Four episodes in and still going strong. This week the Rebel FM crew are joined by the two main guys behind the newly christened Area 5, Ryan O’Donnell and Matt Chandronait.
The topic of narrative is one that is somewhat polarizing. It’s a topic that has been covered many times and people always seem to have different viewpoints on it. Some of the most notable discussions that I have heard have involved Shawn Elliot, previously of GFW Radio. If you haven’t listened to it you owe it to yourself to go back and listen to the September 1st 2008 edition of 1UP FM for a great discussion with Braid creator Jonathan Blow.
The structure of using cutscenes to tell a story has been a staple in games for a very long time, but recently the technique of delivering story through environment and gameplay has become something developers are aspiring to. A good example of these two styles is Metal Gear Solid 4 verses Bioshock. I enjoy both styles, but do feel a bit more of an impact from the latter. Which do you prefer?
This week we’re joined once again by Area 5’s Ryan O’Donnell and Matt Chandronait to discuss what we’ve all been playing, share our thoughts on narrative in gaming, and explore the heights of sarcasm (in invoice form).
