Microsoft had a very rough time last year and this year wasn’t too much better. But with a first look at Windows 7 released to “the public” this year, things seems to have shifted a little bit more in their direction.
Ryan is pretty anti-microsoft here, as always, and Peter seems just a little bit more in the middle. I am personally pretty excited to see what Windows 7 has to offer, but as most, what I really want to see is a complete overhaul of what Windows is.
It’s been a momentous year for Microsoft, and not just because Bill retired to heal the world. On this roundtable — our last show of the year — we’ll be talking with our guest experts about the state of the company in 2008. Specifically: the early peek we all got of Windows 7, the future of the brand in a new marketing war of attrition, and how its consumer products fared amidst increased competition from all comers. Of course, if you’re not into anything Microsoft, this may not be the episode for you (although we did record an Apple roundtable a few weeks ago), but if you’re anything like us, you might also think Microsoft’s 2008 was one of their most interesting years to date.

Why would you say I seem anti-Microsoft? I praised them on their successes and I think I was pretty fair about their shortcomings this year.
I didn’t mean to imply that your comments were unfair in any way. Maybe “anti-microsoft” was a little too emphatic and poorly worded. Thanks for taking time to stop by the site and great work on gdgt weekly, can’t wait for the launch of gdgt.
I have to agree with Ryan. Microsoft’s warts get glossed over far too much and too much credence is given to their hype which rarely matches their output (ie Longhorn became “Shorthorn” now known as Vista.
For millions Windows is not easy to come to terms with and this bodes ill for Microsoft’s future.
Aptly put Avro. The thing is, I’m inclined to agree. OS X is highly superior to any incarnation of Windows variant available and this is affirmed by Apple’s considerable upturn in Mac sales.
Anything Microsoft is doing with Window’s 7 seems to be nothing more than a tourniquet for the problem. Tightening and polishing Vista is a necessary measure, but nowhere near a solution.
