CO-OP 0003: A Flower For My Valentine

by Jonathan Downin in Games1070 days ago

And let the weekly shows begin.  The CO-OP crew are finally on a weekly schedule.  Looks like we again have a gaming show to look forward to every Friday. The phrase “solid shooter” has been thrown around a lot in reference to F.E.A.R. 2.  It’s used here as well and just comes off as an “okay is good enough” sort of sentiment. Anyone who has been following these guys from 1UP knows, they like their artsy games, and it’s no different here.  Matt even goes as far as to call Flower an “important”...

TalkRadar 39

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

Another addition to the site in GamesRadar’s TalkRadar.  This was supposed to be added a couple weeks ago, but someone around here was slacking off. The vibe here is quite a bit different from many other game casts around.  The topics skew a tiny bit more casual with top 7 lists off the top and they always have music in the back with sound effects interspersed.  Think The HotSpot with less hard-hitting discussion and more ridiculousity. The guys aren’t the greatest at keeping their podcast page up to date or having the iTunes feed...

Invisible Walls – Episode 45

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

Sounds like the Street Fighter IV launch event ran into all kinds of problems.  With the event organizers panicing about attendance at the last minutes they announced it publicly and 4000 fans showed up to a 1500 person capacity venue.  Pandemonium ensued. The discussion of Halo Wars begs the question: is there any hope for the RTS genre on the console.  It appears that for those who haven’t played this type of game on PC before the answer is possibly, everyone else, not so much. With Marcus, who is a “PC gamer first and foremost,”...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 110

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

This week’s episode is chock-a-block full of reader mail. Little Big Planet completely destroyed everything else at yesterday’s Dice awards sweeping up 8 awards.  Just another case of a critical darling not turning into a commercial success. Game Scoop! has quickly become the #1 gaming podcast to go to for good and bad, mostly bad, relationship advice.  Bad advice is always good. It’s Daemon Hatfield, Ryan Geddes, Greg Miller, and Charles Onyett this week. We’ve got a huge stack of listener mail to catch up on. Game Scoop!...

Windows Weekly 95: Windows Mobile 6.5

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1071 days ago

If you haven’t heard enough bashing on Windows Mobile 6.5 yet you had better tune in here for another healthy dose.  The fact that anything bordering on new and improved won’t be out until mid 2010 is incredibly, bad. Some cool sales information from Valve on the effectiveness of price cuts and how that leads to huge spikes in sales.  They saw a 3000% increase in sales when they cut their game, Left 4 Dead’s price by half over last weekend.  That seems to show that prices for software is too high and that companies could actually...

Listen UP – 02/20/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

Flower is quickly becoming a media darling.  No matter their opinion almost everyone seems to be able to appreciate the game on some level. There isn’t much more to be said about Halo Wars.  Some like it, some don’t, but nobody seems to really love it or really hate it.  Sounds like one to wait until it hits $40. Quite a few interesting points brought up as to how Rockstar could make GTA fresh and really fun again.  The zombie idea is definitely interesting, but are zombies getting played out?  No way.  The use of GTA as platform...

Joystiq Podcast 086 – MC Trustworthy edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

Holy muffled Justin, Spiderman. Chris has a mostly positiveness take on Halo Wars.  Justin, as many other out there, is frustrated with the periodic downtime and  lack of consistent action. Another polarizing game this week is Spiderman: Web of Shadows.  Justin has liked almost every Spiderman game and in recent years and that trend continues whereas Ludwig isn’t too keen on it. The prospect of a new American McGee’s Alice is pretty interesting.  A lot of people probably don’t remember or never played the first one, but if...

Engadget Podcast 134 – 02.20.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1071 days ago

The Mobile World Congress is the talk of the week as was the case on gdgt weekly yesterday.  The amount of innovation being strove for in the phone industry this year is really amazing.  If only the results were a little bit more impressive. More dissapointed reactions to Windows Mobile 6.5.  How is it that a company that has more engineers and more experience coding OSs than any other company is so bad a making an… OS? Boxee losing Hulu support is a pretty big deal.  Hulu has grown quickly and currently offers one of the best online TV...

