Re-designed and freshened up!

by Jonathan Downin in Blog1104 days ago

Welcome to the new layout around these parts.  If you have visited before, we hope you like the new layout, if not, welcome! There are still some problems with formatting in Internet Explorer along with a few other things to be worked out and polished up, but everything should be in great shape soon. The goal with this re-design was to make the site cleaner and easier to read.  It has to be said, we were a little behind in terms of design before.  Let us know what you think in the comments.  Enjoy!

The Geekbox: Episode 1

by Jonathan Downin in Games1105 days ago

Ryan Scott, formerly of 1UP and GFW, has released the first episode of his new podcast The Geekbox.  This is the spiritual successor to GFW Radio and LAN Party that people have been clamoring for. This is not strictly PC talk by any means though.  It really covers the whole geek spectrum when it comes to topics. There are some familiar voices on this rather lengthy introductory edition so settle in and give it a listen. Wherein we discuss who we are and how we got here, our personal 2008 game of the year picks, Greg Ford’s stance (or lack thereof)...

Windows Weekly 90: The Last Beta

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1105 days ago

The Windows Beta seems to be going pretty well after an initial problem with server capacity.  The opinion of most seems to be very positive. Rumors of the Zune being discontinued are pretty rampant.  Leo and Paul seem to think this is not necessarily the case.  I personally don’t think this would be too good.  The Zune is no iPod killer (yet), but it provides some nice, healthy competition. Windows 7, Office 14, Zune rumors, MSDN, Software Wars, Roku, and more. Runtime – 50:28 Link (Windows Weekly)

Diggnation | Episode 185 – High Fives with Jimmy Fallon!

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1106 days ago

Diggnation has Jimmy Fallon this week.  Jimmy fits right in with the usual pairing of Kevin and Alex when it comes to humor. Jimmy says he’s into tech and he obviously is to an extent, but he just seems a little lost with some of the stuff which makes the tech thing seem to be a little bit motivated by marketing for his upcoming show. The episode is great and whether Jimmy is really into tech or not, it’s going to be a big part of his show.  A sign of the changing times and one to definitely keep an eye on, check out the goings-on...

Invisible Walls – Episode 40

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

If you’re not tired of hearing about 1UP or CES give this one a look. Not too much else going on this week.  You could probably skip this episode and not miss too much. There is a pretty cool scroll of EGM covers over the years that may be worth they view. The guys discuss CES post mortem, DLC controversies, the demise of EGM and your viewer questions are answered! Runtime – 33:11 Link (Invisible Walls)

Engadget Podcast 129 – 01.16.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1106 days ago

The crew covers the current Apple situation after the reveal that Steve Jobs will be taking a six month leave.  The discussion is handled with great care and a lot of great insight. Some interesting Windows 7 talk here.  The observation that both Apple and Microsoft are taking key ideas from Google’s methods. Quote of the cast:  “Steve Jobs doesn’t deserve any more respect than anybody else, but he deserves as much respect as anybody else.”  -Joshua Topolsky Yes! Engadget is back from CES and ready for action. We thought...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 105

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

Love ‘em or hate ‘em the guys are talking NPD sales numbers this week. Ps3 price drop seems inevitable at this point.  With the current economic climate and the sales of PS3 currently, it’s hard to see there not being a price drop in the first half of this year. Voice actor, Kari Wahlgren, from Prince of Persia is on the show with some behind the scenes game talk. We talk about MadWorld on the Wii, which is the best ultra gory black and white cel-shaded videogame coming to the Wii this year. Calling it now. The Music Store for...

