Giant Bombcast 03-31-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1032 days ago

Jeff isn’t to pleased with Punch Out!! and he is being very candid about it.  The graphics looks great, but it is the same thing as the old ones and the old ones were just pattern recognition games are his arguments.  Yet he still says he likes the old ones and will buy the new one, figure that out. It’s good to hear some pretty positive things about Dragon Age: Origins as some have shared some concerns.  It’s time for another huge Bioware PC RPG, let’s hope this delivers. Vinny has played through Resident Evil 5 twice...

at1UP: 03/31/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1032 days ago

Matt Leone is talking on this week talking about his Brutal Legend cover story which can been seen on 1UP.  The feature is being rolled out over the week, but you can go check out the first part, which is a Tim Schafer profile, and the second part should be up later today. In their GDC wrap-up Jade starts out by pouring some love on World of Warcraft since she sat-in on a panel about the quest construction.  She also attended a panel on the artwork in Dead Space and has a few things to say about that.  Mike Cruz also has a few things to say about...

The HotSpot 03/31/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1032 days ago

Zelda is the starter topic here and then the guys move onto OnLive talk.  An interesting point is made that almost everyone in the GameSpot forums is negative on the platform.  It seems internet skepticism and console fanboism is making it difficult for people to keep an open mind, or even have the ability to be excited about something that isn’t from Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. A teaser trailer for Infinity Wards next iteration in their Call of Duty series was released at GDC.  It should be noted that the “Call of Duty” name...

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 42

by Jonathan Downin in Games1032 days ago

The big Nintendo news from GDC is that you can now load downloaded games from the SD card.  The Wii also now supports SD cards up to 32Gb.  This is part of the System Menu 4.0 update which is available now. The guys are pretty mixed on the new Punch Out!  There seems to quite an uproar that before your opponent throws a punch they flash red making the game quite a bit easier.  For those that have been playing since the NES days this feels like just more of Nintendo skewing towards the mainstream with their classic sequels. The new Zelda: Spirit...

Player One Podcast | Episode 127 – Throw Zelda from the Train

by Jonathan Downin in Games1033 days ago

This is a very special episode with none other than the man, the legend, Shane Bettenhausen.  The guys are in San Fransisco for GDC and Shane is back at his old digs finishing his moving duties so the opportunity was seized and this is the result. There is a lot of Nintendo talk and reminiscing on this one.  The guys jump topics a lot and  this results in it feeling like old friends just chatting about games.  Nobody saw too much at GDC, so don’t expect too many detailed impressions.  There is some good Punch Out and Batman: Arkham Asylum...

CO-OP | Episode 104 – GDC 2009 Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games1033 days ago

This is the GDC coverage you have been waiting for.  Many podcasts have covered GDC, but now you really get to see some of the best stuff that was there.  The CO-OP guys hit another one out of the park.  And did we mention that Jeff Cannata and Adam Sessler are sitting in as well? OnLive, OnLive, OnLive.  The madness just won’t stop.  The guys have some good impressions and what everyone can agree on is that even if this doesn’t work in this iteration it will end up taking over at some point. There is so much covered here: DSi,...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 106 – Arrowing

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies1033 days ago

The movie in the first segment, Monsters vs Aliens, is something that a lot of people who watch TRS probably don’t care too much about, but it’s nice that the guys can cover these sort of mainstream, light and fun movies as well as the bigger releases. Jeff went to GDC last week and has a lot to share.  Yet more OnLive talk, but the kicker here really is the independent stuff he saw.  It sounds like there are some very interesting, smaller stuff in the works that you should check out if you are tired of 1st and 3rd person shooters. ...

Xbox 360 Fancast 110 — Fanmail Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games1033 days ago

This is pretty much an all fanmail episode.  No Alexander this week so the sexual innuendo is kept to a reasonable level.  There is some talk about the next Xbox and OnLive. The big draw here is the Resident Evil 5 spoiler talk after the main show ends.  Skip it if you haven’t finished it yet though since it is full of spoilers. We’ve been bad. We know it. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper look at fanmail. With GDC going on last week, and very few Xbox announcements emerging from it, we decided this would...

