Joystiq Podcast 083 – Au revoir Ross Miller edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1091 days ago

Due to site issues we weren’t able to get this up earlier today, but the latest episode of the Joystiq Podcast is up! There is mention that the release day is changing to to Monday.  Obviously that is from next week, at the earliest. We get some diverse views on Resident Evil 5 on this one.  I have a bad feeling that this isn’t going to be the success RE4 was in reviews or sales. All the best to Ross Miller.  4 years is a long time to work anywhere in this day and age.  Best of luck on future endeavors. Correction: No release day...

Site issues

There have been some recent database connection problems here on the site.  We are currently working with our provider to figure out what the issue is and get the site reliably back online.  We will update you as problems resolve.

Invisible Walls – Episode 42

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

Eat Lead looks pretty interesting.  The humor seems to be handled pretty well, but I’m scared that it won’t be taken far enough or the parody angle will be used to excuse some mediocrity.  The graphics look pretty sub-par as well. Why is Afro Samurai getting so much attention?  I must admit, I haven’t seen the show and am not aware of it’s popularity, but outside of the game looking somewhat pretty, the action looks pretty derivative. We talk Max Hazard, fight sticks, Afro Samurai, 2009 and explore ironic paradigms. Runtime...

Windows Weekly 92: I’m Jonesin’

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1092 days ago

Windows 7 seems like it’s ready for release.  I’m sure there are many things under the hood that still need to be polished, but the consensus from the beta is that it seems to be in better shape than Vista was when it shipped. Internet Explorer 8 appears to be getting good impressions as well.  What is going on with Microsoft these days?  They are actually producing some quality stuff?  I’m glad to see it. New economics, Gmail goes offline, IE8 RC1, Windows 7 UAC, iTunes Plus, and more. Runtime – 1:20:39 Link (Windows...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 107

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

The idea of extra content for Fallout 3 is pretty exciting in Theory, but it sounds like they are not really going to deliver, epecially at $10 each.  Just give us a full expansion. Does anyone really want to play Fable II on PC?  It seems like a TV and couch game to me.  Remove a controller from the equation and I just don’t see the point.  Thankfully you can use a 360 controller on the PC, but still, not ideal to me. NPDs are discussed in depth here with what the lack of digital download numbers means for true understanding about what...

Listen UP – 01/30/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

The rebirth of 1UP Yours has happened and the new show is called Listen UP.  I’m not sure I love the title, but I didn’t love 1UP Yours at first either.  This is still very much the 1UP Yours we’ve come to love, so that’s a good thing.  No logo yet though it seems. Quite a bit of Killzone 2 talk up front here.  The guys seem to like it, but not quite as much as the IGN guys did.  I predict B+ from the 1UP crew.  We’ll see on Monday when they are released from embargo to post their review. They have mixed it up...

CO-OP 0001: Reflection Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

The second part of the first episode of CO-OP is up!  The amount of work that has gone into this is pretty amazing.  It’s hard to imagine how things are just going to get better from here as they get the resources and equipment they need. If you played many games this year you can rest assured that a few of those are going to be mentioned here.  Left 4 Dead seems to be the game that everyone loves. If you want this show to go on then I suggest you go and Digg the story at the link below or if you are so inclined leave them a donation on...

Engadget Podcast 131 – 01.30.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1092 days ago

The guys are talking the issues that have risen between Apple and Palm as it applies to patents.  The special thing about the Engadget podcast in particular is that Nilay Patel holds a law degree so the insights here are a bit more in depth and on the mark (probably) than most other podcast discussions. The introduction of the second generation Kindle is quickly approaching.  If they get the industrial design right on this iteration I have a feeling that we could see the Kindle becoming the iPod of the electronic reader world. I hadn’t heard...

Tekzilla | Episode 73

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1093 days ago

The Eye-Fi explorer looks like it works really well.  I have seen these before but was always sceptical.  Patrick and Vernoica are talking about these wifi enables SD cards this week and the verdict is that they work. My iPhone  always seems to last the day before needing to be charged so I am not in the market for a battery pack.  I like my phone sleek and slim so no cover for me either, but if you don’t mind a little extra bulk in exchange for more battery life there are some good choices covered in this episode. Embedded, light-weight...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 77

by Jonathan Downin in Games1093 days ago

Leipzig is the latest trade show to bight the dust.  Things are really changing when it comes to these types of shows.  I guess they are just proving to be too expensive for what the companies get out of them, especially in this economic climate. Killzone 2 is getting some pretty stellar reviews with a 9.4 from IGN.  Almost all scores have been above 8.5, with most of those being above 9.0.  Seems like the Playstation 3 has it’s first hit of the year and it’s biggest hit yet? Chris, Greg, Jeff, Ryan and Sam generally preoccupy themselves...

gdgt weekly 023 – 01.29.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1093 days ago

The guys are talking about the almost imminent announcement of the second generation Kindle at Amazon’s February 9th press conference.  The design really is the thing that has kept me from picking up the first one. Oh, Microsft’s poor Zune, things are not going well.  With over $100m decline in revenue last year in the Zune department and the iPod still be the quintessential choice for portable media devices, the outlook for it isn’t too bright.  This is sad since the Zune is actually pretty good and marketplace competition...

Diggnation | Episode 187 – Home Sweet Home in San Francisco

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1094 days ago

Back to Kevin’s couch. More Twitter talk right up front on this one.  Some good advice here for people looking to grow their following. If you like tea, you should listen to Kevin when he gives tea advice.  I bought some that he recommended a while ago and it is great. Really looking forward to Gdrive as well.  Online back-up sounds great.  Just don’t let my stuff out Google. A cozy, tea-filled homecoming to Kevin’s apartment in San Francisco, featuring strategies for increasing Twitter followers, and an invention that saves...

The Geekbox: Episode 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games1094 days ago

The second episode of The Geekbox has landed.  I have to say, the title is extremely accurate– minus the box part, add an s and subtract a Greg Ford. I don’t quite know why, but the stories of Andrew’s not-so-romantic life are my favorite part of The Geekbox so far.  Sometimes funny, sometimes cringe-inducing, always entertaining. I’m glad to hear some more talk about Mirror’s Edge.  That game is really something unique and I would hate to see there not be a second entry in the series. Wherein we discuss the mean...

Rebel FM — Episode 4 — 01/28/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1095 days ago

Four episodes in and still going strong.  This week the Rebel FM crew are joined by the two main guys behind the newly christened Area 5, Ryan O’Donnell and Matt Chandronait. The topic of narrative is one that is somewhat polarizing.  It’s a topic that has been covered many times and people always seem to have different viewpoints on it.  Some of the most notable discussions that I have heard have involved Shawn Elliot, previously of GFW Radio.  If you haven’t listened to it you owe it to yourself to go back and listen to the...

MacBreak Weekly 125: 25 Years And Still Going Strong

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1095 days ago

Although the announcement of iLife ’09 at Macworld was somewhat underwhelming, the first impressions all around seem pretty positive.  The new iMovie and iPhoto have apparently seen the biggest improvements. The idea of putting OS X on a netbook is very appealing.  I’m very tempted to get an MSI Wind and put it on there.  Of course it wouldn’t do any heavy lifting, but that is what my Macbook Pro is for anyway. Cheers to Apple on 25 years and best wishes to Steve Jobs. iLife ’09, Steve’s health, iPhone 2.2.1 firmware...