Joystiq Podcast 081 – Competent edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

Here we are, getting a late start on the Friday casts.  It’s not you Joystiq, it’s me. Wii Play is the best selling game of ’08!  Depressing.  It is really good to see Left 4 Dead selling so well though.  Such a great and innovative game deserves to do well.  Here’s a tip people: support good games by buying them and we will probably get more. Quote of the cast:  “The Price Is Right; it’s the same thing– Drew Carry is fat and Bob Barker was old.”  -Justin McElroy Well, we’re back with...

gdgt weekly 021 – 01.16.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1107 days ago

If you were clammoring for some gadget talk from the gdgt guys that is not dominated by the Palm Pre, here it is. The big topic of this episode is the recent news of Steve Jobs taking a 6 month leave from Apple.  There are some wide ranging opinions about what this means for Apple and if Jobs will even return to the company. On one hand Steve has been instrumental making Apple what it is from the company it was 10 years ago.  Certainly things won’t be the same without him, but has he already instilled a corporate culture that can be sustained...

Podcast Beyond – Episode 75

by Jonathan Downin in Games1107 days ago

Guys, is it so hard to get album art for the podcast?  Just whip something up and stick with it, thank you. The IGN team is talking about Sony’s recent money problems and how they are expected to post a 1.1B dollar loss for 2008.  It will be very interesting to see what Sony does to try and turn things around in 2009.  Is it already too late? Chris, Greg, Jeff and Ryan are buckled up, strapped in and hands-down ready to go all out and rock this week’s episode. On today’s exciting edition of Podcast Beyond, Greg finds out that...

1UP.com down– and out?

by Jonathan Downin in Blog, Games1107 days ago

We have just noticed that 1UP.com is no longer linked to the 1UP website.  The following message is displayed: You have reached a page that is no longer in our system. Click here to go to the home page. Upon trying to click the link provided you are redirected back to the same error page. It may just be routine maintenance, but with all that has happened at 1UP within the past week there may be grounds for serious concern over what is to happen with 1UP.  Although one would assume with the buyout by UGO that there would be a message or redirect...

Three Red Lights, Episode 102

by Jonathan Downin in Games1108 days ago

Three Read Lights is missing Hilary again this week.  It’s just not the same without his sarcasm and incessant ripping into people. A discussion on bots in this episode.  That really brings me back the Quake days.  Not many games have bots any more, do you miss them?  Bots. This week, join Ryan Geddes, Erik Brudvig, Nate Ahearn and special guest IGN Guides edior Colin Moriarty as we discuss the most important things in the world: Xbox 360 games and VH1′s new reality series Tool Academy. And no, it does not star Nate. Yet. When will...

Project Lore Episode 13.1: The Nexus

by Jonathan Downin in Games1108 days ago

The boys are on to a cool new area in Wrath of the Lich King called The Nexus. It’s amazing how much Blizzard has packed into this recent expansion.  The graphics both technically and artistically have seen a huge bump. If you are clamoring for more Jeff Cannata from The Totally Rad Show you can get your fix here since he is still sitting in. Project Lore begins their adventures into The Nexux in WotLK. How will the guys do against the new mobs, and what loot will drop for them in this episode? Tune in and find out. Runtime – 9:13 Link...

by Jonathan Downin in Games1109 days ago

First taste test of 2009, and it’s a downer, literally. Yet more of the team from 1UP has infiltrated another podcast.  Former 1Uper AND ex-Gamespotter Giancarlo Varanini is on the show this week with a lot to add. We’re joined by former EGM editor Giancarlo Varanini for discussions of the Windows 7 beta, the future of Tony Hawk, the escalating madness surrounding Bob’s Game, Serena Altschul on PCP, McRib virginity, and more! Runtime – 2:16:42 Link (Giant Bombcast)

Rebel FM — Episode 2 — 01/13/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1109 days ago

The second episode from the former 1UP guys is here and they are sounding a tiny bit better.  With new equipment coming in soon they should sound very good, very soon. It’s good to hear the guys in a better mood with Skip Pfister joining the group. With a little bit of GladOS introducing us it is Relel.fm. AND hear where Shane goes next!!!!!! Note: Wait until morning to download a volume fixed version. “Episode two finds us feelin’ fine, as special guests Shane Bettenhausen (who tells us where the hell he’s headed to work next) and...