Out of the Game, Ep. 2: Game Developers Conference 2009

by Jonathan Downin in Misc1033 days ago

The second episode of the newest gaming podcast on the block with a dream team of former editors and one freelancer is out and it’s even better than the first.  Shawn Elliot has taken the reigns this time and the topics stick a lot closer to gaming since GDC has just wrapped up. Since most of this group is now in game development in some manner almost everyone has something to say in regards to the events of the past week.  OnLive gets discussed here and there are some pretty wide ranging takes.  Everyone seems genuinely interested in seeing...

TWiT 188: Judge Mental

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1034 days ago

There is the requisite Twitter talk up-front here.  Has Twitter jumped the shark?  The noise to real information ratio is pretty high and is just getting worse as its popularity grows. There are so many topics in this one.  This is a three person affair, and with Leo and John drinking it feels like friends talking tech at a pub.  It’s actually a nice change of pace to the normal TWiT. Leo is pretty excited about OnLive.  He makes a great point when he says he doesn’t think this is aimed at the hardcore.  The people who want to...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #314 :MLB 2K9 and Cliff Bleszinski

by Jonathan Downin in Games1034 days ago

The Major is talking to Cliffy B Cliff Bleszinski this week and he is talking about the incoming Gears of War 2 map pack, SnowBlind, which is set for release on the 31st.  It sounds like there is some cool stuff in there and they all include Horde Mode support.  Cliff also teases some new game announcements that will be coming soon. The second interview is centered on Major League Baseball 2K9.  Baseball games have really improved over the past few years and this one seems to be pretty great as well.  It’s amazing how good sports games...

Invisible Walls – Episode 50

by Jonathan Downin in Games1034 days ago

Pete Wanat is sitting in again this week and he is finally talking about his game, Wanted: Weapons of Fate.  He talks a lot about how licensed products can be successful and we his have generally a cut above the rest.  Wanted has gotten decent reviews, it got a 7.2 from GameTrailers specifically. GDC is the talk of the second half here, but instead of talking about the announcements and games the focus is on the show itself and how it has become less strictly about developers.  Everyone has a take on this, but the main sentiment is that it is...

Tekzilla | Episode 81

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1035 days ago

With all of the GDC craziness and the launch of OnLiveMedium we missed this one on Thursday. The Tekzilla duo have Vizio’s VSB210WS Sound Bar With Wireless Subwoofer on the show this week and they liked it.  Don’t be deterred by the wireless, Patrick calls it “shockingly good.”  In the vein of home theater they are also talking about HD media players from Western Digital and Seagate. Speaking of GDC, Jeff Cannata from The Totally Rad Show is on this week and he saw some cool stuff.  He gives a broad overview of what GDC...

Listen UP: 03/27/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1036 days ago

This one starts out with the BioWare doctors and they have a few things to say about the evolution of western RPG design.  They don’t say anything about Mass Effect 2, but they do talk a bit about Dragon Age. David Jaffe commands the second segment and never runs out of things to say.  He is always opinionated and that is no different here, but he has real views on things.  There are many issues he takes with games journalism and even admits he just looks at review scores.  He goes on to suggest that 1UP move to a 1 paragraph review system...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 114

by Jonathan Downin in Games1036 days ago

The obligatory  topic of OnLive gets a mention and Peer thinks it is way ahead of its time.  Maybe so, we’ll see. Kojima’s talk at GDC get some coverage here and Greg Miller surprising is up on the whole fiction.  With a new Metal Gear Solid all but announced to be coming Peer is airing his grievances with the series.  He dares to call Kojima a not so great director. This is a short and tame version of the usual Game Scoop.  With many still at GDC and the guys that are back probably tired it is understandable.  Stay tuned for Listen...
