With N’Gai Croal on this week Resident Evil 5 get a lot of talk time.  The initial discussion starts with a comparison between the mechanics of RE5 and Dead Space.  There is an interesting idea put forth that the difference between these two games is the difference between survival horror and thriller.  The controls for RE5 are also argued to be what makes the game successful by David Ellis. If you are at all interested in the racial issues surrounding Resident Evil 5 you can’t miss what N’Gai has to say.  Even if you are tired...

Engadget Podcast 138 – 03.20.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1043 days ago

It seems to be just the iTunes version, but there is a lot of popping going on Joshua’s audio in the middle of this one. The Dell adamo just can’t catch a break.  They guys have a lot of problems with Dell’s pretentious entry into the stylish thin notebook segment.  It’s expensive, underpowered and heavy when compared it’s main competition, the MacBook Air.  These are all problems that Ryan and Peter spoke to on yesterday’s gdgt weekly.  SSD as standard is nice though. iPhone OS 3.0 takes up the last 2/3 of...

Tekzilla | Episode 80

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1044 days ago

The new 3rd generation iPod Shuffle comes up at the beginning here and Patrick is not happy about it at all.  What is everyone’s’ thoughts on it? Ever had problems backing up or moving your iTunes music?  Patrick and Veronica have you covered and Veronica even mentions TuneUp, a program which finds missing album artwork, which you may have seen advertised here. Not much else on this one other than Patrick saying to always go with more RAM. Get the best OTA reception for DTV or HDTV, update all your social networking sites at once!...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 84

by Jonathan Downin in Games1044 days ago

The guys are talking a bit about Resistance: Retribution in the beginning here as Greg gave it a 9.2 in his recent review.  The game is very beautiful and controls very well considering it i a 3rd person shooter without dual-analog sticks.  Some have even said it is more fun than Resistance 2 on PS3. So many stories about the PS3 getting a price drop.  With the Game Developers Conference approaching and these rumors causing people to hold off on purchasing, it seems like Sony almost has no choice in the matter.  Chris Roper is predicting an...

The Geekbox: Episode 8

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1044 days ago

Watchmen is still fresh with the Geekbox crew and since Jade Kraus and Mike Cruz from 1UP are sitting in on this one the first 25 minutes are all about the movie.  There is a discussion about the validity of directors’ cuts and how that will affect Watchmen. The SciFi channel is being rebranded as SyFy and the group is not taking it lightly.  They think it is a horrible idea, but they seem to miss the importance of some of the business issues involved and how being able to create a brand is important. Things start to wrap up with a little...

gdgt weekly 030 – 03.19.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1044 days ago

The guys are talking about the Apple announcements from Tuesday and they have a lot to say.  They have some astute takes on Apple approaching the phone market in a way that almost no other handset manufacturer has before in that they see the software as the real platform. One prediction that has always been around is the idea that Apple may introduce an iPhone that has a physical keyboard.  Ryan and Peter both believe that it is simply a matter of time.  Apple is traditionally capable of holding out on things that seem necessary to many so we...

Rebel FM – Episode 11 – 03/18/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1045 days ago

Like everyone else in games journalism the Rebel FM guys have played through Resident Evil 5 and have quite a bit to say about it.  Co-op play styles have provided some insight into Arthur and Anthony’s personalities.  They are also spot on when they say the story takes some cues from Metal Gear Solid and is completely ridiculous. Arthur is on the same page as Jeff from the Giant Bombcast on MadWorld.  It seems to be one of those things that once you hear the problems you can’t help but notice them when you do play it. In the second...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 127

by Jonathan Downin in Games1045 days ago

More love for MadWorld here.  While not doing anything well, the combination of the elements that are there come together in a way that is enjoyable.  Apparently the color commentary is genuinely funny as well. The guys are talking about Puzzle Quest: Galactrix on this one as well and they seem to like it a bit more than most others have on other podcasts.  They do mention that it seems slower than the first one while being somewhat frustrating, but it keeps pulling them back in. Cory and Shawn will be having a spoilerific Resident Evil 5 section...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 108

by Jonathan Downin in Games1045 days ago

Nobody has anything positive to say about the prospect of Bioshock 2.  With a different team working on the second iteration and the premise sounding iffy it is understandable though.  Hopefully the first game’s art style remains intact at least. Nate is still mysteriously absent.  He must be really busy doing whatever he does outside of repeating people’s joke right after they say them. This week, join Erik Brudvig, Hilary Goldstein, David Clayman and Charles Onyett as we discuss the merits of BioShock 2 based off a few pages of...

by Jonathan Downin in Games1045 days ago

Anthony Gallegos of Rebel FM is on this week.  He is on to talk about Resident Evil 5 as he recently finished the game with Philip Kollar, also of Rebel FM, and is an especially big fan of zombies.  The group is not talking too kindly of the A.I. for Sheva, but it’s not as bad as these guys make it sound. The focus and format of this show is still not very clear.  Something needs to be done with the format to make it a little more cohesive. One big announcement is that Jade and Mike will be on the Geekbox this week so look for that tonight...

Diggnation | Episode 194 – SXSW in Austin!

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1045 days ago

These live Diggnations always come off a little awkward.  This week’s episode was shot at South By Southwest and the guys are pretty all-over. The most interesting thing on this week is Kevin’s iPhone OS 3.0 predictions.  Keep in mind, this was shot before yesterday’s event so all things considered he was very close.  Kevin even goes into detail about how cut/paste will work.  He obviously has some sources from within Apple.  Let’s hope he predicts an Apple tablet. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht are in Austin and going...

Giant Bombcast 03-17-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1046 days ago

Jeff is talking MadWorld at the beginning here and he is a little hard to read again.  He seems to like it but he makes the point that everything in the game feels like it wasn’t fully fleshed out.  And apparently this game is way more racist than Resident Evil 5. Peggle gets some more coverage from the Bombcast guys and a good point is made.  Peggle is not a commitment game, it’s a game you want to be able to alt-tab out of and that is not the experience you get when you have to fire it up on Xbox and that makes it somewhat unsuccessful. Lot’s...

Out of the Game, Ep. 1: Born Before Digital

by Jonathan Downin in Misc1046 days ago

Wanted to get this out as soon as possible.  The details of this new cast aren’t known, but this first episode has a stellar cast.  Give it a listen.  Will update with more information soon. Update: Let’s get this clear right up front: this podcast is not really about games.  It’s a group of well-spoken, thoughtful people who were once in games journalism sharing and discussing their views. The main topic starting off this one is how social networks have shaped how we interact and deal with others in our life.  This leads...

MacBreak Weekly 132: iPhone 3.0

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1046 days ago

Copy/paste?  Check.  Stereo Bluetooth?  Check.  Phone-wide search?  Check. The group is talking about today’s announcement regarding the iPhone OS 3.0 update.  Almost everything that people have been asking for, except for video, is coming in this next release.  Some of the biggest additions are for developers, but we will definitely reap those benefits as well on the consumer side.  Unfortunately, this isn’t slated for release until summer.  That could mean anywhere from 3 to 6 months. As it turns out, the DRM in the new iPod...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 40

by Jonathan Downin in Games1046 days ago

The guys are very excited about Mass Effect 2.  Bioware has now stated that it is slated for release in the early part of next year.  That is quite a way off and let’s just hope it’s not too long since the release of the first one so that people will have forgotten about the series. A big discussion about the recent outpouring of Bioshock 2 information.  There are a lot of weird things going on in this game including the new big sisters and playing as a big daddy, but the most distressing is the word that there will be multiplayer. ...
