TV without having to pay for a monthly payment box.  There are many ways to go about this if you have a computer that you are willing to dedicate to the task.  One of the best solutions being the Elgato eyetv for Mac. DVRs Without Subscriptions Fees, Dump That VCR! When To...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 82

by Jonathan Downin in Games1058 days ago

The Beyonders are on a mission to conceptualize their new Podcast Beyond fighting game.  Let’s just say it involves Abraham Lincoln, a mage, The Watchmen characters, Nate Ahearn, the Slumdog Millionaire kids and Barack Obama. Ryan Clements was trying to get a platinum trophy out of Mirror’s Edge and couldn’t get it done.  The game makes it nearly impossible to get platinum seeing as you have to perfect every single level to get the time trial requirements.  Xbox 360 achievements and PS3 trophies should be attainable without...

gdgt weekly 028 – 03.05.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1058 days ago

The guys start out by talking about the Touch Book on this one.  Coming out of a company that no one has every heard of, Always Innovating, it looks to offer intriguing function and form factor.  Don’t expect this to be anything other than something bigger companies iterate upon if at all successful. After skipping over the rather uninteresting Apple updates the topic moves onto the new Kindle iPhone app and the bigger discussion of Hearst’s interest in producing an e-reader exclusively for their publications.  Although these big...

Rebel FM – Episode 9 – 03/04/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1058 days ago

This week is pretty toned down compared to last week. These guys really love their game music.  Anthony and Phil went to a Video Games Live concert and that leads into a good hour long discussion on music in games.  They cover everything from classic game music to modern game design that incorporates musical elements. Patrick Klepek is talking about his experience working at the MTV Multiplayer blog and the circumstances that led up to him being laid off in the last segment.  This leads into a discussion about blog aggregator sites such as Joystiq...

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 39

by Jonathan Downin in Games1059 days ago

The review for Sonic & the Black Knight is out and– it sucks, big time.  Can a good Sonic game ever be made again? Punch Out has been confirmed for a May 18th release.  The graphics look really great and it works with the classic controller so have no fear of mad waggling. It sounds like the EA Sports games coming for Wii are going to be pretty good and a nice step up from their rudimentary Wii Sports counterparts.  It seems EA is taking their Wii stuff in the right direction, but Wii Sports Resort may make things a little more difficult...

Diggnation | Episode 192 – Cube Dolls

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1059 days ago

Kevin and Alex are going to be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon next Wednesday, March 11th.  For all of us who have been watching Diggnation it’s going to be really fun to see them on national TV.  Expect Alex to cause some havoc. The guys talk about Safari 4 and Kevin loves it– until it stops working.  Funny how things work like that sometimes. Quicken Online Can’t Believe Mint’s Growth, Tales Of Horror From The Circuit City Liquidation, Kevin and Alex scheduled for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Microsoft To Start Shipping...

at1UP: 03/03/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1059 days ago

at1UP is back this week with its second episode and the group is talking about Wrestling and geeking out on this year’s Wondercon.  Hearing people being really into wrestling is something that most will never understand, but we’re not geek elitists. What at1UP will eventually morph into is hard to know, but at the moment it seems to be lacking a focus.  The topics are all over and games are just a part of the discussion.  It seems more like a celebration of geek topics.  The Geekbox was a bit like this before finding it’s stride,...

No Geekbox this week, please help

by Jonathan Downin in Games1059 days ago

As some of you may have heard, The Geekbox’s Ryan Higgins, was hit with tragedy last week.  Although he and his loved ones are safe, his apartment burnt down a few days ago.  In addition to having no permanent place to live for the time being, he and his girlfriend have lost close to all of their belonging in the fire. So, obviously, there will be no podcast this week (and probably next).  Head on over to thegeekbox.net and make a donation via PayPal.  Ryan Scott has said that all donations will be passed on to Ryan Higgins in an effort...

MacBreak Weekly 130: I Did A Fiduciary Dooty

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1060 days ago

The announcements of new Apple products that happened yesterday morning is the main topic of discussion in this week’s episode.  3 of Apple’s main product lines were updated, but the results were not exactly amazing. The conclusions are: The Mac mini update was long needed, but the price is still too high; the iMac upgrades were ok and the reduction of the low end 24″ model is a welcome change; and the Mac Pro refresh is more confusing than anything. It’s not talked about on the show here, but there are rumors of an Apple...

What They Play 11: The one with all the gateway games

by Jonathan Downin in Games1060 days ago

Tom brings up an interesting anecdote up front on this one.  He tells how playing RTS games was one of the first type of game captured his young son’s interest.  His point is that there is action, but it is somewhat removed so it is exciting, but not scary. There is a discussion in the middle section between John and Tom responding to a letter about critical reception to games as apposed to movies.  This raises the topic of liking games that have not reviewed well and the acceptability of this by gamers and non-gamers.  Are there any games...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 125

by Jonathan Downin in Games1060 days ago

The conversation starts on board games and moves on to Killzone 2.  From there we get some discussion on Zen Bound.  If you haven’t heard of this game it is an iPhone game that utilizes the platform in such a great way that it really couldn’t be done on anything else. Sins of a Solar Empire takes center stage in the second part here with Blair Fraser talking about the development of the recently released expansion pack.  Stardock, the developer of the original game, really hit a niche with the game.  It’s a very intense, high-quality...

Giant Bombcast 03-03-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1060 days ago

The boys are serious about their Street Fighter and they spend the first 20 minutes talking about.  They make a good point about how being able to see what character your oponent is chosing in multiplayer can cause some frustrating matches. Midway is in some serious trouble and with Jeff being an especially big fan of Mortal Kombat, there is some good talk about this.  The prospect of Mortal Kombat being sold seems unlikely at this point according to a source that has been in contact with Jeff.  The idea posed here of a Japanese developed MK...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 38

by Jonathan Downin in Games1060 days ago

Empire: Total War is the big game this week.  Steve Butts reviewed it for IGN and gave it one of the highest rating that the IGN PC team has given out in recent memory, a 9.5.  This is higher than the 9.0 they gave Dawn of War II, which was hyped up as one of the biggest recent PC releases and has even gone on to outsell the WOW Lich King expansion this week. Tom Clancy’s EndWar, which released on consoles late last year, is coming out soon and Jason isn’t exactly loving it.  The game seem to be suffering a common case of consolitis...
