Giant Bombcast 03-24-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1039 days ago

Ulf Andersson and Gunnar Johansson from GRIN are on this week and they have brought some Swedish delights.  No more drink taste tests, it’s all about weird foreign candies here.  Oh the salty goodness. If you haven’t heard about OnLive yet you absolutely must go check out what it’s all about. Imagine streaming HD full-quality graphics version of Crisis and Burnout Paradise to any screen without the need of a beefy PC or console.  Sound ridiculous?  It is, but it’s real.  The guys give their opinions and they are going...

Rebel FM – Episode 12 – 03/24/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1039 days ago

Rebel FM is back with former 1UP fan-favorites Jane Pinckard and Kathleen Sanders.  We haven’t heard an episode this off topic since the episode with Robert Ashley a few weeks ago. After talking about not much the group eventually transitions into a rather good discussion about gaming new and general news coverage.  They touch upon how our sources for news is ever changing and how many sites now have no choice but infuse their news with personality to retain readers.  The “snarkiness” factor is a big issue here. Very little...

The HotSpot 03/24/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1039 days ago

Max Payne 3 has been announced– and nobody is excited about it.  The first 2 were very good games so it is pretty surprising that nobody here has very fond memories of them.  The recent Mark Wahlberg driven movie certainly hasn’t done the franchise’s image any favors. Recent reports reveal that Sony has started charging publishers $.16 per gigabyte of download data on the PSN.  This is really bad news for everyone.  Expect to no longer get as many demos on PS3 as Xbox 360 and even less DLC.  Sony is already struggling up against...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 105 – El Di Torturo

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies1039 days ago

This show filmed at SXSW continues the trend of live Totally Rad Shows being just a little more awkward than normal shows.  We all love him, but Alex really knows how to crank up that not quite funny for just a little too long quotient. How can it be The Totally Rad Show without a games segment?  This may be the first one.  The result is a very movie-heavy show, but don’t expect any blockbusters.  This is the SXSW show so it’s nothing but smaller/indie stuff.  Best Worst Movie sounds amazing, if you liked King of Kong, search this...

CO-OP | Episode 103 – Dusting off the Wii

by Jonathan Downin in Games1040 days ago

Back to the 3 game format, it feels like the good ‘ol days. First up in the Wii-centric episode is MadWorld.  There is a lot to like about MadWorld and as almost everyone there are a lot of good things said about the game.  The main thing that seems to please everyone is how successful the art style is.  This also proves to make Ryan wish the game was on the 360 or PS3 so the art could really shine. World of Goo takes the second spot.  The game has been out for a while but it is definitely one of those overlooked gems that came out during...

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 41

by Jonathan Downin in Games1040 days ago

The guys are talking a bit about the new Punch Out! game.  For those of us that grew up with the original on the NES this is pretty huge.  These are the kind of games that make it difficult for even the hardcore gamers not to buy a Wii.  Nintendo has the mass market and then releases just a enough nostalgia driven games to grab the rest of us. The fact that a DS game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time is getting ported to the Wii is a really telling thing about how developers are approaching Wii development.  The idea in itself...

Good Grief: 03/23/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1040 days ago

The group is talking about the What’s in the Box video that surfaced last week.  There was a lot of speculation that it was a viral video to promote Half Life 3 or something coming from Valve, but that has since been debunked.  It’s a cool video with a lot of atmosphere, but if you hate the filming style of Cloverfield skip this one as well. Sam Kennedy leaves halfway through the cast and things devolve from there, in a good way.  There is plenty of random philosophy, bad puns and plenty of random reader questions.  Chris Plante...

Xbox 360 Fancast 109 — Dirty Dishes

by Jonathan Downin in Games1040 days ago

The E74 issue is not going away and the guys have a few things to say about it.  Some people were saying that it was possibly just the Red Ring of Death with a change in the error display introduced by the New Xbox Experience.  People are still getting the RRoD though so it doesn’t seem to be the case. The creator of The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, James Silva, is on this week and he is a funny guy, very wry.  The game is done and is slated for release during Microsoft’s “Days of Arcade” promotion.  He goes into the process...

New Servers = Faster Loading

by Jonathan Downin in Blog1040 days ago

Some of you may have noticed that the site was down for a few hours earlier today.  That is because we have moved to an all new grid-based server system.  If that doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t worry about it.  All you need to know is that the site will load significantly faster and will not be affected by traffic. Enjoy actually being able to read the site the speed.

TWiT 187: So Say We All

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1041 days ago

This week’s show is a really great one.  Kevin Rose and David Prager from Digg and Revision3 are on this week and Kevin is talking about his successful call of last week’s iPhone OS 3.0 announcements.  He gives some insight into Digg’s newest product which is a link shortening service that is to be debuted within the next few weeks. The backlash from the recent Facebook interface change has been pretty dramatic but not unexpected.  The general public tends to always hate sweeping overarching changes to something they use on...

Player One Podcast | Episode 126 – Grow some gonads

by Jonathan Downin in Games1041 days ago

Off the top here an interesting topic of how we buy games has changed comes up.  The guys put forth a few theories; one of the most intriguing being that the multiplayer components of games have cause us to purchase these games sooner and makes it very hard to get into these games further into their life-cycles. Greg Sewart reveals that he has made a decision that he will try to buy all multiplatform games on the PS3 due to the 360 just being prone to breaking.  This is definitely an understandable viewpoint, especially considering the recent...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #313 : NCAA basketball 09 March Madness Edition, The Pitt and NFS Shift

by Jonathan Downin in Games1041 days ago

The Maj has another interview packed show this week.  The interview with Todd Howard is the most information induced.  He talks a bit about the new DLC coming on Tuesday the 24th named The Pitt.  It takes place in Pittsburgh and will also have a new weapon called the Auto Axe.  Todd also shares that it should be about 4 hours long. The direction that the Need for Speed series is taking is pretty interesting, but the interview here is short and doesn’t provide too much information. Check out the pictures of the Major in a hard-hat and subsequently...

Windows Weekly 99: The Turrican Enigma

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1043 days ago

Internet Explorer 8 is finally out and it sounds like there are some good improvements, but nothing mind-blowing.  Paul has done a review which you see over at the SuperSite for Windows.  All we really need is for IE to be standards compliant. Silverlight has seen some changes and is now capable of running local code similar to Adobe Air.  This is very different from what Microsoft said they were doing with it when they first introduced it.  Adobe Air has already taken off to some extent so Microsoft will have another uphill battle on their...

Invisible Walls – Episode 49

by Jonathan Downin in Games1043 days ago

This is the pre-Game Developers Conference show and the guys are covering nothing but business stuff on this one.  Pete Wanat, Executive producer of the upcoming Wanted game, is sitting in and has a lot to say about the industry as a whole. There is a surprising amount of good things being said about Sony and PS3 here.  If Sony really can play out their 10-year plan with the PS3 they may be in pretty good shape right now.  There is a lot of straight talk about the Wii and the Xbox 360 seems to have a few big exclusive games on the horizon. ...

Joystiq Podcast 090 – Funny voices edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1043 days ago

RE5, RE5, RE5.  It is impossible to escape this game.  Ludwig has finally played through it so he has some things to add to what Justin already covered in his round-table. Justin is talking about The Path which sounds like a very interesting “game.”  It is developed by Tale of Tales and is a somewhat twisted and haunting re-telling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story.  It’s really nice that Joystiq and guys like Justin are taking the time to play and cover some of these smaller/independent games.  At $10 it sounds...
