Joystiq Podcast 085 – Dedication edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1078 days ago

Justin starts this one out by talking about Retro Game Challenge on this week’s episode.  After talking about Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection yesterday it seems people are really feeling nostalgic about the good ‘ol 8-bit days. Halo Wars is receiving a somewhat luke-warm reception from the ‘stiq guys.  RTS continues to not be a genre that console-centric players really love.  Is it the genre and how it works (or doesn’t) on consoles, or do console players just want more action centered games? The audio is a little...

Listen UP – 02/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1078 days ago

The second episode of Listen UP is out, and it is as great as 1UP Yours.  Actually, it basically is 1UP Yours.  There really is nothing here to differentiate itself from 1UP Yours other than he name change, but that’s a good thing if you ask me. If you have been interested in inFAMOUS and Prototype, but have had trouble distinguishing which is which, this is the episode for you.  Garnett saw both of them and goes pretty in-depth about each. Matt Leone has seen God of War 3 and it sounds like it’s going to be good.  The PS3 really...

Engadget Podcast 133 – 02.13.2009: Pre-MWC edition

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1078 days ago

The Engadget guys always do a great job with show notes.  Check out all those details below. Joshua Topolsky loves himself some Palm.  I have never owned a Palm product, but the Palm Pre just may change that in 2010 with their plans to get it on multiple carriers.  That is if there are no serious problems with the release due to patent issues with Apple. You know it people. It’s the Engadget Podcast, back on the most terrifying Friday in February (or any month for that matter) — the 13th. This week you get to hear the dudes discuss...

Tekzilla | Episode 75

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1079 days ago

Those 7″ mini USB monitors are so tempting.  I don’t know what it is about them and they are a little expensive, but it’s just the kind of thing that us gadget lovers can’t escape wanting. Patrick and Veronica cover the Kindle 2 here, but enough has been said about that around here. Intel’s Core i7 just came to the desktop a few months ago and there is already talk of it coming to notebooks.  Still waiting on the updated iMac that hopefully sport this screaming chip. Note: Links below lead to the large Quicktime version. ...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 79

by Jonathan Downin in Games1079 days ago

This is a 1-on-1 affair after an unfortunate incident involving Greg Miller and Mr. T. Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection sounds great.  So many games in this collection.  If you have never played some of these classics or even if you are just feeling a little nostalgic, this is a great value.  Retro games aren’t my thing, but even I’m considering picking this up.  Embrace your gaming roots. If you haven’t been over-saturated with Street Fighter IV talk yet, there are some juicy morsels in here.  Oh, and it got a 9.3...

gdgt weekly 025 – 02.12.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1079 days ago

The Kindle 2 looks like it improves on many of the issues that people had with the first one.  A better screen, better aesthetics and a more ergonomic design almost make it a must-buy if it wasn’t for the price point of $359.99.  Ouch. LCDs have really started to dominate the TV market.  The price has come down so much and the quality is good enough for the average consumer and this leads to mass-market appeal.  Plasma is slowly becoming a niche product as LCD becomes somewhat of a standard.  Great for Vizio, bad for Pioneer. Does anyone...

The Geekbox: Episode 4

by Jonathan Downin in Games1079 days ago

A LOT of TV talk on this one.  The crew touches on Burn Notice, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Lost and a few others.  The Geekbox is still going under the games category here, but maybe that won’t be able to hold for too much longer at this rate. Ryan Higgins, seen as somewhat of a dubious member of the podcast, has really started to turn the corner.  The Geekbox feels like it is really starting to find it’s voice and the group is here is solid.  With a grounding in game logic the take on TV and other media is pretty...

Rebel FM — Episode 6 — 02/11/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1080 days ago

A lot of people seem to have a problem with Arthur.  You can see this for yourself on the post for last week’s episode on the eat. sleep. game. website.  People are claiming that it is not due to him not being from 1UP, but because of his abrasive attitude.  Looking back, when Luke Smith started on 1UP Yours there was not this kind of backlash, and his style was similar, so it seems that both of these things are playing a role.  He is more reserved this week so maybe that will help calm people down. With John Davison from What They Play...