Tekzilla | Episode 76

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1072 days ago

The round-up of HD mini camcorders is really interesting.  It is pretty amazing how quickly we have gotten HD recording in a form factor small enough to fit in our pocket.  The Flip seems to retain its “standard” denotation. We also get some follow-up answers to some questions about Windows Home Server stuff that was covered on last week’s episode.  That stuff is pretty complicated. How good is a $200 HD Camcorder? We’ve got Creative’s Vado, Flip’s mino HD and Kodak’s Zi6! Tip Of My Tongue …. find...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 80

by Jonathan Downin in Games1072 days ago

There is a special guest on this week’s special episode joining in on some special discussions, the special Playstation Blog guy, Jeff Rubenstein. Plenty of Patapon 2 and Street Fighter IV talk on this one.  Way to go Capcom, you’ve managed to make a game that is almost universally loved. Oh, and the Playstation boys are still pouring the love on Killzone 2.  The LPM (laughs-per-minute) meter is probably broken after this one. Greg, Jeff, Ryan and Sam might not have the graceful guidance of one Chris Roper, but they have a very special...

gdgt weekly 026 – 02.19.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1072 days ago

It’s a mobile phone explosion this week with the Mobile World Congress taking place this week.  At an hour and a half this is one of the longest gdgt weeklies in recent times as well, if not ever. A lot of the phones coming out of the show are based on Windows Mobile 6.1.  With everyone waiting for the already knowingly limited 6.5 release coming late this year, it’s hard to get too excited about many of these new phones.  We can expect prettied up graphic overlays though.  Exciting! Apple creates their app store and 8-10 months...

Rebel FM — Episode 7 — 02/18/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1073 days ago

The big news up front here is that Nick Suttner is heading to Sony to be a “product evaluator.” It really is pretty amazing how Burnout Paradise is still getting coverage.  Those Criterion guys are geniuses for how they decided to manage the DLC for that game. Topic of the week in this episode is a discussions of mature content in games.  This is a very timely discussion with the nudity in GTAIV: The Lost and the Damned.  The consensus seems to be that games, just like any other medium, have to earn their adult moments for them to...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 36

by Jonathan Downin in Games1073 days ago

Right up front we get a lot of Dawn of War II talk.  The guys are obviously pretty keen on it seeing how they gave it a 9.0. Hunting games aren’t generally looked upon favorably with game journalists and that’s not too much different here, but talk quite a bit about The Hunter. Braid is coming to PC.  It was originally set to be $20, but creator Jonathan Blow saw the outcry and decided to lower it to $15.  The game is something everyone should experience so if you didn’t play it on XBLA now you have a chance to get it. News...

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 37

by Jonathan Downin in Games1073 days ago

The IGN Nintendo guys missed their regular Monday release, but that was so they could talk about this morning’s announcement that the DSi will be released on April 5th at $169.99. At the first news of Dead Space coming to Wii many were apprehensive about the prospect.  After hearing that it will be an original game and seeing the trailer it looks like it could be really good, even though it is on rails. Mario & Luigi 3 is coming out this year.  That’s fine, but just give us a new New Super Mario Bros!  The first one was incredible! We’ve...

Diggnation | Episode 190 – Kevin Rose: Bill Gates Fanboy?

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1073 days ago

Watching Diggnation it’s pretty easy to view Kevin Rose as an everyday dude, but when you hear that he was invited to have lunch with Bill Gate you realize the he really isn’t. Wow, the Onion really nails it with the announcement of SONY’s latest and worst.  Don’t miss it. There is a very coherent and thought out discussion on the issue of sponsors disassociating themselves from Michael Phelps after the pot smoking incident. When a Mac fanboy meets Bill Gates, Sony Releases New Stupid POS That Doesn’t F#cking Work,...
