The HotSpot 03/17/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1046 days ago

Justin Calvert is on the cast this week and he is in the process of reviewing GTA: Chinatown Wars so he has a lot to share about it.  The game sounds like a surprisingly full experience with depth that you wouldn’t expect for a game being developed for the DS.  The visuals are pretty slick as well. Team Ninja has an announcement planned for the 24th of this month at the Sony Metreon.  This leads many to believe it will be some sort of PS3 announcement.  The guys here predict either a new DOA Extreme or some other boob-related game to be...

CO-OP | Episode 102 – Selling Ourselves

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

Halo Wars is the first game on this one and the guys don’t have too much to add to what has already been said about it.  One things is for sure though, nobody can say it isn’t beautiful, especially with the HD version offered by the Area 5 guys. The second game covered this week is Resident Evil 5.  Right up front the control issue is covered and the opinions are positive all-round.  The hot-button issue of racism, which has surrounded the games release for over a year, is touched upon here and the guys make some good points.  The...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 104 – 2 Years

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

The big 2 year show is here and it is an ending and a new beginning.  This episode marks the last episode with super-editor/cameraman Steve Koncelik. In addition we get to see the top 5 backgrounds and intro as voted for by the fans.  This is one not to miss.  Things are changing from here so this is a special one. Such an awesome ending with the song Breath Me by Sia.  This was featured in the season finale of Six Feet Under and is put to good use here as well. We celebrate our second anniversary with an episode jam-packed with rad. Based on...

Player One Podcast | Episode 125 – All According to Keikaku

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

The guys touch on a little bit of everything this week and one this is unanymous, Peggle is fun.  Everybody loves Peggle, but the Xbox Live multiplayer gets a surprisingly luke-warm reception here.  Apparently playing Peggle is fun, watching people play Peggle– not so much. Street Fighter IV is still a big topic this week and the group brings up a funny point.  Has Mad Catz ever had the kind of demand that they have been getting for their SF sticks and gamepads?  It seems like they are pretty hard to find so they must have underestimated...

Xbox 360 Fancast 108 — Overclocked

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

If you have been listening to the X3Fancast for the past few weeks you know Xav has been having some troubles with his internet and thing are not any better this week.  Hope you like that garbled Skype sound. There is not much going on in this episode except for the interview with a couple guys from OC Remix that did the music for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.  They have an interesting origin story and it just goes to show how you can break into the games industry in many ways.  Their site has a lot of great game remixes and more are...

Good Grief: 03/16/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

Former 1UPer Philip Kollar from Rebel FM is on and he is answering a few questions from the 1UP boards.  The questions range from what exactly he would like to be doing within the industry to childhood digressions. There is a good discussion about the merits of Sonic actually being able to be done well in 3D and how the old-school 2D versions weren’t able to be as memorable as other classic games simply because of the speed of the gameplay.  This leads into a discussion of the revival of 2D games and what freedoms DLC and downloadable games...

TWiT 185: TWiTs in Space

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1048 days ago

In this weeks episode Leo talks to David Prager who not only had his house invaded by someone he doesn’t know, but instead of calling the police he Twittered and started a UStream to chronicle the situation.  Say what you will about the way he handled it, it is extremely interesting and a real sign of the web 2.0 era we are living in. Kevin Rose’s new website wefollow.com is talked about here.  If you haven’t taken a look at it, it is a central directory of Twitter accounts divided into relevant categories.  You can add yourself...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #312 : Resident Evil 5

by Jonathan Downin in Games1048 days ago

The Major has an interview with Chris Kramer from Capcom on this week’s episode.  We have a heard so much about Resident Evil 5 that having someone from Capcom on to give a somewhat corporate take on things really doesn’t offer much.  PR talk on an over discussed game is really necessary. One of the more fun games to come out in a little while is Peggle on Xbox Live Arcade.  The game is simple, yet addicting.  If you haven’t played it anywhere else, this is definitely the place to pick it up since it has cooperative play over...

Invisible Walls – Episode 48

by Jonathan Downin in Games1050 days ago

A lot of bad things are said on this one about Sonic & the Black Knight on this one, and deservedly so.  Whoever thought putting Sonic into a classic British tale was a good idea needs to be questioned– harshly. Resistance: Retribution looks amazing.  One of the best things about Invisible Walls is you get see footage of the games that the guys talk about and it is pretty surprising how good some games look on PSP.  Resistance looks even better than most PS2 games. It hasn’t been promoted as a really high profile game, but The...

The Geekbox: Episode 7

by Jonathan Downin in Games1050 days ago

The Geekbox is back and Ryan Higgins is sounding great considering what he has been through over the past 2 weeks. This is The Geekbox so of course Watchmen gets a good, long discussion.  Unlike many other casts not everyone loves it here though.  Send you complaints to Karen.  There are spoiler, so skip the first 20 minutes if you want to be spared of them. Lost gets plenty of time here too.  TV has quickly become the most covered part of this podcast. There is a bit of game talk here as well believe it or not and it’s all about Street...

Windows Weekly 98: We Get Letters

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1050 days ago

Leo and Paul start here with a little check-in on the state of Windows 7 as they tend to do every episode.  It sounds like the new leaks are actually quite a bit less stable than the initial beta that was released in January.  So if you are tempted to update from the beta, you might be best to just stick with what you have. Paul has a few things to say about browsers as has probably managed make even more Mac people who like Safari upset.  It seems like it really is somewhat of a mess under Windows though. Although invites are no longer available,...

gdgt weekly 029 – 03.13.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1050 days ago

The new iPod shuffle continues to not be the most loved device.  Ryan poses some things that he thinks are potential issues with the new iPod and the prime one being the lack of a standard for earphones.  Seeing as the new shuffle has no controls and relies solely on having earphones that do, that creates potential problems when it comes to having to buy an adapter when using your own. Blackberry App World and Windows Marketplace from RIM and Microsoft respectively are prime topics of discussion.  Applications for mobile devices and phones have...

Listen UP: 03/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1050 days ago

The game starting out this week’s episode is MadWorld.  This game has been almost unanimously loved by the gaming press and that continues here.  David Ellis has a lot to say about it and even has some insight into the games story and how it is actually smarter than many people my realize. Resident Evil 5 and the propossal that it is stuck in some sort of no-man’s land between action game and survival horror game is again brought up here.  Though they admit the ridiculousness of it themselves, a few of the guys say that even though...

Engadget Podcast 137 – 03.13.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1050 days ago

Joshua Topolsky was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday and got to handle the Palm Pre.  If you have been listening to the Engadget Podcast since CES you know he is pretty up on the device and he seems even more excited about it now.  It looks very good and Palm’s ability to get it out the door in a timely manner is the main issue at this point. Apple has announced an event for March 17th where they will cover a big update of the iPhone OS.  There is not much known about what will be included in the 3.0 update, but there are rumors...

Joystiq Podcast 089 – Gravity edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1050 days ago

Resident Evil 5 comes out today and Justin is talking about it here since he reviewed it earlier in the week.  He also put together a round-table review podcast for it that was released yesterday.  Anything and everything you need to know before buying it is covered so go give it a listen.  Sneak peek: they like it, but don’t love it. Many people loved the first Puzzle Quest, but it doesn’t sound like the follow-up, Galactrix, is going to go over quite as well.  The puzzle system is not quite as intuitive and some of the mechanics...