Three Red Lights, Episode 105

by Jonathan Downin in Games1080 days ago

The fact that Valve got Microsoft to let them release free DLC for Left 4 Dead is really great.  Microsoft has traditionally been very against this, but hopefully they are learning to let developers make the call. The talk of Mass Effect reminds me of how great that game is.  Sure, there were some small problems and it was a bit glitchy at times, but these are things that are likely to be fixed in a sequel.  Hopefully we see a bit more polish on the graphics now that it is almost 2 years later though. Discussing story in relation to Gears of...

Diggnation | Episode 189 – Wrestling

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1080 days ago

The transformation the guy takes in the first story in this episode is amazing.  It really should be an inspirational story for people to lose weight no matter how big they are. Hacking road signs is cool in concept, but causing a crash because something thinks the “zombocalypse” has come–  not so good. Note: Links below lead to the large Quicktime version.  Other formats are available at the Diggnation site. WTF? Incredibly slimming down pics, Are you kidding me?, Workflow Charts show Fundamental Men vs Women Differences, Story...

MacBreak Weekly 127: Is That A Kindle In Your Pocket?

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1081 days ago

Apple is to keep this multi-touch technology wrapped up for themselves.  They managed to get Google to agree to not use it in Android and as the release of the multi-touch equipped Palm Pre nears, there are mumurs of the possibility of litigation.  Apple was the first with the technology on a handheld device and really innovated with the iPhone, but much like the mouse, I believe these interface tools should be open. The prospect of semi-animated comics coming to iTunes is really cool.  This sounds like a great way to rejuvenate the comic book...

Giant Bombcast 02-10-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1081 days ago

If there are two things the Giant Bomb crew love, they are achievement points and Fable II.  I played plenty of Fable II, but these guys are on a whole other level.  Still have to go back and get those aggravating gargoyles. So many great games came out last year and hearing talk about Fallout 3 makes me want to go back to that game.  I finished the story mode, but there is so much more to do.  Unfortunately the PS3 version isn’t getting any DLC.  Maybe biting the bullet and re-buying it on PC wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Almost...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 35

by Jonathan Downin in Games1081 days ago

The news of Battlefield 1943 is really interesting.  It’s basically a prettied up Battlefield 1942, which is not a bad thing, and it’s coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network along with the PC release at $20.  This is a lot of value, especially if you never gave the original a go. Dragon Age for PC being delayed to coincide with the console release is causing quite an upstir with the PC crowd.  The concern is that this means it is being dumbed down and won’t be the hardcore PC RPG successor to Balder’s Gate...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 99 – Burp-Sneeze

by Jonathan Downin in Games1081 days ago

Afternoon Delight! There is a big announcement at the end of this week’s show.  Steve, the amazing editor of the show, has taken a job and will no longer be working on the show.  The boys are looking for someone to take his place so if you think you are up to it and are in LA you can shoot an email to them at [email protected] A lot of things that missed the mark in this episode.  Fanboys, not so funny; Push, not so entertaining; Afro Samurai, beautiful, but not so fun. What do 3 fanboys think of Fanboys? Does Push pull is in? Is...

The HotSpot 02/10/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1081 days ago

The interview with Pete Wanat on this episode is awesome.  The Wanted game was not on my radar at all, but this guy seems to be telling it straight how it is and not just spewing marketing speak.  Now I am an anxious to give it a try, whereas I wouldn’t have even downloaded a demo before.  Pete Wanat worked on Riddick as well. Dead Rising 2 is coming.  Zombies are the hottest things around right now.  You just can’t not have fun killing zombies, well, maybe House of the Dead proves that wrong, but it holds true most of the time. ...
