Xbox 360 Fancast 103: Wars (of the Halo variety)

by Jonathan Downin in Games1081 days ago

The Halo Wars cutscenes sound like a departure from the way the story is handled in previous Halo titles– in a good way.  The guys are only talking in detail about the gameplay, no story stuff here.  It sounds like they are really liking it, especially the controls, and that is saying a lot for a game like this on console.  This looks to be a very action centered RTS, sounds right seeing as this is Halo. More universal dislike for the controls of Resident Evil 5.  The survival horror has really evolved since RE4.  I am currently playing...

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 36

by Jonathan Downin in Games1082 days ago

A lot of Japanese games are covered up front on this one.  Apparently there are a lot of good games for Wii and DS out in Japan that those of us in the States just never get. It sounds like there is another mediocre, bordering on horrible, Sonic game on the way.  That franchise has been run into the ground.  Not one good 3D Sonic game has been made.  How is that possible? Electronic Arts is putting 50 percent of its development efforts behind the Wii, and that includes a version of Dead Space for Nintendo’s console. Matt’s been playing...

Project Lore Episode 14.1: Azjol-Nerub

by Jonathan Downin in Games1082 days ago

Alex has leveled a hunter for this raid and Zand is is not loving it too much.  There is some flimsy rationalization from Alex on why this is good, but really doesn’t convince anyone. Nothing game wise happens here– nothing.  The boys discuss a little and then decide to have a nice friendly “luau” around the fire.  I guess that’s part of what WOW is all about, hangin’ with your pals.  Hopefully there’s some action in part 2 coming tomorrow though. The Project Lore Alliance crew returns and prepare to...

TWiT 181: I Am Not Spock

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1083 days ago

Bill Gates releasing mosquitoes into the audience at the TED conference is the craziest thing I have heard all week.  I understand that he wanted to make a point and raise awareness about malaria, but that is FAR from the best way to do it.  As John C Dvorak put it, “That was a dick move.” I have talked about it a lot in many posts recently, but the Kindle 2 is becoming more of a reality day by day.  Looks slick and really, really thin. The topic of print media dying has been a popular talking point for more than two years now. ...

Windows Weekly 93: Flip, The Bird

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1085 days ago

Leo and Paul start out this episode talking about what Microsoft is really getting out of the beta for Windows 7.  Paul has some problems with the default settings and Leo is a little bit more positive on everything. As everyone else, the guys are not too pleased with the way Microsoft is handling the versions of Windows 7 they are planning to release. Windows 7, netbooks, UAC issue overkill, Microsoft Fix It, new Kindle, Google Ocean, and more. Runtime – 1:32:42 Link (Windows Weekly)

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 108

by Jonathan Downin in Games1085 days ago

It is going to be interesting how Halo Wars does.  The Halo fanbase is very much people who want fast first-person shooting action, not the slower paced RTS game that Halo Wars seems it will deliver. More Puzzle Quest is coming on February 24th.  For the sake of my productivity I wish I had never tried the first one. Puzzle Quest: Galactrix has made a date with XBLA. Ryan reviewed R-Type Dimensions, this week’s XBLA game. We’ve been playing the Halo Wars demo and are digging it. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up has both a dumb...

Engadget Podcast 132 – 02.06.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1085 days ago

Engadget is doing something really cool.  In the wake of all the bad news of daily layoffs, they have decided that they will give away something tech related every day.  A lot of companies have decided to take part in this so there will be some cool stuff to be had. The announcement that the cheapest version of Windows 7 that will be purchasable at a store will be $260.  That’s just crazy.  On top of that, there are a confusing number of versions you will be able to buy.  Give us 1 version, with everything in it, at no higher than $150,...

Joystiq Podcast 084 – Natives are restless edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1085 days ago

Justin explains on the cast that he tried to take a step back and review Killzone 2 on it’s own merits rather than highly weighted by his personal preferences.  He verdict is basically: not inspiring. Red Dead Redemption really has my interest peaked.  There really aren’t enough good western games out there and if HBO’s Deadwood has shown us, the wild west is awesome! Quote of the cast:  “The problem with Killzone 2 reviews is… you end up reviewing the PS3.” -Ludwig Kietzmann Here we are again after several...

Invisible Walls – Episode 43

by Jonathan Downin in Games1085 days ago

Marcus makes this podcast what it is.  That guy is great. Some Uncharted 2 info in this episode.  There is a theory from the guys that there might be a coop experience in there.  If you haven’t played the first one it really is one of the best looking and most enjoyable PS3 games out there. What did you think of the FF XIII trailer?  I am ready for a new Final Fantasy game, especially one that looks this good. This week the team looks at Fallout DLC, Uncharted 2, and early videogame reviews. Runtime – 32:22 Link (Invisible Walls)

Project Lore Horde Ragefire Chasm 1.1

by Jonathan Downin in Games1085 days ago

For the Horde!  The guys have changed it up this week and have switched teams and they are a little out of their element. It’s cool to see some lower level play after watching level 80s for a while.  There are a few more episodes that are already out so go check out part 2, part 3 and part 4 over at the site.  Part 5 comes out today. Project Lore find themselves transformed into Horde lowbies in Ragefire Chasm. Find out how our Project Lore adventurers roll Horde Old School style this week on Project Lore Runtime – 6:50 Link (Project...

Tekzilla | Episode 74

by Jonathan Downin in Games1086 days ago

Garnett Lee of 1UP is on this weeks episode.  What happened to Veronica?  She always seems to be busy with other things to attend to.  She’ll be back next week. There has been a lot of good buzz going around about the HP MediaSmart Server.  It seems like a great product for those that are fairly versed in tech and Windows Home Server, but for most out there it is probably a little complicated.  Apple TV seems to be much more of a step in the right direction, but even that hasn’t caught on. Dump your cable modem for WiMAX? iSquint,...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 78

by Jonathan Downin in Games1086 days ago

An amazing special guest in Mr. T on this very special episode of Podcast Beyond.  He doesn’t seem to pleased with the Beyond guys here though. The big topic of this week is 80s TV shows and which could be turned into the best game.  I gotta go with the PBS classic Square One Television made by a collaboration between Tim Schafer and Jonathan Blow. Chris, Jeff, Ryan and Sam have made excellent progress this week in Being Awesome 101, though the team still has several catch-up assignments for Introduction to Applied Physics. But the team...

gdgt weekly 024 – 02.05.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1086 days ago

The date for the digital TV switch-over has officially been pushed back and that date is June 12th, 2009.  I have to agree with Ryan and Peter on this one, what is the point?  Does this really make an impact other than just confusing people even further? A Dell phone is an interesting prospect.  As computing is quickly moving away from the traditional laptop and desktop experiences for day-to-day tasks, it really does make sense that someone like Dell would want to get into this space. Yeah, so the government postponed the analog TV cutoff date...

Rebel FM — Episode 5 — 02/04/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1087 days ago

The Rebel FM crew is joined by two of the Area 5 gents again this week. Anthony is talking about Dawn of War II on this episode.  Coming from the same guys that brought us the amazing Company of Heroes, it looks to be a more accessible take on their already very refined take on real-time strategy. Great discussion on shooters here.  As is proving to be the norm on Rebel FM we get another very in-depth, serious approach to discussing the merits and validity of different approaches games within the same genre can and do take. Our usual cast of house...
