The HotSpot 03/10/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1054 days ago

David Sirlin is an amazing guest.  He is the man responsible for balancing Super Street Fighter II: Turbo HD Remix.  He has a lot to say and obviously knows his stuff very well.  Before he gets deep into Street Fighter stuff he talks a bit about evoking different kinds of emotions from players through gameplay.  It’s a great topic and some more designers should think about instead of using their stories as a crutch. It just gets a minor mention here, but everyone should check out a free flash game on Kongregate called Don’t Look...

Xbox 360 Fancast 107 – Sad Robot

by Jonathan Downin in Games1054 days ago

Mirror’s Edge and Far Cry 2 get a few comments from Richard as he finished them both recently.  Both of these great games got passed over late last year so if you are looking for something to play and haven’t given these a chance, now is the time. There is a rumor that the Xbox Elite is going to be fased out of retail.  Apparently the Elite is not selling too well and taking up too much shelf space so is not seen as being necessary in the core line-up.  It will be reserved for special edition bundles like the recent Resident Evil...

CO-OP | Episode 101 – Introducing the Band – Killzone 2 & Noby Noby Boy

by Jonathan Downin in Games1054 days ago

And the official first episode of the first season of CO-OP lands on Revision 3. The first game discussed is Noby Noby Boy.  There is a lot of nuance in the game and the “toy” aspect is played up a lot here.  A good point is made about how when we were young we didn’t need objectives to enjoy our toys, so why do we now?  It’s the context from which this toy is offered that makes people expect goals. Killzone 2 is covered in the second segment and the guys like it, but have a fair amount of problems with it as well.  It...

Good Grief: 03/09/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1054 days ago

The group played Killzone 2 for this week’s episode.  They keep saying that they had fun and liked it, but the overall impression you get after hearing them talk about it is less the great. Sharkey’s “Recession Gaming” segment is a nice part of the podcast.  He is talking about Team Fortress 2D this week and everyone seems to like it quite a bit.  He even goes so far as to call it better than Team Fortress 2 for those that want a less intensive experience. In another feature, Armchair Design, the topic of ideas for Portal...

Project Lore Episode 16.1: Gundrak

by Jonathan Downin in Games1054 days ago

Another week, another raid.  Jeff Cannata is now a permanent member of the Project Lore team, or so it seems with his addition to the new opening sequence.  This is one of the cooler opening sequences around and it’s nice to see Jeff in there now as well. Everyone has hit level 80 and they are heading into their first heroic instance.  Things go a little less than smoothly with the crew not being able to take down the first boss in this first episode. Jeff has been getting hammered for his lack of skill and makes a point to say up front...

CO-OP now a part of Revision3!

by Jonathan Downin in Games, News1054 days ago

For those of you that watched last week’s CO-OP you will remember that the guys were teasing that they had signed a new contract of sorts.  Well, it turns out that it was with Revision3.  Revision3 are the people that produce many of the video shows featured here on the site including: The Totally Rad Show, Diggnation and Tekzilla.  You can see they get a shout-out on another Revision3 show, The Digg Reel.  This is huge news indeed. If you have been following 1UP for the past year you know that Jeff Cannata, of The Totally Rad Show, has...

Player One Podcast | Episode 124 – Horshack Test

by Jonathan Downin in Games1055 days ago

No Greg Ford on this week’s episode.  This one starts out with a big discussion on Street Fighter.  There is a story about traveling across state lines to buy an arcade stick.  Has anyone else made a long trip to pick up something gaming related? It’s nice that the these guys don’t shy away from talking about old or more casual games.  What other podcast is still really talking about Bomberman Live? Sony currently has a download available on the Japanese PSN store called AdHoc Party App.  It allows you to play local adhoc...

TWiT 185: Craig’s Lust

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1055 days ago

Twitter is the biggest topic yet again this week.  There is a 20 minute discussion at the beginning here.  I get it, it’s a lot, but why do people hate it so much when Twitter gets so much coverage on TWiT?  It’s a big deal and is afforded the ammount of time that any others topic would garner in it’s position.  If you haven’t joined the revolution it is high time. Facebook is launching a redesign of their homepage and profile views next week.  It looks to provide more category based navigation and live-view of your...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #311 : The Mini Unscheduled Show

by Jonathan Downin in Games1055 days ago

The Maj has been traveling so this week’s show is a short one.  The guys touch on a few things and then move onto Microsoft’s latest XBLA inniciative called “Days of Arcade.”  MS did something like this last summer, but contrary to what they say, that one yeilded some bigger games than this one will. That’s it.  Nothing to interesting or exciting. Not a normal show…e and I got together for a quick catch up. This show has none of the normal show features. We’ll be back to a regular show next week. Runtime –...

Podtoid 89: We told you so

by Jonathan Downin in Games1055 days ago

Another new addition to the site here.  Podtoid is put out by Destructoid, a gaming community, game reviews and news blog of sorts, but not quite in the Joystiq or Kotaku sort of way.  They focus less on up to the minute news and focus more on entertaining or insightful articles.  The community is very passionate so check it out and you may find yourself at home.  The podcast is headed up by Aaron Linde and Anthony Burch. There is a huge rant on Japanese role playing games right at the beginning here.  This seems to be a common sentiment among...

Invisible Walls – Episode 47

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

Marcus throws out a crazy prediction up front here about Mass Effect 2 possibly being an MMO.  This just doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.  Everyone who liked Mass Effect surely liked it for its great single player story and if that is missing in the second one would there really still be that huge built-in audience? For those of you who have been hearing a lot about the 50 Cent game and scratching your head about it, the guys talk about it here and we get a good look at it.  Marcus lives up to his “grumpy” moniker...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 112

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

In this episode Gina Grad who voices Rose in Street Fighter IV comes on to talk a bit about the game, but more importantly she joins in on Greg Miller’s dating segment.  Gina doesn’t quite fall in line with Greg’s advice, but a more coherent and sane point of view might be good– or not. There is a great debate about the merits of DS vs. PSP near the end.  Greg and Daemon both make some valid points about the availability of “mature” titles on each platform.  Moth people seem to want to like the PSP, but there...

Windows Weekly 97: Kumo As In Sumo

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1057 days ago

The idea of the Zune being used as a software platform for set-top boxes is somewhat perplexing.  The Zune experience in a small form factor is great, but blow that up to a huge TV display and maybe not so much.  With Apple somewhat struggling with the Apple TV is it really the time for Microsoft to go for it’s 4th foray into the living room? The guys are also talking about Microsoft’s new search endeavor codenamed Kumo.  It seems futile with Google so completely dominant, but Leo makes a good point that each percentage of the search...

Listen UP: 03/06/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

Garnett is talking about H.A.W.X. and making it sound better than any other impressions around.  It doesn’t seem like it going to be for anyone who isn’t really into flight combat games, but it may be the next game for people that have been waiting for the now stagnant genre to have a good new title. The Ghostbuster game sounds surprisingly amazing.  It’s not a game that has been touted as a AAA title, but it may just be a summer sleeper hit.  The graphics are great, it has all the right people involved and just sounds fun. ...

Joystiq Podcast 088 – Hermie Hopperhead edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

The downloadable Watchmen game is not fairing well.  Although very pretty, the gameplay seems to drain any enjoyment out what could be a decent beat-em-up experience.  As many have said, skip it and download Streets of Rage 2, you will have a better time. Even more love for the 50 Cent game from these guys.  Exploding ramps and points for everything– sounds like a recipe for awesomeness, just maybe not a full $60 worth of awesomeness. Veering away from the podcast for a second, what does everyone think of the Joystiq reviews?  They seem...
